    At Sea Indian Ocean
    Amsterdam destination Singapore eta 7/5
Maasdam destination Suez Canal eta 7/17
Veendam destination Suez Canal eta 7/17

Thank you very much for the post, and I'm sorry to hear about the illness.

Does anyone have knowledge about why Maasdam and Veendam are heading toward the Suez Canal (other than just getting to the Mediterranean...)?

  2. Agree, chisoxfan. And also, I don't believe that Holland, the cruise lines, and the US Gov't have created and approved a plan for when or where the ship would dock and passengers allowed to disembark should there be an instance of Covid-19 found aboard, and how they'd be allowed to travel home.  At this time most of the US and many other federal governments around the world can't even find agreement on letting healthy cruise ship and merchant crews return home after the end of their contracts.

  3. Your question about Oct 4 to Hawaii being a lost cause is a matter of opinion, IMO. If it were me, despite how much I'd want to go on that cruise, I assess a number of problems: the current trend in the virus cases, hospitalizations and deaths in the US and Mexico, the extension of the federal government's pause in cruising from US ports, the Dept of State's "Do Not Travel" warning, Hawaii's 14-day quarantine requirement (which I think is likely to continue to be extended), and the lack of a solid policy agreement between the cruise lines and federal government for assessing cruise ships and individuals safety of travel and return.  If it were me, I wouldn't make final payment for that cruise.

I’ve been wondering if that’s the real reason HAL’s  fleet just happens to be outside US waters.

Another reason to keep the fleet in these various locations is to make it easier to pick up their crews before cruising begins. That way the could transport the crews via ship to the first turnaround port for passenger travel and not have to fly the crews overseas.  I think organizing the re-assembly of a ships multinational crew will be a very big undertaking for all of the cruise lines.

  5. Roger that. And, I can foresee that cruising may begin while excluding passengers from the US and a number of other countries with poor Covid-fighting results.  I think the cruise lines' solvency only dictates which cruise lines we sail on in the future. To me the important thing is which countries show success or failure in defeating this pandemic. At this point, the US is not one showing success.

One problem, by definition cruises, except for river cruises, and the NCL ship in Hawaii, take place outside of america.

Agree. Also, the Trump administration excluded the cruise lines from other "federal assistance" this spring because they're not really US companies, or staffed primarily by US employees. Why would he start giving them perks now?  And if Covid is just the flu and has been reduced to ashes, [from the US government's official point of view,] why would these companies need assistance.

I'm wondering if the reason why we haven't gotten this (Caribbean B2B on N. Statendam Nov/Dec '20) is because they don't expect to be cruising by then.  It's looking more and more that cruising won't begin much before next year what with the most recent rash of cancellations.

I agree. On May 6th HAL took a big swath out of their cruise calendar through the end of this year. Now, in early June, they took another bite out of the calendar by cancelling everything remaining that touched Canadian waters in 2020.  Sadly, I think the next shoe to drop will be in early July when I predict they will cancel the ANZ 2020 cruise calendar based on ANZ's proposal for a localized travel bubble.

To me the question isn't whether HAL will be ready to cruise in Q4 2020 or in 2021. My question is whether the destination governments will allow any international cruising by then, or whether they'll allow passengers from certain other countries who've had extremely high Covid-19 frequencies.

We have five HAL cruises booked in 2021, but have no money down beyond the minimal FCDs.  I wouldn't take the early payment/OBC deal...

Perhaps a peak at this might help you - https://public.flourish.studio/visualisation/2562261/

Very interesting chart, and nice graphics. Thank you for posting it.  Just to be fair, I don't see causes such as cancer, heart failure, or accidents (other than drowning) or natural causes represented. The numbers shown are noted to represent only about 7% of the worldwide deaths. This chart shows Covid-19 rising up through the lower ranks of causes of death.

BTW, has anyone heard an update to the cruise line meetings with the CDC, the original purpose for this post?

They might know something more about Hawaii’s limitations and complications to arrive there by cruise ship than we do 😉

That may be true, but there are a number of other 2020 Hawaii cruises on the Koningsdam and other HAL ships that have not been cancelled...yet. It could be that they have other plans for the Koningsdam during the January/February 2021 timeframe.

  10. Another bank of elevators on the Koningsdam would be great. On that class of ship they added capacity for an additional 500 guests, or so, beyond the Eurodam and no additional elevators. Therefore much longer waits for the 'vators. That said, in the post-Covid world the cruise ships might be running with much lower passenger counts and this problem might be resolved. So, Ashford's original lack of foresight on the elevators may turn into a demonstration of great vision!

  11. I have sent mine in up to a year in advance with no problems, however, for one cruise I tried to send it more than a year in advance and it was rejected.  The bigger problem that I tend to have is that every time I buy the CCL stock for onboard credit purposes, the stock tanks. Then when I eventually sell (at the inevitable loss), the stock rises...  😞
