  1. Some people have been touring before a cruise and need to have laundry done soon after boarding.

Some others will be touring once the cruise ends and will need to have laundry done before the end of the cruise.

That would be me this summer. I will be getting on the ship with 6 days worth of dirty clothes, and needing 5 days of clothing after the cruise. I am not planning on spending any of my Rome or Barcelona time doing laundry, nor will I have much time or desire to do it myself on the ship. I probably will not send all my pre cruise clothing at once, but I will be sending them the first few days, DH and I will be away for a month with 1 suitcase each. The free laundry is a benefit Princess has given us, and we are not taking advantage of the system by using it.

  2. You are correct in making sure that you log off properly in order to stop using minutes, however you are wrong in relation to it getting expensive if you go over your allotted time. When you reach the allotted time you just get cut off, there are no additional costs.

I always just book a package before we leave. It's not essential and as others have said you can get net access at every port, especially in Europe. I just like it on board so I can Skype the kids occasionally and catch up with emails etc. Preferably when in port I would rather be seeing things rather than on a tablet.

You are correct about getting cut off when your minutes run out. On our last trip, the person in the Internet Cafe said they finally changed it from the old way where they did keep charging you, I used to be so paranoid about it.

Fortunately we get some free minutes on Princess because I do not want to unplug. I have people at home I want and need to stay in touch with.

  3. Hey guys, taking my first Med cruise and we're very excited! It'll be us and two teens (16,18) and we're looking for off the beaten path type stuff. We typically like to get places ourselves but not opposed to a really good tour company if it hits the stuff we like.

Mykonos- Don't really know anything about this place, I read there is a small island we can get a ferry to that has ruins?.

Information on Delos ferry and ruins HERE

  4. Where do they serve afternoon tea? We too will be first time Princess passengers in August, and are very much looking forward to it. We have sailed with Seabourn, Seadream, Royal, Celebrity, and Carnival (once!).

Please keep up with the helpful tips- they are all most appreciated. Very excited for this trip to Scandinavia, and would love any info anyone has, esp in regards to those with experience with this itinerary. Thank you very much in advance!

It's usually in the same dining room that was open for lunch. Check the Patters (the daily activities/dining schedule). It should be listed on the back page. I've heard that hey also have the scones at the buffet.

  5. What would be the best way to

get to these places ? Maybe the trolley ? Looks too far to walk to all of them. Thx :)

The state street trolley will take you near the Presidio and the Courthouse. I don't remember how far the mission is because we had a car when we went there long ago.We did walk to the Presidio from the boat, and took the trolley back. In my opinion, the mission is more interesting than the Presidio. It had more to see.

Another idea is to rent a car and drive to Solvang, an old Danish town not too far away.

  6. I will admit right away that I am a moron (read cruise neophyte) and I need a very detailed description of cell phone texting, calling and wifi usage on board ship.

If I have ATT, do I have to buy wifi access from the ship for the cruise? If I buy wifi, will my family be able to text between ourselves when at sea? Or do we need a special level of service to achieve this?

If you use your phone on the ship, your bill will be awful. You pay the ship's rates not AT&T. You should keep your phone on airplane mode while onboard.

The ships now have Princess at Sea Intranet. You can text other people onboard at no cost.

Buying WiFi will enable you to use the ship's internet.

When we are at port, if we have wifi, will be we able to text between those on an excursion and those on board. I ask this last understanding that this is not always possible, but is it conceivable?

When you are in port, you will be using AT&T, so it would depend on your plan. You should call them and ask.

My largest concern is being able to exchange texts between 4 people on a regular basis.

Also depends on your plan. With Sprint, I have free texting internationally. T-Mobile does too. So call AT&T and ask

With regards to making phone calls, I'm only concerned with one phone being able to do this. What is my best option to achieve this?

    Call ATt&T.

    Please advise, Mary Louise

Maybe someone with AT&T will know the carrier specifics.

  7. The Elite reception in the evening wouldn't factor into the AIBP decision, as drinks at the reception are not complimentary. There is one particular drink on special, but that's it. You can also see a pic of the food offerings earlier in one of my posts.

That's disappointing that they only had the one drink special every night. On the Star in December they had all the same drinks as always, but they were all available every night on special. Made me happy to have my margarita whenever I wanted it.

  8. And another vote yet for Barcelona Day Tours. They will organize small group tours, and you may be able to join one that already exists. Email them to see what's available, and definitely share it on your roll call. Also, share it on the roll call of the cruise before you, Someone getting off the ship may be interested too.

  9. It was the most offensive thing I could think of on short notice.

I wrote an app that alerted me when I went in and out of wifi coverage on royal. I had a phone in my pocket set with a beep notification.

In 90% of the locations on the ship, I couldn't even hear it. Show lounge - really, really loud. Dining room - loud. Atrium - loud.

So, I'm kind of amused by the posters here who are sure they will be annoyed by notifications. I think they must be the same folks who are disturbed by the helicopters bringing the crew on board each day.

Just so you know, I am not annoyed by notifications (except perhaps in a theater). I thought your comment was really funny. On the other hand, my phone is almost always in my back pocket on vibrate anyway, Also, I agree that cruises should be relaxing, but some of us don't want to disconnect from the world or can't. But, people can step outside to have conversations rather than yelling into the phone at the dining room table.

  10. We were on Ruby in January and we used it. Nice way to look at the activities and communicate. Just wish it alerted the person and you didn't have to keep checking the app.

I asked the manger in the internet cafe about that on our December cruise. He told me that they were still working out bugs on the system, and that by (sometime) this year the alerts should be working. Hope that is true by my cruise this summer.

One thing I noticed though was that the Patters online did not always match the printed Patters. There were quite a few mistakes.

  11. OP, Your waiter sounds like the one we had on the Star in December, He told us what we should order and was really upset that we didn't follow his advise, He disappeared and we had to hail down other servers during our meal. There were 7 of us for dinner. 2 meals went back (way overcooked)., 2 meals were really good, and the other 3 were ok. It was a disappointing meal, especially since we have had wonderful meals in the Crown Grill in the past. Fortunately, they had the molten chocolate dessert which makes up for just about everything,

  12. I'm sure this has been answered somewhere, but I was wondering what the policy is on bringing my own bottled water onboard? I will be on the Ruby Princess soon. I thought that I've read somewhere that it doesn't matter how much. So I can just bring an entire case of bottles in addition to all my luggage?

I often tape a luggage tag to the top of a case of water and send it straight to my room with my bags. I like having bottles to take on excursions,

I'm concerned that cruise lines will all stop allowing this because we recently got an email from NCL and they are prohibiting carrying most liquids aboard (including water), so chances are everyone will eventually follow. They claim it will speed up security when boarding, but of course it's more to do with $.

But for now, Princess has no issue with bringing water onboard.
