I'd lean slightly toward Belize. Shark/Ray Alley off Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker is pretty cool. I've seen a greater variety of bigger fish in Belize than Roatan or Cozumel. We saw spotted eagle rays, big grouper, squid and other fish in Belize. The only knock on Belize is, everything there requires a boat where you can easily snorkel from shore at Roatan or Cozumel.

I realize these posts are several years old, but I'm betting "John Gotti Jr" was not wearing a medal he won. I'm betting he was imitating "Flavor Flav" from rap group Public Enemy:
NoobCruise I can assure you it was NOT a medal or some insignia of achievement as was suggested by CC's biggest blue nose know-it-all. It was a crazy piece of bling that the kid seems to have worn everywhere. Was I wrong to make fun of a kid? Yes. Would I do it again? Hell yes!

They are definately different experiences. In general I think cruises are more fun, active, higher energy vacations and AIs are more low key and relaxing. I wouldn't say ones better. They both have their advantages.

If the OP does this as often as it seems, why not buy a top made for snorkeling? They're very lightweight and packable they offer more protection from the sun than a t-shirt. You'll be warmer in the water too. They dry quickly so you can wear it on consecutive days.
As for the shoes, why not bring a comfortable pair and donate the bad shoes to Goodwill?

As far as swimming for exercise, some of the Princess ships (Crown, Caribbean, et al) have a "water treadmill" which shoots a jet stream of water into the pool and you swim against that. I believe they're located in the Lotus Pool which is the forward most pool on board.

I'm loving your uberdetailed review! We're from the Queen City as well and will be sailing on the Valor in March. We've never been on Carnival before so I'm learning a lot from your review!

In Key West you have to take The Conch Train! You'll see everything. After you're done riding it, most everything else you want to see is within walking distance.

We did some geocaching last week on Cozumel. We rented a jeep so we could drive around on our own. We found 2 caches on the east side of the island and one in downtown San Pedro. I posted our finds at Geocaching.com .

I had a heck of a time finding a postoffice or even a place to buy stamps and mail postcards on my recent cruise. I found that the best bet was in the cruise terminal, if the port has one. That worked for me in Aruba and Grenada.
I know in St. Lucia the post office is just about a block off the main drag running through Castries, not far from the market buildings near the port.
I also found that things mailed from the USVI get back to the states fairly quickly. There are post cards I mailed from Aruba and Grenada over 2 weeks ago that still haven't made it!

I wouldn't say that you need to replace the mask. If the skirt around the lens is still pliable and not stiff, it's probably fine. Take it to a pool and see how it performs before you go buy a new one. As someone else said, a new strap might be a good idea. I've got a mask that's over 20 years old and still is in fine shape.

One of our favorite things to do in evening, either before or after dinner, is to go to the photo area and look at the pictures of our fellow passengers. Our pictures are always bad so we never buy one. I have to admit that we do get a kick out of making fun of some of our fellow passengers.
On our last cruise we kept seeing photos of a family that had a 10 year old boy who, in every single picture, wore a giant gold chain with a garish medallion of some sort. If Mr. T had been wearing this piece, it would have looked gigantic on him, but on a 10 year old kid, it was hilarious. We dubbed him, John Gotti Jr.
Every night we'd go down with the main purpose of finding the latest photo of John Gotti Jr. And, as dependable as your Maytag washer, there he'd be, proudly beaming, his hair slicked back and working that gargantuan gold chain.
So on the last night of the cruise, as we were leaving the theater after a show, I saw him. He and his family were probably 30 or 40 feet away, out of earshot. I said to my wife, "There's John Gotti Jr.!". I must have said it loudly enough for those around us to hear because a dozen people all looked at me and said, "where?". I was forced to sheepishly confess that it wasn't the real John Gotti Jr. but actually a young child who we'd been mocking for the entire week.
I'm glad that happened on the last day otherwise I'd have had to endure the scorn of so many of our fellow passengers.

Appropriate clothes for British Isles cruise in August

We've not done a cruise there, but we did travel around much of England in August, from London to the Lake District. I wore long pants and usually a long sleeved shirt and I was never hot. Some warmer days I'd wear a polo style shirt and on chillier days I'd wear a fleece jacket. A shopkeeper in the Cotswolds asked us how were were enjoying the hot weather they were having. It was 72f that day. It's all relative. Hot to the locals would be cold to Floridians.
I would second the opinion of Gore-tex lined shoes. I have a pair by North Face and they're great. We got caught is a downpour once in San Francisco and were soaked.....except for my feet, which were dry as powder. Having dry, not soggy, cold socks goes a long way toward improving your disposition!
