    I did rail travel around the Highlands many years ago. Would love to spend more time there, too.


    We missed Shetland, too, on a 2019 TA. After that experience, and after reading about others on CC who missed Shetland or Orkney (or both), we decided not to rely on Viking and the cruise gods coming through for us. So we booked our own multi-day trip. This way we’ll have plenty of time on the islands and won’t feel rushed.

    We did the Ancient Shetlands this morning with Jim Young as our guide.  He did a great job.

     

    It is an hour plus drive to the Jarlshof in the southern tip of the island including a quick photo stop and a slightly longer bathroom stop.

     

    Jarlshof is an important dig, mostly because there has been no reconstruction of buildings here. The site was buried under sand and just needed to be uncovered. Jim started with the oldest dwelling on the site and then moved us forward through history as moved through the property.

     

    This tour is a one trick pony. One stop only

     No food. No shopping. If you aren't interested in ancient ruins and ancient civilizations, this tour is not for you.

     

    Accessibility: Not for wheelchair access. Poles and walkers doable if you stick to the gravel path.  Steps can be avoided except at the entrance to the property.

    We'll be there on our own next month! Spending three days on Shetland and five on Orkney, plus a couple of weeks touring around the Highlands.

    Sorry you had a foggy day! Did you enjoy the gardens themselves? We will be driving through that area next month and plan to stop by the IG.

    Your comment reminds me of a Viking cruise we took in 2019 that happened to be the first leg of a world cruise. A person wrote on CC that folks like us had a different “agenda” than people who were going all the way through.

     

    I take issue with this opinion, not only due to the pejorative word “agenda,” but also because it’s difficult if not impossible to generalize among passengers based solely on cruise length. In our case, for example, we love the lectures on board even though we’re often just “two-week vacationers.” 
     

    IMO, it’s not helpful to drive an artificial wedge between passengers. We’re all enjoying the wonderful cruise experience that Viking provides. Why not leave it at that?

    Kent, I’d never heard of Explora before reading @Jim Avery’s comment and yours. So I did what any self-respecting senior would do — I consulted my dear friend, Dr. Google. The good Doctor directed me to Europa’s oh-so-luxe website and flowery language. I hope the company’s product is better than the marketing hype!  🤣

    We’re in Sorrento right now, enjoying the view from our hotel terrace overlooking the Gulf of Naples and the big city in the distance. Pompeii was crowded on Wednesday — our second visit to the site — but evocative as always.

    No worries — you didn’t step on my toes! And even if you had done so, those toes are pretty tough. I’ve developed a pretty thick skin after 42 years in the legal field.   😀

    Attorney here. It’s very possible that lawyers won’t be working on this for “years to come.” They need plaintiffs, after all, and many real or potential cases may already have settled out. And other passengers may just wish to put the Sky debacle behind them, five years after it occurred. (There’s also the issue of potential statutes of limitation, but that’s beyond the scope of this comment.)

     

    As to the ascertainment of legal responsibility, courts do this all the time in multi-party litigation. It’s not a problem.

    Back in 2019, we sailed on a Viking cruise that was the second segment of a world cruise. This didn’t bother us at all. But apparently the presence of “segmenters” did bother some who were going all the way through. One person even suggested on CC that folks like us might have an “agenda” that would disrupt the rhythm and atmosphere on the ship. Who knew?   😀😀
