  1. We will dock in Barcelona on our next cruise. Royal is charging just under $100 (after a discount for Black Friday) for a hop on hop off bus, which seems a little extra pricey to us. Does the hop on hop off bus that I can purchase tickets from online stop close enough to the cruise port?  I know in some cities they are not allowed to come close to the cruise port and you have to walk a ways for the first stop. We’re not afraid of a walk, but want to maximize our time in the city as we have lots that we want to see.

Check the Daily Planner in the App for your sailing. Ours lists quite a number of Halloween activities for Oct. 31st., including Halloween themed trivia, costume parade and Monster Mash Bash. Tonight's attire is "Halloween Costume".

What boat are you on? I’m on the Jewel and nothing is listed in our planner yet.

it takes the same amount of time to put on pants vs putting on shorts idk why people hate the idea of wearing pants to dinner.. just cover up simple... i dont wear ties or suits at dinner.. i wear a polo pants and shoes simple and easy and COVERED up. whats the issue???

Um, my post never suggested I was going to wear shorts.  Did you even read the entire post?  I wasn’t asking about having to “cover up”. I think you’re confused on what the original question was. And no one said anything about the time it took to change either.

I think someone doesn't know the meaning of the word"representative". That picture is a narrow sampling presented to further your particular view.  Representative is defined as typical or group.  That is not typical.  That is the lowest standard possible.

OP: You will see a sampling of all kinds of dress on formal nights.  Please be courteous and at least try to be neat.

I never suggested that we wouldn’t be neat. We don’t wear ripped or cut up pants. I wouldn’t dream of going to eat anywhere aside from the poolside cafe in my bathing suit. We’re not even bringing bathing suits. Like I said, we will be wearing sporty type long sleeved shirts and technical khaki style pants with tennis shoes. I, personally, wouldn’t call that disrespectful. And I would think the mere fact that I’m asking ahead of time so that I can pack accordingly, being courteous.

Bottom line. The "dress code" are suggested dress. You are on vacation and should dress how you feel comfortable. There is zero reason to go to the buffet based on what you're wearing. Never.

Shorts are seen in the dining rooms on all nights (including "formal night").

Here's a representative sample of attire on Formal Night on the Wonder of the Seas. Short and Polo Shirts are fine for DH... long sleeve shirts are over dressed.

Thank you!  That makes me feel much better!

yes and those lounges for shows.  I mean a medium weight jacket over top of something else with long sleeves.  More ships have a/c on for the crew to stay comfortable and the passengers can just add layers.   oh well

Thanks, we will be sure to pack some extra layers. It’s summer and I’m still wearing a light jacket now 😂

best advice on dress code is the wear long sleeves as they keep the a/c high.  I almost froze my butt off on Liberty OTS and in the end had to only go to buffet.   Head waiter kept calling me a lot to come back but I told him NOPE.

Thanks for the heads up. My husband and I are always freezing, so I will bring an extra layer!

  8. New cruisers here……I’ve read that the dress codes on some cruise lines aren’t very strict. What is it like on Royal (the Jewel specifically)?  My husband wants to pack into a carry-on only (one for each of us) and we will be dressing in long sleeve sporty shirts and technical pants with tennis shoes for most of the days of our trip. Are those inappropriate for the dining room?  How fancy is the formal night?

My husband has to keep his food mostly salt-free. We don’t want to have to eat in the buffet most of the time, because they can’t accommodate him there and we can’t eat salt-free when in port for lunches. We need to figure out just how much dressier stuff we will need to take so we can fit it all in.

I hope the passport office fixes the issue promptly and properly.  Getting the passport is the real issue.  Doing electronic check in is optional.  We have booked cruises within 3 days of departure (on line check in had already closed), so we obviously hot not checked in. Though it may take a few extra minutes at port, it works out just fine.

Thanks, I hope so too! They said they would rush it and gave her a number to call if it isn’t back by a certain date.

Starting from where? If it's out of country did she have proper id to get there?

Just trying to better understand and figure out what would be the best solution for you.

It’s starting in Canada and ends in US. We spoke to Royal and they linked our accounts so she will be able to pick the same check in time as us and then we just have to wait for the government to get her passport back to her.

Here’s what I suggest (assuming this is a US citizen going on closed loop US cruise):

    1. On the app, select an arrival time.  One can do this without doing any of the other check in steps.

    2. Order another official copy of her both certificate now (just in case). If the passport comes correct and back in a timely fashion, she will have an extra copy tucked away.  If the passport is delayed or is, heaven forbid, still messed up, she will be very glad to have BC and photo ID.

    3.  If the passport still has not come about 5 days before the cruise, just check in as BC and photo ID so you have the set sail pass.  (Or perhaps you don’t need photo ID if daughter is young)

Unfortunately it’s not starting in the US. But thanks for the suggestion.

Don't bother calling - just fix the issue at the terminal on sailing day (this assumes the name itself on the reservation and ID match).

But you have to have a pic of your passport in order to check-in on the app. She doesn’t have her passport because she had to send it back to the passport offices to have it fixed. Doesn’t she have to check in prior to being at the terminal?

  13. We’re first time cruisers, so this is our first time checking in to a cruise. Our daughter found an error on her passport (they put her down as the wrong gender) and it’s off for a rush fix with the government. We had no idea you would need pics of your passport to do the check in on the Royal app. Obviously, she’s not going to be able to do that for awhile. We’re planning on calling Royal in a few hours, but wondered if anyone has been through this before and what it will mean if she can’t check in for several weeks?

Public transport: the Silver Line (a bus) leaves from Dockyard Ave and will take you to South Station. From there you can walk up Atlantic Ave to the North End or you can transfer to the Red Line (inbound). Get off at Park Street and you will be a Boston Common (note it’s common singular not commons plural). You can see The Embrace which is the new statute in honor of Dr and Mrs King.  This is also where the Freedom Trail begins.
Uber: when you get off the ship you will be facing a large white building. Walk around the building to DryDock Ave. look for large signs with either 23 or 25. At these points DryDock Ave is two way so your driver can pick you up, make a U-turn, and avoid the chaos at the port.
You can walk but I don’t find the walk in the seaport district very interesting except if you want to stop at the Harpoon Brewery.
What ever you do enjoy Boston!

    Thanks for the tips!!

Would second this-- its a tedious walk through an area that is mostly newer development/construction (especially for someone who is there just a day) and lacking the charm of the historical city core.

An Uber/Lyft will be your fastest option here to get right to the middle of Boston's main sites.

Another tip is if you are planning on doing most of the Freedom Trail I would recommend taking a short Uber or walking one way to the Charlestown Navy Yard where the USS Constitution is. From there take the MBTA Ferry from Charlestown Navy Yard to Long Wharf downtown (or you could do that in reverse). This will save you time (vs backtracking your walk as the map will have you do) and you get a little harbor tour on the ferry.

Thanks!  I’ll look into that route!

Haven't been to Boston yet -but I've researched it heavily as we are spending 5 days pre-cruise. Google maps says its a 40 minute WALK to the Boston Commons visitor centre - 25 min by public transit.  I can't see a shuttle bus competing with the public transport on that time frame. Or just walk out and grab an uber.

I was going by what my husband had looked up.  I imagine it was because of the time of day that he checked. Apple tells you the time it will take at that moment (unless you choose a timeframe). I checked just a second ago and it says the transit system will take 35 min. So, it’s not much faster than walking. I’d just rather spend the time (and energy) walking around the areas that I want to see. We will do an uber if it’s the best option.

  17. I’ve seen an article recently about transfer buses from the port to the are of the freedom trail in Boston that run around $20 pp.  I can’t find a date on the article, so I don’t know if that’s still a viable option, or will we need to Uber?  I don’t want to take the 45 min transfer with public transport each way as that will eat up time in port.
