  1. You'll see a little of everything. When we sailed on Celebrity they had "evening chic" instead of formal, which left it open to interpretation. DH would prefer not to take a suit, so his black dress shirt and

Dressy pants made it Into, our luggage on our most recent. I think that will be the way we roll from now on. I usually wear a short formal on one night and black pants and dressy top on the second formal night. As far as McDonald's, we kind of like going there for a casual meal, but if we wanted to wear relaxing at home kind of clothing on a cruise we would go to the buffet.

  2. No offense to some of the older posters here but I have news for you: just like newspapers and magazines, books are on the way out. There's simply no need to have printed material in 2018. Not to mention it's a complete waste of paper.

Boy you really have made a broad assumption about something that has absolutely nothing to do with a person's age. Older than what? My 9 year old granddaughter is an avid reader, way beyond her grade level. When my son told her that eventually there would be no book stores or physical books, she gave him a stern look and said, "I will move to CANADA if I have to". By the way, there are still plenty of magazines and newspapers on the racks, and what are you going to,use the paper for that you need to conserve it and not waste it on literature ?

  3. I rejoined online in May and am down 39.3 . I'm up and down week to week but 1.2 lb from goal. My original desire was to fit into my summer clothes for our cruise next month but I have surpassed that and Im a little worried that everything will be too big. I already need to get smaller pants as Im down to one pair of dress pants and they are hanging down quite a bit. I won't have to take my "fat squisher" for my cocktail dress:D.

I'm not complaining really but may try to do maintaining status to not lose too much more.

  4. We're in our early 60's and except for a few early Carnival cruises have almost exclusively sailed Royal Caribbean. We did sail on a Celebrity ship a few years ago and it was nice, better food, much older demographic. The entertainment was disappointing at best . The loyalty transfer from Royal to Celebrity helps but it wouldn't make me choose Celebrity over any other cruise I wanted to take. Although we are "older" and we don't climb rock walls or use the zip line or surf simulator, we like to watch all the activity.

If you choose a good TA they can help you narrow it down. I'd get as much printed information as you can, narrow it down and then come back to the boards and ask the questions you have then. Happy planning!:D

  5. If you want the Caribbean , then I would suggest Southern Caribbean for destination. If it's a great ship experience then I would suggest Freedom or Oasis class ships although the Voyager class is one of my favorites and I think at least one may go to the Southern C.

Alaska is , well simply wonderful. I think the Explorer is doing 7 nights out of Seattle. It's a great Voyager class ship. If you want more then a cruise tour is (I hear) the way to go, and that is on our bucket list.

We really loved the Anthem out of NJ for New England/ Canada.

Congratulations on 40 years! We're working on 37 this year:).

  6. Grab a box of Zicam nasal swabs. I worked at a medical school with a researcher for the past several years. I'm now at a hospital. There are two credible double-blind studies that Zicam (nasal swabs, NOT the lozenges) reduce symptoms from 9 days to 2.5 if you start using them right away. I always have some on hand now. I will use them 3-4 times per day as soon as I feel that anything is coming on. Never fails me.

    Yes! That stuff is amazing!!!

  7. I really don't think it was meant as a put down. I live in Iowa and know lots of farmers, and a farmer's blow is a term they use. Most would only do it out in the field. I do not think the person that said it was trying to say a farmer would do it in public, or trying to put anybody down except the dote that did it in the windjammer.

Must be a man thing but NOT necessarily just farmers and that is how the person framed the comment. Maybe just Iowa farmers;).

  8. Okay- I just HAVE to address this. I don't believe the person referring to the "farmer's blow" was in any way attempting to degrade or belittle farmers. As a former firefighter, I very quickly learned what a "farmer's blow" was and why it is sometimes necessary. (For anyone who doesn't need the gross description as to where the name came from and why, you'll want to stop reading now.) When you're working your butt off in cold or wind, often your nose will start to run. You don't have time to stop what your doing to pull out a tissue and daintily blow your nose. You also need to be able to breathe. Therefore, you hold one side of your nose shut while quickly and powerfully blowing out the other. Then, you keep working. This does not imply that farmers are somehow unhygienic or any "less than" anyone else. It implies that they work their tails off. I don't expect they would do this anywhere it wasn't absolutely necessary. But, if you would prefer to call it a "firefighter's blow," I sure won't take offense.

Thanks for that information, but I believe the person said a man " farmer" did this, and did not call it a " farmer's blow". As I said before, my farmer husband thinks this is disgusting and my son is also a firefighter. I could see someone fighting a fire doing this, but that is a time critical often life threatening situation. Planting crops and marketing is not. Yes they work hard but those bandannas hang'in out of their back pockets take care of the problem just fine :D. I would hope that even a firefighter wouldn't do such a thing on a cruise ship. I would think it rude to refer to the man as a firefighter when describing the behavior because the person probably doesn't really know what the person's occupation is, right? Just took exception to anyone assuming that someone must be a farmer if he (or she) engages in such uncouth behavior. Stay safe!

  9. We love American people and have visited Florida 30 times.

We are not all trash who call America and the same bigots are reviled by us too.

Sweet of you to say :) I absolutely loved traveling through England and wish I could have seen more. I was so young at the time that I didn't really understand what the problem was, but I'm sure it was something political. Most of my encounters with citizens were wonderful. That summer was one of the best experiences of my life. ( I love Florida too! Wish we were there now, it's so cold here in Illinois :o)

  10. We loved our Alaskan cruise several years ago. We did just the 7 night cruise out of Seattle and sailed on the Rhapsody. We did the White Pass train excursion and I liked that because I had done some reading about the gold rush days. DH thought it was boring. We went whale watching in Juneau but really saw more from our balcony on the ship. The sled dog camp in Skagway was really a highlight. We took an airplane tour of the glaciers which was very interesting. It was good to do once. There is really no way to describe the beauty of Alaska. Our hope is that when we (I) retire in about 4 years to take a cruise tour to see more on land. I'll have time to do a lot of research before then and I'd love to leave right after my final work days in July 2022! If we can't do the cruise tour I would still take another 7 night cruise in a heart beat. Definitely would suggest at least an ocean view balcony stateroom.

  11. Genuinely shocked at that.

We are not all like it....

It was many years ago but I spent a summer in England (East Sussex) working in hospitals. I encountered at least one person who was very anti-American and referred to me as a Yankee Doodle":D I didn't understand it but there was some reference to the value of the currency at the time. It would have been interesting to ask the woman on the elevator " you must have had a bad experience with Americans... What happened? Of course by that time the elevator would have started moving ;p

  12. Got you beat.. standing in buffet line for lunch. Man "farmer" blows his nose onto floor. I almost went spastic! I don't care what happens in the kitchens now. I ALWAYS eat in dining rooms.

How do you know he was a farmer? He did what did because he was inconsiderate or not quite right in the head not because of his occupation:mad: Gee my DH is a farmer and wouldn't dream of doing such a thing.

  13. It sounds like everyone here had a better experience than we did with this excursion... If it was the same vendor. We had a rocky catamaran trip with lunch on the craft which was difficult as the water was rough that day. Arrived at Nevis and had nowhere to sit but on a picnic table.. The few chairs available were rickety lawn chairs, and we just sat baking until they were ready to head back. No tour was given. If we visit St Kitts again we'll stay there and maybe catch a tour.

  14. I've had 3 Mother of the bride/ groom gowns/dresses. I have worn the full length gowns once each on cruises but the most recent one is 5 years old and knee length. I too found it at Nordstoms and had it altered then. I have worn it once or twice each year since. I have truly gotten my $ worth and will continue to wear it until it is too outdated or falls apart! I usually wear that one on the first formal night and then just another dress or skirt that I would wear to church for the second formal night. I wear what I want and don't care what anyone else wears. :D
