  1. Only travel using an 18" wheeled carry-on and a small tote that double as a purse if needed.

[*]Do not travel with a purse . Use a small black tote to carry all meds and anything that needs to be accessed readily.

[*]Bring only 3 pairs of shoes ( one pair worn)

[*]Every piece of clothing can be interchanged with at least 2 other pieces or it doesn't get packed.

[*]Do not bring formal attire. Instead pack a pair of nice black slacks/top that can be dressed up/down using scarfs or jewelry.

[*]Even with packing light there are things I never wear.

This is exactly how we pack for any trip of any length and

whether flying or by car. Even to the size of the bags.

  2. The magnetic strip on Cruise Ship/Hotel type key cards is very susceptible to being erased by close proximity to cell phones and other electronics. This is because it has an exposed magnetic strip that is designed to be easily, and frequently, programmed.

I've never heard about any similar risk with electronics such as phones themselves, iPads, or cameras. All of these are routinely used in close proximity to other electronics and are really designed for this.

I think I remember a warning from Equinox staff that the magnetic cover/case for your iPad might erase your room card under some conditions. Memory dims after a year, and I did not have an iPad at that time...

  3. When booking your hotel room, go to their website and scroll down all

    of their room prices.

You may find that you pay more for a room with cruise parking.

Check this additional cost against the price of a more secure alternative

before deciding where to leave your car.

We have used long term parking at hotels and have been

given a sign to leave on the dash.

The sign stated the dates the car would be there (an invitation to break in)

I have never seen a secure hotel parking lot, and I do have friends whose car was stolen from a hotel lot.

  4. :)

Ugh, I have to admit that is one of my top pet peeves. Especially when they quote the entire text and 6 huge pictures and then just say 'nice review' or 'where did you eat dinner on Tuesday?'. :D

Most people probably don't know if you just right click on the one photo you want to comment on, you can just copy and paste that one into your reply.

    I totally agree.

  5. RVRCLC, this is good news for us.

Is there any problem finding your Part-Go shuttle after getting off the ship?

    Trudy

Not a bit. They told us where to look, but it was right in front of us.

It's well marked. You will, also, have a phone # (just in case, and just so you

don't worry about it). They are SUPER helpful.

P.S. We drove over there the night before, just to make sure of those

side streets and to know exactly where to go. I :( had to cancel our reservation

for January, they were very prompt, and nice about that too. We like it much better than the port shuttle and dragging bags around there.

  6. i always make a copy of my Celebity page with the excursions and any other things I paid fro ahead of time.

You should recieve all your tickets for the ship excursions in your cabin the day you board.

You usually meet in the Theater. Once there you walk down onto the stage and give staff your tickets(for all those you want to be with on the bus).. they will give you a sticker witha number on it for each ticket. they will call the numbers and you proceed with the staff person off the ship. You will find your bus and meet your tour guide.

    have a great excursion.

    Sometimes.

If we have to tender to shore.

When docked, Most of my tours have met on the pier.

  7. Is pier parking at Pt Everglades close to Constellation berth?

    What is the daily costs?

Any tips appreciated. We want to drive, park, and go on to another vacation the easiest way, with minimal transportation and walking factors.

    Thank you in advance.

    Trudy

We drive from a couple of states west of you. We used port parking a few times. In all but one of these times the ship was not near the closest garage and we had to take their shuttle bus. Crowded, not fun.

Then we discovered Park and Go on Eller drive right by the port entrance.

They were less expensive, secure, great service and a shuttle to your ship.

Will never go any other way, now.

We spend the night at the Holiday Inn Express on Hwy 84, arrived the

day before the cruise, and with a combination of local maps, the Garmin,

and exploration, we found a direct route from the motel to Park and Go

    by using back streets.

    (It's a very short distance.)

Park and Go shuttle from the ship was very convenient and they took us right along-side our our car. Very easy, no dragging bags around.

I will never leave my car in any hotel parking lot, not secure enough to suit me.

  8. I know there are many that will think we are crazy, but we are planning to go on our Summit Caribbean cruise with a 21” carry-on each, plus we’ll each have a backpack/large shoulder bag that will fit under the seat in front of us on the flight down.

We plan to embark ourselves. We have no mobility issues and just feel better about keeping our stuff with us. We don’t have a problem rolling a carry-on with us until our cabin is ready on embarkation day.

You are NOT crazy. We pack a 21" bag, no matter how long the trip,

even though we drive to the port.

  9. I used to enjoy Guerlain's Shalimar and Nina Ricci L'air du Temps but so many people complain of being disturbed by scented products, I stopped wearing scents. More and more people say it gives them a headache and I'm afraid to make someone ill with my perfume and got away from using it. Now and then I miss it. :o

Thank you, very much, for your thoughtfulness.

  10. What a great thread! We will be in Ketchikan on June 20th and were wondering if we should book a tour but it really sounds like a great place to explore on our own. We are only there from 6am until 12:30pm which does not sound long enough! Thanks everyone!

We have been there several times and never take a tour.

One of our favorite ports. Don't miss going up to the hotel

to see their totems. Visit Dolly's house, walk Creek Street.

Be sure to visit the museum. Take a close-up photo of one of the

    totem faces.

  11. Thank you. We are coming from the east so I may just look into Sumas anyway. I have to check a map but can you get to Sumas without going as far west at I 5? I know a stupid question, I should just look! We are coming from NJ so it doesn't matter how far east we cross!

If you have the time. If you have never been there. Get out your map.

Cross the border anywhere east of the Rocky Mountains and take a look at anywhere in the Canadian Rockies before taking Canada 1 on to Vancouver. The scenery is spectacular anywhere from Calgary and on west.

  12. Dave, you totally deserve a smug moment. :) This has become a "go to thread" for me....I look forward to checking it out at least once each day. I've really enjoyed and admired all of the varied and terrific photos.

Here in Kansas, it's hard for me to come up with something interesting to shoot. Corn fields have been looking attractive lately:eek: but not much else. I have a friend who shoots pictures for the Missourian magazine and I hope to go on some photo shoots with him this fall.

    Photo suggestions for you..

Shuttle Cocks (enjoy those things every time I'm in town!)

I'd love to see a photo of them.

  13. I have Photoshop Elements on my computer - but I haven't been able to figure it out. Feeling a little stupid here. I have been relying on Picasa. It works well for basics, but I see other things I would like to do as well. Another class in the future, I suppose.

That program is like eating an elephant - take little bites. Start very simple. Get a photo up in editor, type ctrl-l (Levels) and play with the sliders, click on reset and click on auto - see what changes and how you like those changes. Go to your library and hunt for books, our library system has tons of them. I liked the authors Scott Kelby or Philip Andrews to help me get going. Some folks like the for Dummies books, I hate them.
