1. I did send back the forms. I'm worried if she needed the epi pen, that she wouldn't have it administered in time. How long before someone could get there to give it to her? I get they don't want the liability, but I'd be willing to sign a waiver. It's super easy to inject. I don't trust my 6 year old to do it herself. We're on the Gem.

Medical Center is Deck 4 right next to mid ship elevators, Splash Academy is on Deck 12 mid ship elevators. They have a "crew only" elevator in the back of the medical center that goes up and down mid ship. My daughter suffered a head injury onboard breakaway on the splash area pool, breakaway is a huge ship compared to Gem and the medical staff were by her side within 3-5 minutes, including grabbing immobilization equipment.

Go to the open house as soon as you get on board to register your daughters and ask to speak with the head of the splash academy onboard your sailing. They told me that a medical emergency call from the splash academy is immediately responded to within minutes. Based on knowing the exact location of the patient versus needing to find us on the pool deck I would think the response times would be even faster than they were for my daughter's head injury.

We also told splash academy make the medical emergency call to the medical center as well as to call us and we would also head for the splash academy. My husband and I spent the first day wondering the ship learning where the aft stairs up and down the ship ended up so that we could always find them.

The splash academy staff are very aware and conscious of the kids and particularly the kids with allergies, they will give her an allergy alert on her wrist band. We received a phone call that she was breathing fine but had developed a red spot. Did we want them to ask medical to come up or would we stop by? We also learned after running into the ship doctor in the splash academy area we learned that the doctors/nurses also roam the ship and stop by the kids area.

  2. Has anyone left an Epi-Pen at the kid's club? My daughter has a peanut allergy. I emailed the access desk and they said the staff wouldn't give her the Epi-Pen if she needed it. I'm worried that if she needed it, the nurse or dr. wouldn't get there in time. Anyone have any experience with this?

    Thanks!

What ship are you sailing? How old is your daughter? My daughter has anaphylaxis to latex as well as cross reactive fruits and we bring a set of epi-pens as well as her own personal first aid kit onboard specifically for splash academy. We've sailed 3 times without an allergy issue, her medication kit has remained with the splash academy staff all week.

The access desk is correct, the splash academy staff are not able to administer epi-pens. Have you completed the 4 page access desk needs form? The medical center is notified based on this form regarding the allergies onboard and in the kids center. Also, request a pager or handi-phone they have them on hand for usually the non potty trained children but also hand them out for allergy children where there is a need to immediately reach a parent.

With my daughter's allergy there are usually questions that don't come up until after we've dropper her off or they are getting ready to do face paint or something else that they will call to ask if something is safe or not. Splash academy has come up with amazing substitutions on the fly that my daughter is as included as everyone else.

I was very worried to leave my severely allergic three year old child in splash academy and after 3 cruises and working with the access desk and splash academy program director NCL is the only line we will sail with our daughter. I've called every other cruise line and no one can match the level of safety and access needs accomodations NCL has provided.

If you have specific questions that you would rather not share publicly please feel free to e-mail me at daadme at gmail dot com

  3. Does anyone have information on the balcony differences between the family balcony versus the large balcony on decks 8 or 9? We are looking to book the Escape for March 2016. Have to wait until after our dawn cruise in 2 weeks to have our FCC. I was excited to see connecting door and non connecting door large balcony staterooms depending on deck. Also, I see the splash academy and guppy nursery on the plans, has Entourage been listed on the plans for the teens?

  4. Naww. I'm predicting that someone allergic to fish will complain that the passageway carpeting almost killed them.

We sail norwegian because there carpet won't kill my daughter. Yes, I've had other cruise lines tell me they could make x, y and z safe but that their carpet contains latex..Not going to work with a 4 year old to keep her off the floor.

  5. Last time we cruised, the kids were in kids club, which I and the kids loved. This year, they have both aged out, but are excited about being old enough to go to Entourage.

So, for all you parents who have traveled with teens...did your teens like the teen club? Did you, as parents, like the teen club?

As a mother of a JUST turned 13-year-old girl who thinks she is going on 17...how much inter-gender or inter-age fraternization goes on? I love the idea of her meeting new friends her own age, I am a little more nervous about her attending a dance with 17-year-olds.

As a mother of a 14-year-old boy who thinks he is too cool for everything...how likely is it that Entourage will hold his attention over the pick up games of whatever it is they play on the sport court. 'Cause I would feel a little better about 13 yo daughter in teen club if 14 yo son was there.

I saw on the dailies there are Entourage parties that go from 11pm - 1am. Is that a bunch of kids eating pop corn and watching movies until 1 in the morning, or is that a bunch of teens dirty dancing under strobe lights?

See how my worry-mom brain works?

So...parents of teens...tell me about the Entourage shenanigans your kids have engaged in so I know exactly what to itemize on my kids don't do list.

    Thank you!

I am assuming you are asking for your upcoming cruise on the Dawn in March. Dawn entourage is different from a larger ship. Our 13 year 6 month old went to Entourage and we too were concerned. Yes, she stayed out until 1am, she was in the entourage area with other teens. Also a little hint, if you're worried you can walk around the outside of the ship on the Dawn and actually look into entourage and splash academy as you walk deck 13. We often found her with friends in garden cafe or the forward hot tub on deck 13. She checked in with us and had a blast. She still keeps in touch with friends made on the ship. There are organized activities and times that are supervised.

  6.
Oakman sorry for your frustration but as others have stated it is what it is and really that it the chance you take. I wondered why they had two balcony guarantees when I checked it a few weeks ago seemed strange enough that if we were booking I would have asked questions. Looking at your screenshot you got the UDP? Most of us that have a midship BA on this cruise have our own frustration the UDP special came out a week or two after final payment date so we are paying for drinks. Be happy to meet up and we can grip together. Heck first round is on me since I only have to buy my own. It is small ship and you are close to the elevators hopefully something happens with NCL and you get moved but if not lets go and make the best of it and have a good time.
I am also on your sailing and have sailed the dawn before in the DOS which is as far forward on the Dawn as you can get and walked to the aft kids club several times a day. The Dawn is a smaller ship that access from the forward elevators and then across on deck 7. I am sympathetic to your situation and as your knees are a concern, have you considered reaching out to the access desk rather than your PCC regarding your mobility and the room assignment?
  7. I want to purchase a Ride Safer Vest for my nearly four year old daughter so that I won't need to bring a car seat. I originally wanted to purchase a bubblegum, but my daughter won't turn four until after our cruise, and weighs only 33 lbs (despite being nearly 42 inches tall). Anyone have any experience using this vest? Specifically, would taxis have the required lap and shoulder belt needed? We are taking a cruise to the Bahamas.

Yes, we traveled with the saferider when my daughter was 3 years old, I've used it in the Bahamas and Mexico. Roatan and Belize we were on a boat or bus so although I brought it I couldn't use it. If getting a taxi my daughter would take one of the outboard seats in the back of the vehicle to ensure the right belt configuration.

  8. We are bringing a bubblebum with us on this next cruise, she is 4 years old, 43 lbs and 43 inches meeting the minimum requirements for the booster seat between the airport and our hotel as well as the hotel taxi to the cruise ship. I've not found cars I can strap our seat or even the saferider we brought last year while cruising.

  9. There is no pediatrician onboard that is absolutely correct. The physicians are board certified in family practice. They are capable of treating and managing an infant or child, the challenge is the limited equipment available onboard for management of a young infant or child. The physicians also are not full time onboard the cruise ship, they typically rotate between the ship and then their full time practice somewhere else. The physician that treated my 3 year old daughter's head injury with total paralysis last year aboard the Breakaway until we could be medically evacuated from the ship was the most amazing physician I have ever met and I would trust him with our family's care again in a heartbeat. She has fully recovered and I attribute her recovery to his decisions onboard that were fully discussed with my husband and I regarding her care.

As others have stated finding a taxi with the appropriate seat belts for your car seat will be very difficult in Nassau. Also any busses will not have the seat belts needed for securing a carseat that basically if she is still in an infant carrier the only reason to bring it is that it doubles or is a part of the stroller/travel system. We found that up until around 18 months to 2 years we were better off wearing our daughter while traveling.

NCL will provide a pack n play in your room depending on your room type this can make it very tight, particularly on breakaway, depending on how the bed and sofa are configured.

  10. That's what our PCC said as well.

We just booked a Getaway cruise today with the Freestyle Choice promo.

Our PCC guaranteed us that everyone in the cabin will get the Ultimate Dining Package, including our 7 yr old. We really want to watch the Illusionarium so it was a big deal for us that we don't need to pay extra for our daughter.

She'll probably like Moderno and Teppanyaki too! :D

My 3 year old loved Moderno! We actually ate there twice!

  11. Wow, that is so great that this worked for you! Still too ugly and nasty in the "ex" department.......don't think I could handle him and his mistress on the same ship.......blech.....anyhow, thanks for the info you guys, I will have my ex contact NCL asap and have that transferred over, hoping for a cruise soon!

Perfectly understand it was 6 years post divorce for us when we did this and after working for a year in family therapy toward this goal! Keep it in the back of your mind as everyone heals.

  12. My 3 year old (3 weeks after her 3rd birthday) did not disturb anyone during her dinner at cirque. I am surprised everyone is so against a child attending. She was glued to the performance and loved every minute of it. She ate the meal brought for her and sat in her seat between her dad and I the entire evening. We sat in the back in a booth and near the door. The only thing she did do at the very end after the show and as we were leaving and talking with our server was take the round pillow in the booth and recreate a portion of the show.

  13. Not pricing related but logistics of single parent cruising, check each port of call on the cruise you are looking at and determine their entry/exit requirements for children. There is a form on NCL for children not traveling with parent which should be signed by the non traveling parent (some say they don't do this step) DH does so that should something happen to him I have permission for the children onboard. Also a notarized letter from the non traveling parent authorizing travel and the dates/times of the trip specifically listing ports of call. Also, check on your DD passport, if it needs to be renewed both parents need to be present during the renewal.

  14. Okay... can someone help us out with the math here?

We (three, but lets just say two because one of us is a three and a half year old) are booked for a 10 day cruise in an inside cabin because that's all we need, but with this inside cabin you can't get the promo that is going on right now.

If we switch to a oceanview, the minimum to be able to get the promotion, the cost of the trip goes up $340.

How many drinks are $340? Over the course of 9 days (the last doesn't count) for two people how much would we need to drink a day to make it worth upgrading our room to save money on drinks in the long run with the promo?

Also at 3 1/2 years old your child would be getting a child soda package as well. That price also fits into the equation. Our daughter was able to get any of the juices used as mixers for the other drinks form the bar with her soda package, orange juice, pineapple juice, apple juice, etc. She loved a sprite/juice combo.

  15. Also, keep in mind on some ships there are also some great ways to have a joint vacation after divorce. The ships are large enough and with freestyle that each can book their own thing and the child can spend time with both parents.

We sailed last year on the Dawn with my stepchildren, their mom and her husband, my husband and I and our daughter. Each parent spent a sea day with the kids as well as 1 port of call, then we did joint excursions together in 2 ports of call. In our case the kids spent the night before with the same parent they would be with the next day. Our cabin stewards were great and asked that we simply leave a note with the number of people for that night, so they knew how many beds to make up. Also, up to 4 adults can check out the kids form the splash academy so all four parents were listed. Plus we had the freedom to book dinner reservations for the number of people that we would actually be eating together between both families it was a combination of (2, 3, 4, 5 or 8).

My husband and I will be sailing again in a couple weeks and I will be purchasing a Future Cruise Reward for us as well as my stepchildren's mom. We are starting to plan our next joint family cruise for 2016.

  16. There is a kids hibachi menu in addition to that they can bring the regular kids menu from the main dinning room. My 12 year old ate from the adult menu, our 3 year they made the kids chicken, the only thing she wasn't served was the salad (I have no idea other than that what was different from the adult but she was free). The servers loved that she devoured her own edamame bowls plus her older brother and sister's.

  17. Was it the actual access offer who told you that Distilled water is not provided? Or was it one of the PCC's? Distilled water has been provided on our past 3 cruises for my dad's CPAP. I am very surprised that was the response you received. NCL is the only cruise lines access department that is willing to work with my daughter's needs and ensure that we have a fun and safe vacation.
