  1. Hurtigruten is not big here in the states. Very few agents have any experience with it. If you look at hirtigrutens suggested ta's on their website you won't even find one listed for the states!!!! I was offered an $85 discount thru a TA, (on a 3000 fare) but I didn't feel it was worth going through a middleman for $85...

  2. My sorel caribou boots arrived today. Think I'll leave the uggs home and take these instead for the really cold weather. They seem like the perfect boot. Waterproof, felt lining and large enough for a wool sock as well if you order half size larger..

  3. I'm taking this trip in early March. I just ordered yaktrax pro...(they have a strap to keep them on) on Amazon. For boots I bought Ugg Adirondack... But I live in Michigan, so they will get plenty of use. You might want to look at sorel boots...great for cold snowy weather...

  4. Just to add from my experience... On Midnatsol we were in an N room, deck 4, #471. It is port side mid-ship. We found it noisy and I would not recommend it but we did ok and during the 11 night trip I think we got used to it. But I was told by other passengers on that trip that deck 4 rooms are noisy on the starboard side also. I think being in the bow would not be as noisy but I haven't tried it. If you can afford higher decks that might cut the noise. The window was nice but not that big of an advantage. Also, this level room does not have a TV... I think the inside rooms have TVs and if so I'd want to find out if they have a bow cam which can be very useful.

We spent most of our time looking from the panorama lounge or on deck. But I'd like to know that I'd be able get a good sleep... that would be more my priority next time.

    m--

thanks m, good info. Maybe I should just stick with what I have.. Cabin 416. I really just like the window to gage the weather. The rep at hurtigruten picked this one for me... So maybe I should just stop thinking about it so much and move on... Lol

  5. For the moment I can't see these "O" cabins on the French website, so on which deck are they located?

I would be fine with a deck 4 N cabin and I wouldn't spend more money to be higher up in the ship but to each his/her own.

The N cabins don't show on the deck plan, only on the reservation screen. They are all on deck 4. Toward the aft and forward. The N cabins are those on deck four, more midship (near the carlift) Thus the higher fare for cat O. Currently I'm in 416., cat L. Do you think it's worth about 600 more for a cat 0..., a larger window... I don't mind being forward, as I am right now. Just heard the port holes aren't that great.

  6. Does anyone know if the upper deck outside cabins have a better view than those on deck 4 of the Midnatsol? I'm thinking I should change my cabin now that more categories are available. I can now get an O (which we previously designated as N), a P or a U.

  7. I think I've discovered why the shortage of cabins. Looks like effective jan 2016,Hurtigruten has reclassified many of the cat N outside cabins to cat O based on their location. Cat O does not appear on the deck plans, but is offered on the reservation screen.

  8. Jane, was this the Clarion at the airport?

Yes, this was the Clarion at the airport. We used the Hurtigruten transfer once; the next time we just walked (we had small suitcases that roll) to the main square and took the airport bus. The former is easier; the latter is less expensive.

Thanks Jane! I'll probably just use the Hurtigruten transfer when I disembark.

  9. We have stayed at the Clarion twice after Hurtigruten trips. Very strange hotel (architecture), but really nice people at the desk and a decent restaurant. They even have (had) a breakfast buffet that started at 3:30 a.m. for people who have early flights.

  10. I know that planning is half the fun, but aren't you overthinking this a bit? ;)

It will be winter all throughout your trip, you should have the proper clothing and be used to the cold by then.

Personnaly, I would sleep at the airport (there's a Thon hotel there, reasonably price), or take a taxi. Yes, it's a bit more expensive, but I value my sleep :p But it's your trip, pick whatever solution suits your own priorities.

You are so right about overthinking.. I need to get a life... Lol.

living in Michigan, which may even be colder than Norway, I do know how to dress.. But I'm thinking more about my luggage getting soaked than myself.. Oh well, I'll ponder this later on.

  11. Considering it will be winter, if I choose to use the flybussen, is it best to stay at a hotel like the blu Norge, which has a bus stop, so I can wait indoors?

  12. I am going to book Bristol Bergen for my two days prior to the cruise. But for departure, I don't know that in the winter that I want to hang around bergen without a hotel room. If it's cold and rainy.. I may need a room to warm up in. Plus the Clarion is double the cost. For the same cost, I could stay in bergen and take a taxi to the airport!

  13. There is a 4 am as well... I didn't book a hotel yet. I don't think hurtigruten has transfers that early. In the brochure looks like they start at 9am. I would rather not stay at the airport.... But I suppose if the logistics are better maybe I should...

  14. 630 is the flight! It was suggested I take the 450 bus to arrive at the airport by 520...so I will probably do that...I don't think a cab is worth $60 when they have such good public transportation...

  15. I will have a 630am departure from Bergen. I see that Hurtigruten offers transfers to the airport. Would they run that early in the morning on an off season cruise? Or would I need a taxi? Thanks...

  16. Finally, rates available for Thon Bristol Bergen. I had to email them several times to explain because it's a leap year, they neglected to program in Feb 29. If I prepay my rate is 896 NOK....about 114 for a single queen room.

  17. From the reviews on trip advisor, other than the clarions, all the hotels sound like they are okay... But not great. Most complaints are they need updating and are noisy. Beginning to this it doesn't make much difference which one you choose. There is a new clarion that sounds really nice, but at 300 a night, it's not worth it to me.

  18. Booked a norwegian coastal cruise on Hurtigruten Midnatsol for Mar 2, 2016! Can't wait. I've been considering this for several years and finally booked! I know it's not like a mainstream cruise but that's what's appeals to me... Standing on the deck, all bundled up looking for the northern lights! How cool is that!!! Plan on spending a few days in Bergen or Oslo prior to my cruise.

  19. I found a rate for February for the Bristol, $318 for a single... But even that didn't sound right, compared to the other Thon hotels... Less than half of that! I'll just wait, no rush. I would really like to stay at the Clarion #13, if I had my choice, but they are just too high.

  20. thanks digitl and sarnia. I like the location of the Thon Bristol better, though my guess is the Radisson is probably more attractive. I cant get any rates for the Bristol for some reason, even though Thon has rates for all their other hotels in Bergen. Could it be closing or being sold off? I have a reservation for the Det Hanseatiske, but its very pricey so I may cancel if I can find something more reasonable. Also Im thinking the Thon and Radisson might be better suited for my age group (60+). I really like the location of Radisson Norge, but the reviews are not very complementary...
