  1. and what about the cost of your air that you paid for a terrible experience! Now you have to pay it again to go back so you can use your vouchers. Also think the $170. that you paid up front for excursions that never happened and had to spend in their tiny 2 shelf gift shop was a big rip off. Does this tell people: never to book excursions before hand? Not impressed with the way Viking is handling this and have been on 4 Viking cruises but maybe time to try another line.

  2. I agree; unsubscribe if you don't want to continue reading this thread!

Sincere thanks for many of your postings who have more knowledge than I .

I was leaning towards human error as well; until I read about past history of Freya wheelhouse.

Thoughts and prayers with the families of the deceased and Viking crew and staff.

Is there a thread that is better to subscribe to , re. compensation passengers have or will receive?

  3. Full agree with all the other comments; feel so sorry that you had to experience these two river disasters. Not what you had planned and saved to experience. Blessed no one else was injured or killed and sorry also for Viking but they have to increase the compensation otherwise I would think not only the 200 + people that were on this cruise will choose another line plus think how many others they will tell. A major problem happened on one of our ocean cruises (severe flooding of many balcony cabins) and they paid for all our damages and reimbursed us for the difference of having to move to an inside cabin plus gave us 50 % off on next cruise; but must be used within a year and that was off the original price; not sale price that one can always find. I was with large group and no one used it and have avoided that line every since. What they offered you certainly was NOT enough. Thanks for sharing your experience and please continue to do. Again; I'm so sorry; your vacation was ruined plus very stressful.

  4. I know the Captain can't always be at the helm but is there not a co-pilot to take his place? Were these guys who I am so saddened that they lost their lives; trained to operate the river cruise ship? Did the Captain go under the first bridge. Was he off duty when this happened?

What was the position of these two guys who lost their lives and were driving at the time?

The crew members who died was a 49-year-old who was guiding the vessel in place of the captain and a 33-year-old sailor.

  5. Thanks Aleeoc for giving us first hand knowledge of what a terrible night it was for all the cruisers ; not to mention the tragedy of losing two staff members. I can well imagine the all the crew working so hard to accommodate the guests; I found when I have cruised with them three times; they go beyond the call of duty to please everyone. Do hope you enjoy the two days on Bresla and look forward to a good refund so you can come back to a relaxing top notch cruise with them.

    On another subject to anyone:

Do you think it will ever be public knowledge whether it was mechanical failure or human error? Do ships black box operate like airline ones? where you can hear all conversation before the crash? Terrible tragedy whatever the cause.
