1. We once had the famous: "I'm calling about Windows" scam...where they try to get your details.

OH told them that we'd just had our windows cleaned....;)

But- I always talk over the top, selling something to them and have now had a few saying that we'll be taken off the list, as we sound like a business.

I had not heard about that one until today. A friend of DDs, who is quite computer illiterate, received one, and after telling the "supervisor" that she would have her DH call after work, heard some words she had never heard before. (She has lived in several countries).

  2. Either way I'm going on one as a graduation gift to myself for just receiving my Master's 3 weeks ago.

    Cruising is fun :)

Congratulations on your Masters! :) A lot of work, and you deserve a good vacation.

A year after college 3 friends and I toured Europe by car. That was in 1956 and I still remember most of the trip. I have returned to two restaurants I remembered, both were still great!

  3. You might look into consulting a pain specialist for an epidural injection in the back. It helped me after PT and acupuncture failed to give me any relief. Needed the course of three shots to become pain free. Completed the procedure in May and was able to take 2 trips this summer including a 14 day AK cruise in July.

    Ev

    Absolutely!

Took me a long time to find the right Dr., but a pain specialist is the category.

    Good luck.

  4. Before you get all excited, you better check your port times. According to my best friend, who lives in Rosarito, the race is starting with motorcycles/4 wheelers THURSDAY night at midnight. THEN the cars/trucks/everything else including your old beat to s*** VW will leave Ensenada every 60 seconds on FRIDAY morning about 6AM. This may be off a little bit because of the nature of the race. BUT if you are in Ensenada on Sat, you probably won't see much of anything because they have already returned.

This is NOT a race on who crosses the finish line first. It is who has the shortest time, made all the checkpoints and DIDN'T CHEAT!!! Some cars take 2 days to finish. Most can make the 800-1000 miles (every year the race length varies) in about 16-20 hours depending on the length of the race. I hope you get to enjoy. It is a dusty, nasty mess so be prepared. There is NO safety for spectators so DO NOT get too close to the cars. This ain't the USA and NASCAR or even a desert race with fences and spectator barriers.

To tell you how slow and how dangerous this race is-someone just made a Cannonball run in 28 hours, 50 minutes 30 seconds-2803 miles. Now that is what I REALLY wanted for a wedding present. We made the run in a semi in 41 hours, 22 minutes from NYC to Carson Ca. I always thought we could chop at least 10 hours off that in a car but DH wasn't going for it. He thought 100 MPH in a semi was enough. 130-140 in a car on the interstate-told me I was NUTS!!!

I made it from Washington D.C. to Long Beach, Calif. in 4 days, stopping nights, in my first VW. Your semi probably made it up the passes faster than my VW.

Remember the roller for a gas pedal? My shoe had a dent in the sole forever after that.

That Cannonball car had a spotter in the back seat and a lot of electronic gear to keep from being stopped.

  5. Yep.But at least with tele-sales, you have the choice of practicing your foul language or leading the caller on.

And leading them on is a lot of fun. Interrupting by asking a question halfway through their spiel, to see if they're so brain-dead that they then have to start all over again from the beginning. And disclosing fictitious bank etc details. Every minute of my value-less time that I spend with them saves some other poor soul from being troubled.

I really do need to get out more :D

Always the risk of getting another call at 3am just to get their own back. But it's never happened - probably cos I'm not the only one who winds them up.;)

    JB :)

I saw a video of a man who led them on, to the point the scammer went to the airport to meet him! :p

Another joker told the caller to stay on the line, he was a policeman investigating a murder and why was he calling this number at this exact time? Did he have an accomplice there? etc. :D

  6. I agree, but it's the first thing I think of when I see a swim up bar, or several variations on that theme. Earlier this summer I stayed at a hotel in Vegas where the bar staff delivered drinks to the edge of the pool and there were many people drinking heavily who never left the water. I was sweltering and it was a tough decision whether to slowly die of heat exhaustion on the pool deck or get in that water.

    Ever swim in the ocean?

  7. I can remember driving golf balls off the fantail, and shooting skeet!! I also remember the Baked Alaska. Thanks people for reminding me. I had almost forgotten them....

Both of those, and the horse races. DW bought a horse and several of our new friends enjoyed hours of fun decorating horse and rider.

She won, and we won enough money to have a nice party.

Last few cruises, nothing exciting going on, glad we sailed years ago when it was fun and there were only one or two small (now!) ships in port.

  8. That is the written dress code but reality sometimes is different. No one will be turned away with a sport jacket.

Also, I have never seen them enforce no sleeves for breakfast. The cruise line is aware that people are getting up and going out for the day, often off of the ship. I personally have entered the MDR in the morning as well as blu with T-Shirts and then went immediately off the ship. I was not alone.

    T-shirts have sleeves.

If not, they would be called I-shirts. :p:cool:

  9. Please do not feed fish Cheerios (or anything else for that matter). It is a leading cause of the loss of diversity in many snorkeling spots. The more aggressive fish just out compete those that are less aggressive leaving the area with one or two types of fish.

Feeding of wildlife is seldom a good idea. Aim for observations not interaction!

    Off my soapbox now....

Use your soapbox anytime you have such good information/advice. :)

  10. Just got to wondering, how do people pick their CC names.

Mine is an anagram from when I used to work for P&O Ports (Canada).

In short form, that became "POPCAN". Probably not what most people think when they see the name. :)

(P&O Ports in Canada were eventually bought by Dubai Ports World, but "DUPWOR" didn't have the same cache, so I kept my old name. )

What's the story behind your CC name?

    Not very creative. :(

Taxguy was taken; started with taxguy7 but my other computer wouldn't take it so ended where I am.

  11. It is a shame that halftime shows are no longer shown on TV, there was something kind of special during the halftime show at the Florida A&M game. The Ohio Blind School Marching Band did a braille Scriptohio with the Ohio State band. They had two sousaphone "i" dotters (i.e a braille "i" is 2 dots). See the video:

    Great post.

YES! It's a great shame on the networks that they no longer show any of the half-time show. With a son in band and a girl I the girl's squad , we spent 7 years battling mosquitos to watch half-time shows. The boys and girls spend as much time in practice as the football players and deserve a lot of credit!

  12. You can use a visa service to get the visa.

    Brazil is spectacular.

We've visited Brazil several times and most recently on cruised the Amazon River earlier this year.

I would not let this change of policy stop me from going.

    Keith

We too have been to Brazil, and I prefer many other countries.

Yes, I been to Iuazu (sp)would rather go to Yosemite.

  13. OK, I get confused easily. $60.00 per person per day is placed on hold on our credit card. And the Hotel Service Charge will be part of that $60.00.

If you don't charge anything more (drinks, photos, gifts) on any given day, how long does the hold stay on your card?

    Day 1 - $60.00 hold, $12.00 charge each(HSC) total $24.00, leaving $36.00 on hold.

Day 2 - Is the hold only $60.00 or $60.00 plus $36.00? Minus $24.00 (HSC)

Day 3 - $60.00 hold plus whatever still hasn't been used from previous days? Minus $24.00 (HSC)

    You see where I'm going?

    They're not that smart!

  14. I remember the old days and my DH and I still dress to board and travel.

I could have commented on any one of the messages here -- choose to comment on yours because of your remark your daughter "howled" - this reminded me of something I saw on TV last night. For get what show, there was a interesting discussion that an Ivy League College on the east coast has a college class to teach students what dress and style use to be and how the average "housewife" in the l950s dressed to go shopping, church or anywhere for that manner. The name of the class is "Have We Become a Country of Slobs?"

When I saw this last night, I thought to myself at last, someone is recognizing there is a big need for improvement in this area today. I feel sorry especially for young people today, they have no role models. What will they look like when they get old? Just maybe the days of flip flops, shorts, tshirts as acceptable attire anywhere will change to something better. I hope so.

Even in these days of limited luggage allowance on air it is still possible to dress well, we do it easily. It is just a matter of priority and pride which is what motived folks so many years ago. I feel we lost that over the years.

Do remember the days when everyone dressed for breakfast, lunch and dinner. While that maybe extreme, I would be happy to see it done for dinner today. Thanks for taking me down memory lane.

I liked your post, even though I lived on the Island for years where shorts, flip-flops and T shirts are considered semi-formal. HAL said several "formal" nights so I took some dress shirts and old (Don't have any new) ties for dinner. Then found that Lido was a much nicer venue than the depressing MDR, and ate in shorts the rest of the cruise!

What I don't understand is the people that wear T shirts in the MDR. My grandsons learned in High School golf that a collar is required for access to any reputable golf course!

I always take T shirts on a cruise, for pajama tops.

  15. Gosh I remember those days well. Back when informal was a blazer and slacks with a shirt and tie. We went to Disneyland the year it opened and my dad wore a suit and my mother wore a nice dress. Time have surely changed.

You really took me back in time!

We lived not far from Anaheim when Disneyland opened and took our young son to it one of the first years. He had gone to the moon,:) until some older boys told him the trip was a Disney show.:(

My Aunt and Uncle cruised to Australia in the 50's. We went aboard to see the ship and wish them Bon Voyage, then came the announcement you no longer hear "All visitors must leave the ship now!".

  16. :D
-we breeze by the photographers

-we never attend any of those events just to get a free glass of that horrible wine or champagne

-we never attend those shopping promotions disguised as port talks

-we never shop at those so called approved stores during port stops
A lot of people agree with these!:D

Bingo used to be OK, but the last cruise (HAL) they kept an enormous % of the money played.
  17. DH is also a Vietnam Vet and he's still waiting for that 'thanks from a grateful nation'. I suspect we'll be long dead and never hear it. But I, too, go out of my way to provide that thanks to those who wear the uniform today. I know how much that means.

If I see a solider, sailor, airman, marine wearing dress uniform on formal night, he will get our thanks and admiration.

You can hear it now, THANKS!

  18. With regards to the altitude my husband and I both took altitude medication the entire time we were in Cusco. I didn't really like Lima at all - we had 6 hours between flights there and went into the Plaza de Armas for a walk around. This was nice and felt relatively safe but other parts of Lima are definately not safe and you need to be very careful with the taxis there.

    Michelle

I visited MP in 1952 or 3. Hotel Tourista was the only hotel for tourists, and they turned the hot water on about the time the train left, and off just before the train came back!!

I married a Peruvian 55 years ago, and she and our DD have both been to MP. It is one of the ancient wonders of the world!

Don't stay in Lima. get a hotel in Miraflores, safer, nicer and a great place to see the best of Peru. Only a short bus ride from Lima.
