  1. Thanks for the good report!

It's a long story, that I won't share at this time, but we are in a Superior Veranda suite on the port side of the ship. We are hoping that will give us better viewing on the return thru the passage and while in Glacier Bay. My only concern with the cabin we are in is that we are on the top passenger deck directly under the Lido Resturant and I was wondering if that might pose a noise problem. Not so much for me since I have removable bionic ears [hearing aides, LOL], but the rib has excellent hearing and is a light sleeper.

    Any clue?

    Steve

Steve, we had a deluxe balcony on deck 6 so I can't help I am afraid.

I will say this though, when we were on the NCL Pearl, we were on deck 11 in a minisuite right under the Italian restuarant that was very near the lido restuarant. We never heard anything, except one night, when we had high winds,(this was around 3 am and the restuarant closed at 10 I think) it sounded as though the heavy winds were knocking the chairs around, that the chairs sliding around up there. It was only that one night-I imagine the staff had a mess to clean up the next morning there.

The Westerdam seemed to me a much nicer ship and so I would think that would not be a problem if it was not on the Pearl.

Ask on the HAL board, I am sure there will be someone who has stayed there on a cruise who can tell you. If not the Westerdam, the Eurodam or the Zuiderdam, they are all vista class, sister ships.

  2. Very first cruise coming up on 6/21!!! HAL Westerdam to Alaska w/rib, Bro & SIL, Sis & BIL, & parents. 50 - 82 years young and all first timers. Actually wondering what to expect since it's all new to us.

Nice to see other CC's so close by!!

I loved that ship. It is really nice. I hope you have a balcony. Our Alaska cruise was on HAL Statendam and so we had an oceanview, (older ship no balconies unless you booked a suite which was more than our budget could do) but on that ship, the oceanviews had picture windows and the windows had a ledge. My daughter and I both sat up on the ledge watching whales.

  3. Hi there! My fiancé and I are from Georgia (Augusta) and we're taking a honeymoon cruise April 4th, 2010 on the Valor! :o

Hi lovebird. Congraduations on your upcoming wedding.

I am from Augusta, Ga, I was also born there. I was an army brat. My father retired there,he was 35 when I was born and so I was in grade school when he retired from the army. My parents ended up staying there. They are both gone now, but I have a brother in Hephzibah, a sister in Waynesboro, and a sister in Grovetown, so they are all still near by. I live in Douglasville, near Atlanta so 3 hours away.

they all have children, many around Augusta

  4. We keep trying to get my parents to cruise with us but my mom says she will not cruise until she first cruises to Alaska. I keep trying to convince her that she should get experience on a Caribbean cruise before spending all that money on an Alaskan cruise.

Oh they will love it and chances are much better than they would the Caribbean, because of their age. The Caribbean is entirely a different "feel." The caribbean is more about enjoying the sun and having a good time. Alaska is mere about seeing the natural beauty.

Now that I am older I am not as into the night time partying/ daytime out door sunning part, but I still do love seeing the ocean. And so I go to the caribbean to see the ocean from a cruise ship balcony. If I could afford, it I would go to Alaska more.

Unfortunately there are many places I have yet to see, I do hope to go back to Alaska, but first I want to go to other places I have not yet been. Evey 3 to 5 years we take a more expensive vacation, and between times about once a year we do a cruise in the Caribbean, simply because it is more affordable for us.

  5. Hey everyone! Just found this thread. Checking in from Newnan. My husband and I are heading to Alaska on the Coral Princess on June 15th. It's our first trip there and I have been hanging out on the Alaska Boards devouring all of the great info over there.

We went to Alaska in May 2001. so it is coming up on 9 years since we were there. My hubby and I started cruising in 98 and loved it. My FIL wanted to go to Alaska and talked us into taking a cruise there.

Now Alaska is not the "feel" of a caribbean. Much more laid back. However, that is not necessarily a bad thing for those of us who are no longer interested in partying hard. I am now "laid back" even on a Carribbean cruise! I loved the natural beauty we saw,the scenery is breath taking. That blue ice is something else. We hope to go again one day. The only reason we haven't is, that was a considerably more expensive cruise than the Caribbean, and we can't afford trips like that every year.

Anyway I am jealous! Have fun!

  6. Wehn we were on Carnival Miracle back in 2004, we sailed to Freeport from Jacksonville and we saw this ship docked-it looked like a rusty dump. Heck, the abandoned "ghost" Premier cruiseline ships left at the dock looked better-and safer-for that matter-and you KNOW those ships had been sitting there since 2000.

I also want to add, Discovery lines, like Seaescape is pretty much a ferry from Ft. Lauderdale to Freeport and back. It also has a casino.

  7. Hey "Grinch"....I'm in Newnan, GA also. My next cruise is 4/4/09 on NCL.

The last ship I was on, was the NCL Pearl. I have been to Newnan a few times. Friends who previously lived in D'ville bought a house there and we have visited them a few times, you are about 30 miles from me.

  8. I have heard that the tap water has less salt than most bottled waters. Maybe Philip can clear the air on this.

I guess this is intended to point out that certain conditions/behaviors unique to a cruise can elevate BP as can any stressful situation. However I can rule out all or almost all of these stress inducing situations and nevertheless I have experienced a spike on last 3 cruises.

What about the sodium level in the ship´s tap water?

Now I have okay blood pressure but I do swell on cruises. I tried bringing my own bottled water but I still swelled. No not from overeating and drinking, I can't, I have diabetes, and not from dirnking sodas. I do not drink carbonated drinks.

However I did drink the coffee prepared with that water and I ate the food cooked in that water. I now only bring enough bottled water for excursions.

  9. I live in Covington!

Hello karen! for all I know I have seen you in Belk or at that antique shop. I usually go into both places when I am visiting my MIL. Of course now that we have a Belk in D'ville, Belk is not as important to me.

  10. I leave for my cruise next month on the 19th.

I'm not sure if the yard sale that is in Villa Rica is apart of the "largest yard sale", but it is pretty big. For some reason I think I saw something in the VR new and views that the yard sale in VR is the last weekend in april...the weekend that I will be coming home from my cruise.

Okay I looked back and it was JCCollins and ttotty that are cruising right now. Ttotty lives in D'ville like me. JCCollins lives in Videlia. I hope they are enjoying themselves.

Is that yardsale thingie antiques? or is it a lot of clothing? I love antiques but I have enough used clothing that I do not wear!

Perhpas you can post when it is, and I can come and check it out.

  11. Well have our fellow cruisers left yet? I suppose my fellow Douglasville resident has as he said his crusie started the 12th.

vikinghchick was it you who has a cruise on the 14th?

I don't think that yardsale thing comes as far as D'ville. At least I have never seen it. Are you saying it is in villa Rica?

  12. Well Va Traveler, I agree that it is fun to really dress, like the old movies I used to watch when I was a kid. I would see the old stars like Clark Gable all dressed to the nines, and I can remember thinking when I grow up I want to go out and dance, all dressed up just like that. I thought it would be so easy to do. but you are right, we don't have many chances around here. And when you can , it costs a fortune, like at thecharity events....not something I frequent. But thanks for the advice. My DH and I will probably dress, if we can fit it in the suitcases ;) thanks for all your help everyone, i will report back.....L

That is why I would like to do Cunard one day. I suppose we will have to wait until retirement for my hubby to have the time-but I would love to "cross the pond" on Cunard and then return on a repositioning ship.

  13. The formal nights were pretty formal when we sailed with HAL. I wore a more formal dress for the first night (Captain's Gala) and a cocktail dress for the second event. Even though we were in the Caribbean, it seemed to be a more formal crowd when it came time for dinner.

Boardwalk babe, both VAtraveler, the OP, and myself found that HAL in the Caribbean, is not as dressy as it used to be, compared to NCL, Carnival, and those type lines, yes. But we both saw more cocktail/after 5 than black tie.

I did see this one couple, looked to be around 60 who were gorgeous! I saw them in one of the lounges dancing before dinner. She had on a halter style red satin evening gown with a few sparklies, but just a few, just enough to enhance the gown, not overwhelm it. She also had a great marabou shurg/wrap; her man was in a tux of course! They were something else!

Unfortunately, all though most looked nice at dinner, many dressed down. At 10 pm when we left dinner, many from early dinner were in shorts, and not even nice shorts, but cut offs and gym shorts. It certainly ruined the "mood."

  14. VaTraveler, I beleive cruises have gotten more causal. it seems every time I go they are a little more causal than the year before. My HAL cruise last April was more formal than my NCL cruise in November. However, I bleieve that is the difference in the 2 lines somewhat. It seemed to me cocktail or "after 5" is more appropriate than black tie on HAL nowadays for formal night. ON NCL though, you can wear resort causal and be fine. Of course they call their "formal night", "dress up or not night."

Dibbitz, I have no idea about how dressy your European cruse will be, but my TA was dressier than the Caribbean. My cruise on Celebrity Constellation in Sept. 07, was more dressy than my HAL Westerdam western Caribbean in April 08.

  15. I am from Suwanee - and patiently awaiting my next cruise. It should be fun - my cousin and her daughter from upstate New York and my daughter - who is currently living in California will be on the Carnival Legend for the 'exotic western caribbean' - is there a not-exotic one? - but we will be on the cruise as a reuinon to start with - I haven't seen my cousin for about 10 years now - but also my daughter's husband will be deployed with the Marines during this time - hope to take her mind off it a little (I don't think you can ever NOT think about that) but let's call it a diversion for her.:o

And I've always wanted to find someone to do a small part of that world's longest yard sale with - none of my friends have any interest.

Isn't Suwanee close to the Mall of Georgia? I have been there once or twice. Not recently though. I remember our going and seeing Fantasia in 3 D there I guess about 10 years ago now.
