  1. While Pride of America commenced construction in a US yard, when the initial company went bust, it was taken over by NCL and the hull towed to Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven for completion.

Learn something every day! Didn't know about POA being finished in Germany, US made a special exemption to allow it to be US flagged. On your previous post I was quoting the Passenger Act as to regarding a direct NYC to Miami. The distant port rule is why every west coast cruise to Hawaii stops at Ensanada on the out bound leg.

  2. Thanks for the information. I guess I just never thought about the fact that cruises, even repo cruises, have a at least a couple ports of call. Always thought the cruise lines did it to sell the cruise not because it would be illegal otherwise.

The only ship that can cruise US port to US port is the NCL Pride of America. It was built in 2006 in Mississippi and is flagged in Honolulu. This is the first US passenger ship built and flagged in the US in 50 years. It only services the Hawaiian Islands.

  3. You can bring 2 bottles of wine for $15 apiece corkage. That's really your best deal. The gifts section of your MyNcl has wine starting at $48 a bottle. If you want liquor you can call the main number and order a bar set up. Ex: 1 liter of Grey Goose, 3 mixers, 3 garnishes = $130. Not as much for non premium brands, but still outrageous.

  4. Good Day,

I know of no cruises that leave from the NY area and end in Miami. There are some open ended cruises that end in Montreal or England. I am not sure why Paul state that what you were asking was illegal. Cruising to Canada or England may give you better options to fly home. Not sure about that since I have never priced flights to Australia. I will try and attach some schedules for you to see. I would suggest a site that lists all the cruises. there is one I use but we cannot mention it here. You can email if you like and I will give it to you. I think the files attached....You have two cruise ports in NY, one in NJ, Boston and Baltimore to choice from.

    Good luck with your planning

The illegality is that no foreign built and flagged ship can transport passengers embarking at one US port and disembarking at another US port without stopping at a a non US port. ( The Passenger Vessel Services Act, (PVSA), 46 U.S.C. § 55103 (b)) The reference was made to a direct cruise between NYC and Miami.

  5. I agree with this, the rep is incorrect. The spa pass is a room amenity, not a perk. Similar to when you win a Haven upgrade. You get all the amenities of the Haven.

I'm inclined to agree, the rep was wrong. I went through a lot of threads and NCL rules and conditions and the spa goes with the room. Thank you one and all!! I just might use it because I can!!

  6. I'm the OP and I just wanted to make known a fact I just found out. I won the bid and was assigned a spa cabin but I do not get the complimentary Thermal Spa Suite pass. I had to call NCL about another issue with my new docs and I asked about that, and the rep I spoke to took it all the way to her supervisor. I keep all my perks that I had on the balcony, but I do not get any perks associated with the upgrade cabin. The Thermal Spa Suite pass is a perk of the spa mini, so no go!

  7. Thank you for the info JamieLogical. The irony is that I may not even use the spa. I'm a 72 year old, 6'3", 260 lb, retired Teamster, not exactly a spa candidate. Unless, does the spa have craft beer on tap and TV's playing football on Sunday's?

My hubby was a forklift driver - he NEVER goes to a spa at home but loves the thermal suite, try it once, since it's free for you on this cruise - think swimming pool hot tub, instead of froo froo spa, you will find lots of people similar age and shape to you

I'm in shape, round is a shape!

  8. Ha ha ha! I am not the spa type either. I think if I had access to the spa, I would go there in my full clothes maybe just to get away from the crowds/noise if it was a particularly crowded cruise? Is anyone sharing your cabin with you? If so, maybe he/she will get some use out of their pass?

No, I'm doing a solo so I guess the pass will go to the souvenir pile.

  9. Congrats! I hope you enjoy your new room and you definitely lucked out with the Spa passes!

  10. Congrats OP!

Question, I just put in a bid today (80 days out). If you bid on a mini suite, is that seperate from a spa mini? What's the difference exactly? Can I just get awarded a spa suite? Do all boats have them? I'll be on the Gem. I didn't even know about them and I love anything spa related so this got my interest!

I bid on just a mini and got the spa!

  11. Yesterday morning I posted a question, E Docs, having to do with my getting them 70 days out and did it affect my upgrade bid. I got some good feedback and learned it had nothing to do with my bid. Now this morning, (69 out), I check my email and there is one from NCL informing me that my bid is accepted and I went from a standard balcony on 12, aft, to a spa mini suite mid ship on 14. My bid was the lowest into the 'fair' range and I still got it $600 below list. Every thing I've read on CC about bidding upgrades tells me this isn't normal. (A) this far out from sailing. (B) first cruise in 13 years. © first timer at NCL. (D) and I'm a solo. Nevertheless, I am happy with the result, but did I just step into the proverbial poop! Isn't this just a bit unusual?

  12. Just printed my E Docs, 70 days out for NYC Breakaway. Since I got the docs and luggage tags already does this sort of kick my upgrade bid out the window? I am only on my 2nd cruise in 13 years and I really have no clue. Thanks for any help!

  13. Taken from Wikipedia: In 2017, Norwegian Caribbean Lines built new food and drink areas, rebuilt cabanas, and expanded the beach areas. Norwegian Caribbean Lines plans to build 38 private villas with up to two bedrooms each, a two-story restaurant, a swim-up bar, and a spa area.[10]

  14. Thank you keywest1 but I don't want to start all over again. Keeping in mind when you quote $442 out of pocket, for me that translates to $884 being a solo. Not taking the economics into the question I ask again would bidding on this mini make sense for a larger bathroom basically, and how long from acceptance do you get a new cabin number. It wouldn't be like 'sail away' would it, where you get your cabin when you show up at the pier?

  15. 80 days from sailing on the Breakaway out of NYC and just got a bid notice. Offer starts at owners suite for top of $3000, down through Haven categories @$2000 to a mini suite topping @ $400. Right now I have a starboard aft family balcony on 12 and I'm a solo cruiser so all the stated prices are times 2. I'm looking at the mini because I'm a big guy and the larger bathroom and shower appeal to me also the probability of a mid ship location would be a smoother ride. I'm considering a bid of $200 (times 2 =$400 out of pocket). Do you folks think it could be a good deal and also if it was accepted how long before NCL tells me the new stateroom number? Last cruise I took was 13 years ago and the last boat I was on was a ferry so I bow to the assembled wisdom of the CR boards. Thank you.

  16. A few hundred yards south of Manhattan Cruise Terminal at pier 83 is Circle Line Cruise with a variety of different cruises about the harbor. The best of which is the trip around the whole of Manhattan, but be aware, that ride takes 2 and a half hours. Google Circle Line, NYC and you can get a full listing including prices. Good thing is as a rule you don't need reservations, just walk up. Enjoy!

  17. To answer the original question, when you search a solo price it will still come back as 'per person'. The solo being the single person. You can check this by running another test booking and entering 2 people, the difference between the 2 bookings is your solo supplement.

  18. OK, this will probably elicit a 'doh' and forehead slap from some veteran cruisers, but my one and only cruise was over 13 years ago. I have seen some posts for other cruise lines that said life vests were no longer required for the muster drill, but I haven't seen anything directly pertaining to Norwegian ships. I don't even know if it's maritime rule or port rule and I will be sailing the Breakaway mid October from NYC. Any info I get will be appreciated as I will add to my list of tips that grows everyday.
