Definitely let Carnival know you are bringing a wheelchair.    https://www.carnival.com/about-carnival/special-needs.aspx

Ask Carnival about any suitable accessible shore excursions.   They sometimes have accessible tours that are not listed with the regular tours.   There is one in Roatan that I think looks like fun:

And in Cozumel these are listed:  https://www.carnival.com/shore-excursions/cozumel##page=1|wheelChair=Wheelchair Accessible|

If you want to take a private tour, you can contact some of the private tour operators at your port stops to see if they can accommodate a wheelchair.

Thank you for your comment and time, but I find it irrelevant since I wasn't asking about that and as you probably know, I have already done all that and even more. BTW.. the link for Cozumel is NOT for accessible cruises. Those are NOT accessible... I do hope that others can benefit from your info. 🙂 If you do have any personal experience with what I posted, please do feel free to share the experience. 🙂

We have not been to Costa Maya but have  been to Roatan and Cozumel. We used Victor Bodden in Roatan. I use a collapsible scooter and described this to Mr. Bodden. He then assigned us (just the two of us) to a van with a driver named Janet I think. I do not remember the cost. We toured all over the island and saw monkeys and sloths. It was a wonderful day and greatly enjoyed this tour. In Cozumel we went to Chankanab (?sp) which was very nice. At the pier we just got in line for a taxi and told the person doing the assignments that I needed a vehicle large enough for my scooter. There is a fee to enter the park. You can do all sorts of activities including, beaches, nature walks, swim with dolphins, seal demonstrations etc. We had a lovely day there as well.

    Thank you so much...

I have contacted Mr Bodden and been thinking of using him. It is good to hear you had such a great experience.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Cruising is a great option for people with mobility problems 🙂

You might do well to post your questions on the 'port of call' boards too as you will get some replies from people who know the places you will visit (I'm a Brit so cannot help personally). The advice might not be tailored to wheelchair access but should give you somewhere to start.

Thank you. I have thought about that but thought I would start here since it seems more appropriate and could get answers from more experienced people in my situation. :)

  4. I make a list of the days I will be traveling and then check the forecast for those days. Then I do one pair of pants for every so many days (usually end up with one pair), a pair of shorts one for every so many days (usually two pairs) and a dress or two. Shirts - one for each day I wear shorts or pants. One light jacket. A pair of underwear for every night and socks for the days I think I will wear shoes that need them (so one pair of shoes) and a pair of sandals. I keep it super light.  I mix and match clothes too to keep the number of items down. And a pair of pajamas sometimes two. Two to three bras. I also remember that there is a good chance I will do one load of laundry on trip (like our last 10 day trip I did just because I could and it was nice to take mostly clean clothes home). However, some trips I know I will do at least one load of laundry so I only bring enough for half the amount of days we will be on trip. I don't pack a swimsuit but if I did, it would be two. This all fits in a small roller bag that I was able to either carryon or check.

  5. You can't go wrong with any of the itineraries out of Galveston for what you are wanting. I highly recommend taking some time to research each port to see what there is to do and what interests you or doesn't and make your choices off of that. Then see which itineraries will best meet your interest. I just got done doing this for our December cruise in 2019. Doesn't take long to do and lots of great info. I did read through posts on this board as well to get others opinions, but most info came from researching each destination. Fun and very informative making my decisions easy! Good luck and ENJOY!

  6. We always bring original containers. I always get an original container from our pharmacy for each medication a week before we leave and fill each one with the number of days of our trip plus one extra week. We have been on vacation before and ended up in the hospital and the doctors needed original bottles to be able to continue giving you the medications while under there care. We also have a note from doctor that is dated within a week prior of trip that lists medical conditions and medications with doctor signature and date. That comes in handy at a hospital as well as it prevents a lot of issues arising that can. I would rather be over prepared than under. I do this for every road, flying, cruise trip no matter where we are going. Anything can happen and if you only have a medicine pill box with pills in it that will do you no good for verifying your medication and dosages you take to any doctor or pharmacy if you need a temporary fill because the pills you brought fell down the sink or something. Etc... This is just me and our experiences

  7. Hi,

We are going on our first Carnival cruise (second cruise ever) and after reading through some threads and doing some research online, I see that it's definitely doable to do some tours. That excites me as my daughter is in a wheelchair full time and its been hard trying to find excursions that we can do. Of course, it is much easier to use a wheelchair accessible vehicle, but I can take her out of her chair and put her on the seat in a vehicle if need be and her chair does come apart in two pieces. So with that said, we are looking into doing a private driver tour in Roatan, Costa Maya, and Cozumel.

Anyone done anything like this that can share their experiences with us?

Costa Maya: haven't looked into it yet, but hoping to do Chacchoben Ruins, Mahahual Fishing Village and maybe a stroll along the boardwalk at the beach that I heard about....

Recommendations on tour / private driver company and any other sites/experiences, etc?

    Roatan:

Victor Bodden, Rony Tours, Roatan Cab Tours are the ones I can find so far. Anyone use them?

Sites: Monkey/Sloth place and hope to make a few stops along the scenic road to take a couple of quick pics. Not sure what else to do there in Roatan?

    Cozumel:

Thinking of going to a beach. My daughter who is disabled and in wheelchair doesn't last very long lounging around but loves to take strolls and shopping. So I was thinking of a short time in the morning at the beach (usually when she is still tired) to enjoy some downtime and then walk around to shop and what not.

Any good beach to go to that has a path to where lounges are and not too crowded? Hammocks anywhere? Daughter loves to lay in hammock but it needs to be on beach? I heard of YoYo beach and Paradise Beach - thoughts on either one of those?

Was thinking of going to El Cedral Village. Anyone done that?

    Anything else?

    Sorry for the long post..

Any info is greatly appreciated. Thank you all so much!

We were not able to find accessible transportation to Tulum. We found accessible taxis for a reasonable price at thisiscozumel.com. and booked it for 5 or 6 hours. The driver was great and friendly, he didn't speak the best English but we all understood him. We went to the San Gervasio ruins, as mentioned in a post above, that are on the island. They aren't as grand as Tulum but much easier to get to and we had a great time and I would recommend this as an alternative. Pushing the manual wheelchair took some work on some of the paths but it was worth it seeing my son have such a good time. The rest of the time we went to the east side of the island for sightseeing and lunch.

Thank you so much. Will look into that. Sounds wonderful! So glad your son had a great time.. I am the same way.. Hope you can enjoy many more wonderful times with him...

Tulum is offered through the Carnival website as an excursion for our cruise. My hope was that the busses used to transport people to Tulum would be wheelchair accessible, just not the tour. If we could get Jason there in his chair we would just sight see from the grounds. Jason's chair is a fixed chair and he is unable to sit up without it so we are unable to transfer safely to a seat. The private accessible tours I've found are a bit out of our budget, but it sounds like the taxi or shuttle systems might be better than I thought. We might just have to explore whatever is around the ports.

    Thank you for your reply.

Did you ever figure this one out as I am in same situation with my daughter and would be interested in doing the same thing but am having a difficult time trying to find out if there is w/c accessible transportation to / from Tulum? Thank you.

  10. Hi,

I took my daughter who is wheelchair bound on her first cruise via Disney. We are wanting to go on a second cruise and have been looking at a Western Caribbean cruise out of Galveston, TX for December 2019. We are looking at Carnival Freedom. Thoughts? We would be able to get a fully accessible cabin (unless its taken by the time I book). She is very sensitive to smoke fumes so I will have to be careful with keeping her away from that. All the ports on this itinerary are docking no tenders.

Would love to hear others experiences with Carnival Freedom. Also, if you have any recommendations for wheelchair transportation or excursions at any of these ports, I would love to hear about them: Cozumel, Costa Maya, Mahogany Bay.

    Thank you all so much!
