  1. Hi.  We will be doing a TA from NYC to Dover in June of 2020.  After that we will be going to Edinburgh and staying for a week.  I am trying to understand the rail system.  I see we can get the train at Dover Priory Station and end at Waverly in Edinburgh with changing trains and stations in London (St Pancras switching to Kings Cross Station).   I see first class seats include meals and beverages and there is food (buffet?) available on the train.  Does anyone know how much the food/drink is and if it is worth the difference in seating to pay for First Class?  I know I cannot buy tickets until about 3 months out so that will be the last thing I arrange for this trip.  This is the "trip of a lifetime" to celebrate our 50th anniversary so trying to get all my ducks in a row as early as I can.  Thanks in advance for any help!

  2. We will be in Edinburgh in June 2020 after a transatlantic from NY to Dover.  We have rented a small apartment through VRBO that is right on the Royal Mile and walking distance to everything.  Much cheaper than a hotel and can cook some meals. Just an idea for the OP.

MDR  Beef dishes were the best.  The salmon is good. Other fishes were not as good.  Order 1/2 portions is available.

Not on menu are baked potato, fresh fruit, cookies, and  calamari . Fresh fruit at all venues was excellent. Love the cheesecake and apple pie.

If you want something and it isn't on the menu, ask waiter.

Good to know 1/2 portions are available.  Thanks!

OMG!  I just discovered that we can get off at Dover on the 19th and get on Queen Mary 2 in Southampton on the 21st! 8 day crossing to NYC.   Always trying to find a way not to fly home... for once QM2 IS GOING THE RIGHT DIRECTION!  Packing for this will be interesting.  EM

Booked the Legend the second day it was for sale and just booked the QMII for the return trip.  I told hubby if I had to fly across the ocean it would be in business class...8 day cruise is cheaper,  lasts longer and I won't be a nervous wreck!!  Celebrating our 50th anniversary and we leave NY on my birthday...going to be interesting!!!

I have looked at this information so many times my head is spinning and I cannot think straight.  Is the date listed (i.e Grand 5/22 for Connoisseur RB8) the date the cruise starts from Whittier/Anchorage or the date of land portion starting?   I have changed my mind 100 times already on which cruisetour we want to do in 2020  🙂

    TIA

To the left of the thread title there is a blue dot or a star. Click on it and it will take you the first unread post.

That works for the main boards but there is nothing to take you to first unread post on content you are following (used to be called subscribed threads).

  7. Thanks for the detailed review. Been trying to figure out which cruise to take for our 50th anniversary in 2020 and this solved that dilemma for me! Hubby was stationed on Kodiak, AK with the US Navy when we got married and we lived there for almost a year. Been on two Alaska cruises and had talked about a cruisetour but this review and caribill's made up my mind. What better way to celebrate 50 years than where it all started! We are thinking about going several days (a week??) early and taking the ferry to Kodiak and back then starting the land tour portion. My TA is probably going to have grey hair before I get all the details nailed down on this...LOL

  8. In the first post there is a link to a google doc spreadsheet, shown below. At the bottom of the spreadsheet are different "pages" with information. The first is how to use the spreadsheet to search, etc. The last one is Princess Cabin Compilation where you can search the different columns for specific information. Hope this helps.

The responses from the reviews will be copied to a spreadsheet located at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing. You will be able to filter the data to view it many different ways.

  9. Durangokid and Tucker in Texas; you all have a great time; but I guess since you have been cruising together for quite a long time; that you all have fun all the time. And I thought I had a big group with my family of 12

Yes, we do have fun! I would love to cruise with my whole family but I don't think it will happen. Our oldest son and DIL are joining us on this cruise so that makes it even more special for me. Enjoy your cruise on CB - we will try to leave her in good shape! ;p

  10. Will look forward to your review. Durangokid, did you say 60 were in your party?

Yes, 60. We are a group who met on the internet in 1997 and have a terrific TA who puts together a few group cruises each year. We have had as few as 8 and as many as 435 on different cruises over the years. :-)

  11. I'm wondering how they handle those Ulu (sp?) knives that people buy in Alaska?? Do they let you carry them back on board from the port?

We mailed ours to our home address. My BIL had a very nice knife he bought on an Alaska cruise confiscated - he was not happy about it but nothing you can do when knives are not allowed.

I would do as others suggested and mail it home.

  12. For those of you that have done the lei making class, how often is it offered? I'm sure it's quite popular, how soon should I plan to get there to get a seat?

Are you talking about the live flower lei? They offer it on the way back from Hawaii and I think there were two days with two classes each day. I could be wrong and don't have my Patters any more. It was fun to do. They put in the Patter what time they hand out numbers and then the class is later in the day. On our cruise (November 2017) they had daily craft classes with crochet leis and the leis made with kukui (sp?) nuts.

    Enjoy!
