  1. Just finished watching this one. Felt very authentic when compared to the Netflix movie, especially when the mother told her daughter to leave her luggage out on the last night. The screenwriter(s) definitely have some cruise knowledge.

The plot wasn't all that exciting, but the ship life was featured way more and Royal Caribbean definitely did more product placement with this movie.

  2. "Public" idea (more on the crazy side):

Do they have the Quest game on 3-day cruises? If so, you can prearrange with the cruise director to request "I need a couple named John and Jane!!!" as one of the scavenger hunt "items".

Theoretically, only you and your partner will be running down onto the stage (what are the odds of another couple having the same names?) And before you know it, you're down on your knee proposing.

  3. RCCL is my favorite cruise line, while Princess is second on my list. I'd consider Princess more low-key with activities as well, but I still had fun with them. Also, RCCL has a competitive advantage with the unique "Promenade" and "Neighborhood" decks.

What demographic are you in? Married couple? Family with young children? Family with older children? Extended family coming along? etc.

Knowing these stats will determine if Princess will work for you.

  4. Favorite Waiter: Constantine (don't know the last name), but from my 1996 Viking Serenade cruise. The fact that after 21 years I still remember his name is a testament to his greatness.

Favorite Cruise Director: Leigh Xuereb (from his time on Independence of the Seas in 2015)

Favorite Cruise Director Staff (Activity Staff): Silvia Pristavkova, currently on Explorer of the Seas. She makes sure each and every passenger has an amazing time with all the activities. And she is even nice enough to hangout post-cruise (if she ever visits a port that is your hometown).

  5. The only Freedom-class ship I've been on is Independence and it's probably my favorite ship (I haven't been on any RCCL class higher than that yet, unfortunately).

But my favorite part is definitely the Royal Promenade.

The only other cruise line I like is Princess, and I've been hesitant to go on one since their ships don't have something similar to the Royal Promenade. Unless I'm mistaken, they only have atriums.

  6. I was on the June 30th cruise and I thought the nightlife was good (I'm 32, so I figure we have the same age range preferences).

Karaoke was always crowded and fun. They have the typical karaoke nights and then one big karaoke “contest” event in Studio B.

“DJ Wells” was all right. Though there was one night in Dizzy’s (Deck 14) that was so packed and crowded, it felt like a real nightclub. I was shocked and impressed, and of course, got my dance on. However, on the last night, nobody was really there, so I guess it’s hit or miss.

The Quest game was about half full of participants, but still fun.

There was lots of stuff to do and I was never bored, thanks to the awesome Cruise Director’s Staff. I don't want to overhype her, but Silvia is the best!

  7. I was on the June 30th sailing and I loved the cruise, as I seemed more relaxed and care-free than on past cruises.

I agree about the window cleaning though. Minor complaint, but I guess I wasn't the only one who noticed.

I thought the Activity crew (Cruise Director's Staff) was the best on any cruise I've been on. Paul and Jon are great game moderators and Silvia is an instant legend at that position. And I wish they would retire the 70s party and do a Totally 80s party instead!

Still missing this cruise every single day!

  8. I just finished an Explorer cruise as well and I agree, this guy is great! Leigh is probably still my favorite (when he was on Indy in 2015), but Graham is just as comparable.

I'm not sure if Graham does this each week, but when we couldn't enter the Tracy Arm Fjord all the way due to the ice, Graham went into the water to retrieve some ice and filmed it.

  9. I usually like to take photos of the empty rooms (lounges, dining rooms, theater) on the first day, when most people are still boarding. Less people traffic in those rooms during that time.

If the doors are still closed for the theater or dining rooms on that first day, I still go in and take pictures. However, if the fire doors are in place, then I wouldn't attempt to enter those areas of course.

I call this the "exploration" stage of my cruise :)

Be aware of high humidity and your camera lenses. Since you're a photographer, I'm sure you already know that.

Keep your camera with you when you board the cruise ship (instead of storing it in your luggage. Though that's risky in itself). You won't get your luggage until much later in the evening.
