Hi everyone! I just found this site and I am in heaven! I love all the packing tips. I am doing an Alaskan Land and Sea in late August. My DH and I are avid cruisers(haven't figured out how to post them all to our profile:confused:) so packing has always been an issue. We have been to Alaska in May of 2011, weather was good but rainy and chilly. Does anyone have suggestions on what late August into the second week of September would need for packing? We do the cruise first and then the land second. Again, thanks and hello everyone:)
We did the same time frame last year and my biggest tip is to bring lots of layers and waterproof gloves. The weather was all over the place...30 degrees and snowing in Denali, drizzle on most days, sleet one day, foggy on several days, and sunny in Ketchikan. The only thing that I didn't pack was my waterproof ski gloves, and by Day 4 I was regretting that decision. The cruise portion I found to be much more casual than I am use to seeing in the evenings. I brought two LBD's (little black dresses) and changed them up with accessories.

I always go with a rain jacket and no umbrella. For my DSLR, I cut the corner out of a 2 gallon ziplock bag and slid it over the lense. Then secured it with a rubber band. It kept my camera dry and I could easily look through the view finder.

I decided to challenge myself to pack everything for our 7 day trip to Niagara Falls in a rolling carry-on. We leave tomorrow and I think I have done it. This exercise made me realize that I really do over pack. For our last cruise (13 day trip) I brought 2 full size suit cases, a rolling carry-on, a duffle bag, and a tote bag. That was just for my stuff.
This time I wrote up a clothing plan, stuck to one color scheme, and limited the shoes and accessories. For clothing I am bringing 1 dress, 1 pair of black pants that convert into capris, a black/white striped maxi skirt, 5 tops, 1 cami's, and three scarves. The only extra thing I am packing is an extra t-shirt. It is Niagara Falls and odds are I will need it when we get done with the Maid of the Mist.
When we return I will let y'all know how I felt with limited options...I think I will be ok. :)

Thanks Lois for posting this information. I just went on eBay and PayPal and changed my passwords.

It figures that once I post a link to the Ameribags that I see a clearance sale on the HBB's. Just ordered two small leather healthy back bags in blush and celery. This one more reason why I had to make my guest bedroom into an accessory room.

My favorite every day purses are Big Buddha and Fossil. For travel I love my Ameribag Healthy Back Bag. It has tons of compartments and I love that my DSLR fits nicely inside. http://www.ameribag.com/classic-healthy-back-bag/
I have taken my Ameribag hiking, biking, to Alaska, and soon to Niagara Falls. It keeps everything nice and secure.

Jewelry, makeup, medications, laptop or iPad (if I am live posting), wine, swimsuit, coverup, t-shirt, shorts, a few pairs of undies, camera, iPhone, flip flops, and any other liquids like shampoo. I just bring my valuables and enough clothing if my suitcase gets lost from the port to the ship.

Hmmm... I don't see it in the site. The closest is the classic messenger bag in large.
Thanks! I really like the styles. It's also great that they have so many bags for bicycles...I may have to get a few things for my bike. :D

I went over to their website to check them out, but not sure which one you are referring to. Do you happen to know the style name? Thanks! :)

How exciting! It can quickly become addicting. The biggest challenge is the fitting. There are some terrific fitting books on the market and you might want to look into getting one. Of course, you might be one of the lucky ones that fit well straight out of the envelope. Have fun!!
I wish I could fit the patterns! I am 5'11" and a D-cup, so I will need to learn how to adjust patterns to my measurements. I am looking forward to the adventure and will definitely buy a fitting book. Any recommendations?

Y'all have motivated me to learn to sew more than just drapes and pillows. Friday I am heading over to Joann's to sign up for sewing classes. They are having their 1/2 off sale on classes Friday and Saturday, so I decided to go for it. I have found 3 patterns that I want to make and already purchased them:
Simplicity 1355 - Misses Maxi Dress and Long or Short Jumpsuit with Bodice Variations
Simplicity 1374 - Misses Two Piece Swimsuits and Beach Cover-up (making the cover-up)
Simplicity 1429 - Misses Pull On Knit Skirt in Three Lengths, Pants or Shorts in Two Lengths
The only classes that work with my schedule are in June, so it will be a while before anything is made.

Mousey, let us know which product you go with and how it works for you. I totally get where you are coming from on this. I have horrific spider veins and varicose veins on my legs from being obese for years. While I do agree that most people do not notice them/comment on them, there was one obnoxious woman that made a nasty comment. Her exact words "Wow, did someone kick you in the shin? That is the worst spider vein I ever saw!" My response "Someone is about to kicked in the shin." and I walked off. Some people have no social etiquette.
Since I am pale I tend to use the bronzers to de-emphasize them. While a bronzer will not cover them up, it will make them less noticeable.

i had to return one of the two tops I ordered with the dress. The sequins in the arm opening cut into me making wearing it very painful. I returned it to the store but it took a while. They are taking lots of returns and there is a new process. The clothes no longer get sent back so the woman said that there are different items in the stores now. She also suggested that I not order online unless I am absolutely certain since there are no returns after Wednesday.
We must have bought the same sequin top. I am taking nail scissors to the sequins under the arm to get rid of them and the irritation. I will have to swing by the mall next weekend and see what the store has on sale.

Hi Lisa, great photos:) The last time I was in Alaska was 2009 so by
2015? 6 years in between.......yes, I think I will be going again:D
We we last September and that was the only day the entire trip that it was sunny and clear. I was so happy for great weather. Walt got to sit in the co-pilot seat while I sat all the way in the back to get the awesome pictures. I booked the float plane tour because Walt has his private pilot's license and I thought he would enjoy the experience. We both loved it and would do it again in a heartbeat.

My order arrived today. I ordered a gold sequin dress on a whim with the coupon. I love it! I hope perfect for our New Year's cruise. Can I wear knee length for formal night?
Yes, a lot of women wear cocktail dresses on formal night. I received my order this week too and everything fit great. I bought the black and cream horizontal striped palazzo pants and was shocked at how long they ran. The inseam was listed as 30", but the reviews made me think that it was longer. The actual inseam was 34" and is just above the floor (like a 1/4 inch) when I wear flats. Love them!
And this week got even better when I booked another cruise last night. :D

Oh goodie!!!! My favorite topic...accessories. :D
I really like the white dress and I would accessorize with some pops of color. I think a wide band elastic belt would be great to define a waistline. Add a couple of bright bangle bracelets on one wrist and some dangling or hoop earrings. I usually stick to either big earrings or a big necklace, not both. I like the shoulders and neckline of your dress, so I would skip the necklace. And if you can do a pop of color on the shoes that would be great, but I may be pushing you too far outside your comfort zone.
Color combos that I like for the pop of color are:
royal blue and orange
orange and yellow
magenta and purple
red and black (pop of neutral)

It's official, there are no pictures of night 11's menus. I double checked my files and Walt checked his and apparently we were preoccupied with packing and other stuff. Oops. :)

Welcome back Marie! Your upcoming trip sounds fabulous and y'all will have a wonderful time in Alaska. Alaska was the one cruise where I skipped the gowns and went with cocktail dresses too. I am looking forward to seeing your pictures from both cruises. :)

If anyone is still trolling CC...it is 50% off in the outlet section and there is a coupon for 20% off in addition (NPK3514). It appears that they are not honoring free shipping any more. I just purchased a dress and two tops!!:D
Good for you! I just checked and my order shipped on Monday. I guess my order was one of the last ones with free shipping. The additional 20% off makes the dress I am looking at more tempting.
Quick question, can you return something you buy online at the store? I know that the last day for returns is May 7th, so if I order the dress and it does not fit I would like to return it to the store at the mall. Thanks for the help! :)

Fish6, thank you for the kind words. I think day 11 was the day I forgot to take pictures of the menus. I will double check my computer when I get home.

Over the weekend I ordered 3 more tops, a dress, and a pair of palazzo pants that are supposed to run really long. I am watching the prices on a cute dress that I like that was apparently sized incorrectly (runs really small). Based on the reviews I need to buy a size 14, but I think the price is still too high. I am checking the price daily, but hope that May 7th is the day that they start really slashing the outlet items.
On thing that I find odd is that the gold sequin dress that I bought a month ago is now at a higher price than when I purchased it. I thought the outlet prices tend to go down as time goes by.

Good point! I brought my zip off pants (turn into shorts) and was happy I had them in Ketchikan. Considering Ketchikan is a very rainy town, I find it funny that we both had sunny and warm days there in September. :)
