For anyone from class of 22/23 WC who may still be monitoring, or any others who have familiarity with Sydney - those of us on the 23/24 WC are considering an alternative to the Sydney pub crawl offered by Viking, since it sold out. And a few of us thought we might have more fun just winging it on our own.

@Heidi13 @Jim Avery @NY Nick Maybe any or all of the 3 of you have some experience to lend here.  We already have some thoughts about a good itinerary but would love to hear further thoughts - thanks on behalf of the Sky Pub Crawling Club (haha I just named it that)

We took a Pub Crawl tour when on a Viking River cruise going thru Cologne Germany.  It's wasn't a "HEY - LET'S PARTY" type of tour.  We had a fun group of a dozen or so, hit 3 or 4 pubs and had one drink in each.  The guide told stories and gave history of the city as we walked.  It was alright.  Glad we did it but wouldn't do it again.  As you've said above, you probably WILL have more fun on your own just winging it.  FoW is probably a must stop in, other than that, I'd say research pubs if you're really interested in pubs and hit the ones that tickle YOUR fancy.

We did venture out on our own in Sydney and took a water taxi over to the Taronga Zoo.  A pretty neat set up.  Take the ski lift to the top, then tour the zoo as you walk downhill all day long.

You think the laundry room will be more noisy than the rooms that open directly to the forward or aft elevator lobby?

We were a few cabins down from the LR and never noticed anything.  I can't imagine the elevator area being that noisy.  Possibly only when the dinner bell rings, or the show lets out.  And even then, can't imagine it being more than 6-7 minutes worth of traffic.  I wouldn't put too much weight on it.

Question for all you who booked port side staterooms:

If you had it to do over would you pick one on the starboard side instead?

Mike and I are 99% ready to book the Jan 24 WC on Sky and at the moment can have a select a DV on either side.  Typically we would pick starboard on a cruise heading west as we prefer a shady balcony to a sunny one and have found generally the room stays cooler on the side of the ship that doesn't face south or west during the heat of the day.

Our conundrum is that the starboard side rooms still available tend to be located immediately adjacent to the elevator lobbies so we worry about the potential for noise.

TIA for your thoughts as to how problematic the heat and sun on the port side (likely to be deck 4 or 5 midship-ish) was for y'all.

Wondering if those of you who are currently on the WC will continue to monitor this forum after you return?  As those of us who are starting to gear up for 23/24 WC have so many questions, and though many have been answered via the 22/23 roll call,

I may not monitor but can always be reached at djnick913@aol.com.  You're right, the 22/23 roll call answered MANY questions.  An EXCELLENT reference.  But also a chore to search.

Jim - another benefit is going on a World Cruise for 4-months as a pax, is not having to get up at Midnight or 04:00 every day to go to work.😁

Mind you, I do miss the hopped beverages with breakfast, after working the 4-8. When I met Judi on SS Oriana, she just couldn't understand enjoying a few beers at 08:00.

In my Navy days worked 0000-0800 for many many moons.  One of the first days off in Gaeta, Italy (homeported there, USS Puget Sound), I hit shore after work to the closest bar at around 0930.  Thought I'd be there alone and just hang for awhile.  Found out the place was packed with us night owls.  Got to know many other sailors on the same sort of shift.  Next thing you know, we saw the day workers wandering in (looked at watch, reading around 1630-ish).  Time to head on back to get some shut eye as the "day drinkers" came out.  In other words... "SHIFT CHANGE".  See you guys tomorrow morning.

  6. And todays 15 seconds of fame goes to…

Back here in the US, every Sunday morning there is the Willie Giest show. A Sunday morning show with news of the week. One segment they do every week towards the end is show pictures of people with their coffee mug from places near and far. This morning they showed a couple that was… “Going under the Centennial bridge in Panama on a World Cruise.”  They didn’t name the cruise line and I missed the names. Do they look familiar?

Thanks Andy. we saw that as well, just don't want to get caught in the voucher cycle. (been there, done that) If the stars align we will try again,. For now we will go home, regroup and probably head south. We have many friends who winter in AZ. I followed @NY Nick and we may try to replicate some of the areas he and his wife explored.

Linda and I have criss crossed the country by car a half dozen times always taking a different route. Give us your starting and ending point and I’m sure we can toss a few ideas your way. Here or at djnick913@aol.com

Random question of the day: is there liquid hand soap in the cabins?  I was organizing some of our travel supplies and thought of it.  We prefer liquid to bar but most ships we've sailed have bar soaps in the staterooms for hand washing.

We wanted a antibacterial soap so we brought our own. But just about 10 days later, 1/4 is already gone. Your milage may vary.

  9. Finally hit the spa pool today.  800+ people on this boat and this place was nearly empty, for starters anyway. A hot pool with its own water jets, a hot tub, a sauna, a “snow grotto” and self heating lounge chairs once you laid down on them. Tough to make the snow grotto out, but there are two benches in there and snow piles in every corner.  Hot cold - hot cold - hot cold.  It’s one great way to get your body’s blood going and a full body invigoration.

  10. Next piece of swag we received a few days ago. We both received a box of  business cards (500). As you can see with our name and stateroom. They’re for sharing with new friends on board so you can keep in touch. I think it would have been great if they put our full name and addresses on them. Then with the Viking logo and web site on the back they REALLY would have gotten some milage and advertisement out of everyone on board, especially once you used them back home. But we’re sure privacy concerns ruled the day here. Any way, once again, thanks Viking.

  11. When we first arrived in our room, we found our first little piece of swag from Viking on our bed. It’s an 18” x 12” magnetic map with a magnetic push pin to mark our current location. It obviously found its way up on the wall right away. If you zoom in you can see it marks our future track and stops across the planet. Cool stuff. It’ll feel right at home once we GET HOME and pair it up with a few other maps we have documenting our travels. Thanks Viking.

As per my previous post, the cruise has started exceptionally well, but based on our previous WC experience with another Line, this is an area we are watching closely and while day 1 was otherwise exceptional, for this area on day 1, Viking gets a failing grade.

Will be watching with interest and would be interested in hearing some feedback from those who are completing the entire 245-days.

Good morning Andy.  Here’s my .02 worth. From arriving, to this morning, we find everything exceptional.  You have to remember, this cruise is just not for us. As far as just showing the LA/Sydney segment in the Viking Daily, well, that’s what’s next. No need for sensory overload for the next 119 days.  Can you imagine trying to select all your tours, dinner reservations, flights, hotels and transportation for this cruise all in one day.?.  Let’s sum it up in two words... Vacation baby,
