  1. Hope you find "ourhappyplace" soon, I certainly understand everyone's frustration, but don't you think the cruiselines might just might be hoping they can get back do the original itinerary or close to it?

Hence the last minute not sure yet! It's been an unprecedented hurricane season.

No one is happy about it cruise lines, passengers, and you can throw in employees ( I'm sure they are getting you ruined MY cruise on a daily basis).

I don’t expect a definitive answer (though that would be nice).....I expect COMMUNICATION....something....anything. A grunt, a howl, swearing....anything. Hello, NCL...are you alive in there?

  2. So, pi$$ed off (3 1/2 weeks after being told we’d find out in two weeks) I called NCL since some on the Gem have received updates. And nasty phone woman basically said, well your cruise isn’t till Feb (a whole 113 days away!) so you might not hear until the end of the year. And threw in....’well, they’re probably waiting to see how the islands recover’. So, we get to sit in limbo through Christmas to see where NCL wishes to ship us? Maybe nowhere? I would rather go to St Lucia and St Kitts than islands with no power. What is going on here?

  3. I am on the Gem 3/2/18 and aside from the email three weeks ago about an update (and none coming) I have heard nothing. I guess some Gem passengers got an email yesterday or the day before asking for another week, but I haven't heard anything. So does that mean they are planning status quo for islands for cruises in the new year? Are we still waiting?

    Communications would be nice...anything.

  4. We leave on the Gem but not til Feb 24th. Was told today by Irvin, personal cruise consultant, that he got word directly from VP stating our itinerary is intact and that the islands would be ready for us. Those being San Juan, Tortola, St. Thomas and St. Marten. There would not be any revised ports. While I realize Feb is a ways away and many things may be able to be repaired in that time frame, just not sure now is the time to visit there. Wondering why cruises after our date are already revised. Wondering if this is just another. bit of lip service.

I spoke to mine last week and he said they get told nothing...that I would know before he did about changes...

  5. Yeah....I get it...hurricanes...yeah, ok. BUT it’s not like an asteroid fell from the sky. The islands were hit by hurricanes, in a hurricane area, during hurricane season. So, why no contingency plans? Why no communications plan? You say you’re going to update people in two weeks, then a week after your own self imposed due date passes...you say nothing? If I was sailing in 3 weeks, I’d be livid. It’s not a logistical nightmare, or if it is, who’s fault is that? FEMA is dealing with a logistical nightmare...the Red Cross is dealing with a logistical nightmare. NCL needs to park boats.

This is what the military refers to as a gong show.

  6. I didn't sign up for the itinerary I will be sailing in a couple of weeks. I am trying to make the best of it, but I know this won't be my only vacation this year so it's a little easier to swallow.

Stay strong and carry on through this dark hour! Visiting those horrible islands in the southern caribbean in the winter is awful!

Now, if only the cruise line had emailed you a warning that itineraries were changing three weeks ago, you could have made an informed decision!

    If only....

  7. Compared to the original itinerary, this is a downgrade. From 8 ports to 5 with the best ports cancelled. Also updating itinerary 2 days after final payment wasn't the best move either.

Sorry, did you not hear of the TWO category 4 hurricanes that wiped half of the eastern Caribbean off the map a month ago? Perhaps you'd be happier with Cozumel and Port Canaveral?

  8. Just received the following itinerary change for January 5th sailing on Brekaway...almost 3 additional sea days...not happy at all!

That sounds like a pretty awesome itinerary...

You can give me your ticket.

  9. It is POSSIBLE but not likely (as that means the embarkation/disembarkation ports now have to be changed too, and that's a whole more complex issue.)

I reached up the food chain and the short answer is, as I suspected, they have not been able to secure ports for the Gem yet, given her departure point the number of options is limited without a ton of sea days to get there and back and all available berths have been grabbed by other ships in the easy ports like Bermuda. Even Canada/New england is all booked.

I am not sure what they are going to do, because THEY are not sure...

My Guess only - I think there is a decent chance of either a CTN with a technical stop, or a cancellation....

Edited to Add - someone asked why some ships further out were able to secure ports. Some lines have retainers on certain ports in case of diversions, etc so as soon as the disruption occurs those ports lock to the new ships and are not available for anyone else.

CTN for 10 days? No thanks. I wish that if they are going to cancel it, just cancel it and let people book something else then. I will definitely cancel before final payment if that is even a possibility.

Dragging it out for this long is not doing anyone any favours.

  10. Obviously you book it for reasons other than the thing that your contract says can (and does) change....with or without prior notice.

You do realize that contracts simply offer legal guidance in the event of a dispute? They are NOT the Ten Commandments of sea travel.

I suspect if buddy here lawyer's up, contacts his congressman/woman, and uses the media to his advantage, that 'contract' will be suddenly and happily altered.

  11. I would think that the Gem sailing from NY rather than Tampa/Miami/Ft Lauderdale makes it a bit of a different case. I would suspect that 80 - 90% of the passengers come from NY, NJ, Penn, even Quebec/Ontario and are, at most, an 8 hr drive away. This means that many won't have flights or hotels booked and will have less invested in cancelling. I think that they switch to a western itinerary they will have mass cancellations. So, NCL needs to get people to eastern islands somewhere (not sure if they can make Grenada, Barbados on a 10 day) or cancel altogether. We'll see I guess....I am on the 3/2/18 and am getting a bad vibe now. My guess is that you'll be really happy or it will be cancelled. If they're going to cancel I wish they'd hurry up and do it because this is making rebooking something else more difficult.

  12. Get off your high horse. Deal with it and it has everything to do with the people on the islands. Maybe you could be more considerate of the situation. Many people are affected by this and he changing of ports. NCL has the right to change

Ports with no notice at all and at least they are trying to communicate as much as possible.

They have a right to change and we have the right to cancel....if they ever tell us.

  13. Would you rather go to an island you really were not planning on sailing to or go to the one you wanted so badly and get off the ship to nothing what so ever except crumbled houses.

Can't speak for most people, but I would rather go to Tortola or St Thomas operating at 50% than Cozumel or Port Canaveral at 100%. I am on the Gem out of NY (for now) 2/2/18 but I think NCL are in a bind since I would think most travellers are within a short drive of the pier, so they can cancel quickly without loss of flight/hotel cancellation fees. Several of these Eastern ports claim they can be up and running by November...so...it is not really the port itself that's an issue, it's the money printing 'excursion' game that is an issue. If they say western Caribbean or Florida/Bahamas, I am out...Antigua's available, St Kitts, probably St Thomas and likely Tortola by the new year. We're not interested in 4x4ing or zip lining...I am happy with a tender in and a beach.
