  1. I have done both and loved both, although Explorer was 5 plus years ago.

I would lean towards Breakaway for the newer ship, extra days, and slides. We also loved the "Waterfront" - Deck 8 and the outdoor dining.

    We enjoy both cruise lines.

    Have fun!

  2. My husband take 1 bonine a day and have zero side effects. We have found this most helpful even when off the ship as we are often on excursions that might involve a boat or being on windy roads and it has covered us in those situations as well.

Agree with always go for the fresh air and not your cabin recommendation as well.

I am sure you will find one or more of these many ideas posted here will help you.

    Enjoy.

  3. Love this thread. I'm extremely fair and freckled. Irish and German roots. Malignant melanoma in the family.

For me it is not the specific SPF # so much as applying and re-applying and re-applying.

And I reiterate whoever brought up remembering ears, lips, etc. My lips were badly burned and swollen (which is not fun) on at least one cruise.

I also have had people just come up to me and warn me about the sun when they see me on the beach (I am already covered with sunscreen). This will probably still be happening to me when I am in my 80s. I try to be polite, but it is a bit much.

    :)

  4. Can't pick just one...

1)Very fun vacations with our two sons from about age 13 to 22.

    2) Returning with my husband to Antigua (where we went on our honeymoon) 28 years later.

    3) Just viewing the ocean and star-filled sky at night on any cruise ship.

    4) On an RCCL ship, we ate dinner each night with a family from Ireland and a family from Brooklyn. We live in NJ and are originally from NY. There were the 3 couples and our 5 children. There were many laughs and the man from Brooklyn belted out O Solo Mio at the end of one dinner in the MDR. The couple from Ireland told us that our teenage children were the nicest American teenagers they had ever met. We were very proud of them but they were genuinely enjoying as well the company and spirit of the younger Irish kids --- quite an experience.

    5) An excursion to Jost Van Dyke. Met a wonderful couple on same excursion who invited my husband and I and a few other couples back to their beautiful and I believe largest suite on the ship multiple times for cocktails. They were fun, kind, and generous.

  5. I am going to start a thread on how you tell an "oldie" .... they can't resist telling you how many cruises they have been on, etc.

Love the newbies because we were all were one once...

Even if I was one when I turned 16 on a cruise in 1972. Did not go on another until 2004.

Loved the ocean then, love the ocean now.

  6. My first cruise was in 1972. I went with my parents and younger brothers on the Olympia from New York City to Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, and St. Marteen. I celebrated my 16th birthday on the cruise.

We had a terrible storm the first night, but things calmed down after that.

I so appreciated the history above of the Olympia!

    Thank you.
