  1. Nice pics everybody! I think I am going to try to talk my parents into this camera.

Mom has been wanting a DSLR, but she is upgrading from a silly point n shoot. Plus if they get a DSLR they would have to get a better lens for everyday use than the kit lens it comes with and that just adds up to too much $$$$

    this Panasonic seems awesome!!!!

I might even consider it myself. is everybody happy with the 24x zoom? I know I've seen other bridge cameras with longer zooms so I was just curious.

anybody know if there is a camera similar to this pansonic but WITH the wifi? I feel like wifi would make things super easy for loading pics from camera to computer!

    thoughts? thanks!

Get your mother to hold one. It is very light compared to many other cameras and that would probably appeal to her. I think it a first rate camera. The lens is superb. Any problems there were I created myself.

  2. What's the best way to get to the West Quay Shopping centre?

Your question has been answered Kinkacruiser as above. We sail from Southampton usually and always stop the night before. We walk up to the town via the park and head up into the shopping area in the High Street. We have have always found it to be pleasant start to the holiday.

I just searched on Southampton Town wall and it threw up a really interesting pdf of the old town and fortifications.

The High Street in England was nearly always the main street of the town, except where I am living in Cornwall where it is usually called Fore Street.

    Enjoy your trip.

  3. I'm glad I saw your blood moon, I took some photos of the moon last night and they came out orange but looked a normal colour when I took the shots. I put it down to the dust we have had from the Sarah during recent weeks. I am in Cornwall, UK.

I never seem to be able to post pics here...Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

That was odd, it worked this time. Sorry to be a pain. This one is through some Ash trees and it was the colour expected.

  4. If you have your photos uploaded to a site like Picasa, Photobucket or similar you should be able to post photos here. For both mentioned sites, all I need to do is bring up the photo, right click and select 'copy', then come to my post here, right-click again and select 'paste'

Thanks for that, I was successful with my orange moon, but failed with the next one but this site seems to be playing up today, so will try later.

  5. Sarah Dust makes it all the way to the UK? I've seen it in the Southern Caribbean but I didn't know it went up your way too. I learn something new every day! :)

We get a dusting most summers but it hardly warrants a mention, just a car wash. This year it arrived with pollution from Europe and caused more problems.

  7. We sailed in it and were on from the Azores to Southampton in the first of the many storms of our wet and windy winter and I expect most bugs to have blown or washed away by now.

I tend to pick up colds and coughs more on a flight of a couple of hours than weeks on a ship - any ship.

  8. We sailed above the Artic Circle a couple of years ago in the Balmoral. It was a superb trip and remember the Captain who was a Norwegian giving almost a running commentary on what to look out for as we sailed along. I can't recall any talks on Norway but I did a lot of homework before sailing to help my enjoyment and experience.

I was surprised at how little wildlife we saw but not soon after we returned home I saw that Bregen had the largest number of whales swim into the fjiord.

  9. We sailed with the Balmoral to the Carribean and back last Nov/Dec and took the package. We found their table wines to be OK and unusually for me I enjoyed the White and Rose' to the Red. Stella on draught and Spitfire canned ale were the only beers and they were fine. A friend was not on the package and the Spitfire then came in a bottle. The Gin was not complained about and came with either canned slimline tonic or from a pump. The other spirits I tried was their whisky and rum.

As far as I am concerned it was very good value for money. I am doing another month cruise later this year with Fred but have not signed up for the package yet as I prefer not to drink every day, but I expect I will spend a lot more and probably drink every day.

  10. The Balmoral is sailing from Southampton on 1st September and visiting various ports in Canada and also New York and Boston. A link would be deleted but a search for, "Canadian Fall with New York & Boston - Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines." might be of interest. I have booked and doing the trip from your side of the Atlantic would cut out the five days times two crossing.

We enjoy Fred Olsen and if you share a table with people whose company you enjoy the chances are they will be with you for the cruise instead of running off to speciality dining.

  11. I have just read a review of the 32 day trip on the Balmoral where the writer appears horrified at the way the All Inclusive package was abused on the ship.

"The usual range of middle-aged men prop up the bar from coffee time to dinner on sea days. They sit there getting louder and louder (and uncouth) Spoiling other people's relaxation in the Morning Light pub, and the musicians when they are playing. In the lounges in the evening others are at massive consumption in a small time, so performers are drowned out by raucous talking/ laughter. which again spoils the majority enjoyment."

I confess I took advantage of the package and found it to be good value but at no time was I aware of that sort of behaviour either in the restaurant or during the shows that I went to. The men at the bar were there because they found it a good way to socialise and during the times I spent in that bar or when passing through I was never aware of any bad or offensive behaviour.

There were very few middle aged men on the trip either but I suppose most of us would be happy to be described as such.

  12. Well there is a bit of ambiguity there: it says that speciality coffee is not included, but does not mention ordinary tea/coffee/hot-chocolate served in the bars (or where-ever).

Does anybody know if these are included, as I like to drink lots of hot chocolate while cruising?

I don't think that is ambiguous. Speciality coffee is not included. If you want to drink hot chocolate that is available as a diy option at various spots from memory. I have no experience of it being served in the bars. If in doubt ask Fred.

  13. I agree with this, and my initlal question was, IF I lose my camera and I have any and all of my info on the camera: 1) I am not at home, can't contact me there; 2) my phone is on airplane mode, can't contact me there; 3) again airplane mode/no internet, can't contact me via email... so isn't the only way to contact me while I'm still ON vacay is to include my itin? And what are the chances whomever finds my camera will go to such lengths?

Perhaps the name of next of kin and their email would do the trick. If you are travelling you wouldn't get it back until you get home unless you are very lucky.

If anyone finds a nice shiny sony camera in Sri Lanka, It's mine. There are no details of me but lots of photos. The plus was a friend had photos of all the same locations and with the insurance I was able, due to digital cameras getting cheaper, to buy a better camera.

  14. Graham Houghton has compiled a lot of information which I am trying to get to grips with. I have always used the easy option when taking photos and am usually pleased. Clearly it takes a bit of practice. Not this weekend though as we have some bad weather arriving from across the Atlantic for the weekend, although you acn try out the camera settings indoors to get the hang of it.
