  1. This is from a news-letter from the New York Times:

    The view from New Zealand

Countries across the Asia-Pacific region — including Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Bangladesh — are scrambling to slow the spread of the Delta variant. Many governments are reimposing restrictions. For societies that had just begun to reopen, it’s a jarring reminder that the pandemic is far from over.

For insight into the situation in Australia and New Zealand, we turned to Natasha Frost, who writes the Europe Edition of the Morning Briefing.

Natasha: When I returned from New York to my home country of New Zealand in October, it was like slipping through a portal into another world — one where people casually brushed past strangers while waiting in line, routinely went without a mask and even shared plates of fries.

A few months later, Auckland went into lockdown because of what would eventually total 15 Covid cases. In most of the world, so few cases would have been cause for celebration. In New Zealand, it was a sign that something had gone drastically wrong.

It’s a similar story in Australia, where a recent outbreak of over 200 cases has led to about half the country being placed under heavy restrictions. (In the U.S., new cases routinely exceed 10,000 a day.)

Having decided almost from the outset to pursue an elimination strategy, Australia and New Zealand have undergone a radically different experience of the pandemic from the rest of the world. As well as having shorter lockdowns and fewer restrictions, we’ve been insulated from much grief and suffering.

Still, it hasn’t always been easy. Closing borders has cut many people off from their families, decimated our tourist industries and prevented some citizens from returning home from overseas. But few would choose the alternative. Our total deaths from the coronavirus are in the dozens.

The latest chapter of the pandemic, where many people in European and North American countries are vaccinated and societies are steadily opening up, is different for us yet again. Our inoculation campaigns have been sluggish. Our borders remain firmly shut even to our citizens. And though we have far fewer cases than in most of the rest of the world, lockdowns remain an active tool.

Our approach post-pandemic is also likely to be different. Some countries like Singapore are already planning to handle Covid-19 as a new endemic disease, to be managed rather than eradicated. But having invested so much in a zero-Covid strategy, Australia and New Zealand seem likely to continue their hard line, even after most people have been vaccinated.

“Now that we have really effective vaccines and public health measures,” said Michael Baker, an epidemiologist at New Zealand’s University of Otago, “we will aim for no transmission in our community.”

  2. I think you will need to call them. My confirmation does not allow any changes without losing the deposit. Might depend not only on country of website but also on trip booked. I assume only they will be able to answer your question and give you instructions. An 800 call so just going to be a waste of your time but you will know for sure.

  3. I am an early riser, so the shows are not so much of interest for me, I mainly travel for sightseeing and can't wait. And I enjoy the Italian cuisine and not to have to cook and wash dishes 🙂 🙂 🙂 Don't get me wrong I do like cooking but coming up with new menu's all the time and catering to "no gluten, no carbs" gets tiring. Hopefully lot's of lectures are things I am interested in and maybe I am lucky and find some rummy cub players for sea days.

    Enjoy your 122 days Cruise.

I wish I could convince my spouse to come on such a long Cruise.

Even 29 nights was a big problem to convince my spouse, but I managed ultimately.

It was such an amazing price--

only $2258 + €580 service charges for 2 adults in Ocean view for 29 nights, that we had to go

Just mention 4 month no cooking, now washing dishes.....and a selection of dishes and deserts she wouldn't usually cook.  I told my Adult Children already that I am not sure whether I will be ready to cook again after I return.

  5. Wiggster, I am very concerned about all my travel plans for 2022 also. I am booked on the Costa World Cruise Jan. 8th, 2022. Carnival, Aida and P & O have already cancelled their upcoming World Cruises. When is Costa going to release us from our misery and let us know whether it will happen or not. Have booked summer-cruises for my family for 2022, not on Costa since they are still not showing any cruises for summer 2022. All our plans for 2020 and 2021 have already been cancelled and I am not getting any younger 😞 Hard to believe also how many people here in the Caribbean do refuse to get vaccinated so all cruises in the Caribbean might end up cancelled also.

  6. I would like to know also. Right now you will need to upload test results to a portal for traveling, through or to your country. Anybody is aware of whether they do since it is very difficult to reach them by phone or e-mail.

  7. Giving up. After Cunard cancelled their World Cruise and Aida cancelled their October 2021 World Cruise I am throwing in the towel for my booking for January 2022. Not cancelling since I don't have any refundable deposit but just wait and see and not pursuing any further planning. Actually now already concerned about my booked 2023 World Cruise. Hating to be stuck home and my home is where other people come and vacation but just need to find another hobby LOL. Never expected previously to have to cancel my 2021 summer plans, but such is life.

  8. just checked it again, nothing changed yet. Wonder when they will take people fully vaccinated in consideration. As I previously said, the list is so wrong to begin with, the BVI has had little infections and has been very safe but we are on the list of people not allowed to board.

  9. it probably also depends on for what date you are booking. Their US-site is allowing bookings for US-Citizens and Citizens of the Caribbean. The restrictions of the country you are boarding at will probably be the deciding factor when it comes to your cruise. Seems like the countries permitted change on a daily/weekly basis.

I followed the link and basically this insurance covers only UK residents and certain European residents.

I went through that process also, first 7000 L wasn't enough coverage for a world cruise anyhow and my residence also did not qualify. My residence is giving me problems right now also with Visa's. I had been accustomed to Costa getting all Visa's for me. I had been with Costa in China and Russia without any problems, both trips directly booked off their website. Now Costa recommends a Visa-service and they do not handle Visa's for me (German and UK-Citizen) and my friend (US-Citizen) because we are both residing in the British Virgin Islands. Had to cancel an Oceania cruise previously because I would have had to go to Trinidad to get an Indian Visa, estimated cost $ 1500 for flight and hotel. So had not been worth it. Now I am booked 2022 and 2023 world cruises which both stop in Indian Ports, which I had thought would work with iVisa now. IVisa can only be applied for 120 days prior arrival which time I will be on my trip already, so how am I going to board without the required Visas. Contacted Costa customer services but have not received any response.

  11. did you check whether that includes the taxes or port-fees. because on top of the base price you always have these additional charges they will add immediately but don't include in the advertised base-rate.

Think of how many other cruises you can do for that $12-15,000.  It's not being a cheapo, but travel smart.  In our case, our car and truck are both 15 years old and in beautiful condition.  My Harley is 13 years old and also looks brand new, but I've ridden it all over the US.  My point?  Think of all the money we've saved in the past decade and a half by not feeling the need to get a new car or bike every three years.  We would rather cruise.

And besides, you never see a U Haul truck following a hearse.  May as well spend it on something we enjoy.

I am also booking inside. One reason is that traveling solo my cruise is already costing me 75 % of what the cruise is costing for 2 persons. I have been in an ocean-view cabin, but when are you actually going to look out, only when you get into any port or leaving a port and for that I can go on deck. I have done 31 days around South America and had no problem being in an inside cabin. I rather spend that money on excursions to really see the world. I do live right on the ocean with a beautiful view of surrounding islands, so am used to a good view and can manage without it even for 4 month. I do travel a lot with my Adult-Children and we prefer to each have an inside cabin, then sharing (my daughter and me have to much clothes anyhow). When it comes to flights included it all depends again how far you are flying. I do have quite a distance from the Virgin Islands to Venice but do that on airline-points, there business and as it looks now return premium economy since I will need more points for additional cruises in summer 2022 for my daughter and me. Thankfully my son buys his own air. And then I need to safe up points for air for my 2023 cruise. I don't drink much so the wine with lunch and dinner Costa includes is all I would do anyhow. On other cruises I would just buy a bottle and that would last me 2 dinners. Excursions is one thing I will not be cheap on. I do watch cruise passengers here just getting off the ship and walking around Road Town, believe me there is nothing to see in Road Town, but there are so many beautiful places to visit on excursions in the BVI.   I have been on Costa on a Baltic cruise and in Russia the 2 days were 1 day St. Petersburg and 1 day Moscow at $ 500 per person which for what was offered seemed very reasonable to me. Alone watching the long lines to get into the Hermitage and we walked almost straight in. Concerning luggage forwarding, I have priced it already and one suitcase from Venice to the BVI will be about $ 300,00 so doable. So it really depends on what your preferences are. Enjoy your cruise, I am sure you will have a great time.

  13. Heidi having been a (small) boat owner for a relatively short time I learned fast how much cheaper it is just to charter or in this case book a cruise. But I am limited financially so not in the same bracket. I used to have a very wealthy friend who kept a yacht in the Med. He was a golfer and not a sailor so didn't really use it a lot. So one time he decides to use it in Marbella and brings along a few friends and it breaks down, he was not very happy even money wasn't really an object, it was the change of plans forced onto him he did not appreciate.  I was pregnant during the time we owned our 2 boats, a small motor-boat and a 16 foot racing sail-boat, so didn't really go out. I think every trip on these boats must have ended up costing me about $ 2000 - even small boats cost a fortune on insurance. Lesson learned. I also live right on the ocean, Atlantic-side with surf in winter, so very familiar with maintenance expenses when you are exposed to sea-air. But nevertheless would love to cruise on My World or the new one, just not in my budget.

  14. Costa is 150 % of double for single-occupancy, good for me. They are also using double-cabins for single-use so I will have space for a 128days trip. I also like Costa's food and atmosphere. I have been on Princess, HAL, P&O and many smaller not mass-market ships so can compare.

  15. Check out Costa also, they do leave from Europe so you will need to consider airfare. Their single rates are reasonable not the double rate and the cabins are double used for single occupancy, so not as small as designated single-cabins, something you will want to consider for 120 days or longer. I am booked on a world cruise with them 2022 and 2023 and if 2022 should not happen will definitely book 2024. Costa's world cruise includes a drink-plan and 15 excursions. I booked 2023 as soon as it came on the market hearing that world cruises are selling out fast now, Oceania 2023 was sold out in one day.

I am with all of you.  We have 11 months to go and one would think the cruise is tomorrow. Also thinking purses, cocktail dresses, wraps for the eve,  other eve clothes. Especially wondering how one wears the same dressy clothes over and over on a 90 night cruise. Love all your posts and suggestions!

Accessories,  fancy costume-jeweler, nice blouses you wear like a jacket over your dress, the blouses you can again wear as a blouse during the day.  I live in a hot climate and am usually cold all the time, so I get plenty of light and heavier jackets 🙂 Felt bad for planning to have 2 suit-cases and the carry-on, you all make me feel so much better!

Oceania  may be more $$  but they include the VISAs & many extras

Do the math  for the whole trip

I had checked on Oceania since it includes so many extra's but then noticed how small the ship is and how many passengers. Had been one time in the Med on a smaller ship and promised myself to never do that again. There was an area by the pool with only a few tables in the shade where you could have lunch and these tables were occupied by a group all day. They made sure to have one person sitting there at all times to hold the tables. Good thing it was only 1 week drove me crazy already, 120 days would have just sent my Blood pressure off the chart.

  18. Goodtime Cruizin, I am not going to argue with you, my contract reads:

"Costa reserves the right to reinstate the fuel supplement for all Guests up to $9 per person / per day, should the price of the light sweet crude oil according tothe NYMESX (New York Mercantile Exchange Index) increase above $70 per barrel"

so for 128 days that will be up to $ 1152.00, so I will be able to live with it. Just hadn't worked it out previously.

Not sure whether Princess has any clause similar to that one. I have not been to good reading the small-print in the past, but right now what else do I have to do then wait for my next cruise.
