  1. Your description makes it sound way more complicated than it is. It’s an airport tram which has no cost and is a single loop so it’s not like you’re going to get lost. There are easily accessible escalators and elevators. Then one train. Penn Station isn’t the greatest but there are always elevators you just have to maybe look a bit. Depending on where your hotel is, the final step may not even be needed.

A car from Newark is simply easier and can be faster than the train.  A train requires 3 legs and a lot of handling of your luggage:  First you take the Airtrain from your terminal to the Airport train station.  Then a train from there to Penn Station New York.  Up a flight of stairs into the station and then up to street level. Finally a taxi from there to your hotel or the port.  Most have a fair amount of luggage for a cruise so a car is just easier!

Enjoying the start of this report, can't wait to read more!

It actually isn’t that hard. There’s a train station right in Newark which can take you directly to Penn Station NYC. No train change involved. And for a drive that could take 2 hrs if you hit it wrong with traffic-it’s a great 20 minute option.

  3. Recent reviews suggest that NCL had long lines to get a "ticket" to disembark in Key West. Then hour long lines to actually get off the ship with no one looking at the tickets. That is the "horror" I'm referring to.

  4. Perfect! Thank you so much.

I guess the Navy base location is the reason for the horror stories I’ve been reading about disembarking from the Sun? Let’s hope they resolved it this week.

  5. we just booked a Cuba cruise leaving in 5 days. I’m sure my Qs are answered in here somewhere but time is if the essence so please indulge me!

On NCL Sun. We dock at 3pm.

    First, where does NCL dock?

Any good map you can point me to?

We would like to walk around the Old a Town seeing a few sights maybe shopping and a bar. We aren’t interested in a “tour” and we don’t need to see the beaches.

Is the old town walkable from the pier?

Our intent is to just spend 3-4 hours and then eat dinner back on the ship

    Visa

I assume it was part of the taxes/fees we paid for the cruise. Do you mean physically “getting” it? Sometimes it doesn’t work that way- I don’t know if you actually need anything in hand.

    Visa

Great, thanks I see it! Now, if I’m doing a private excursion do I check “Educational exchanges – group people-to-people through Norwegian or other organization” or “

    Support for the Cuban people”

    Visa

Where is the form for this Visa? We just booked for a Cuba cruise departing in 6 days. Just did the check in and I expected to see it there. I’m getting anxious. We plan to use ( and already booked) Old Car Tours independently.

  6. Questioning the reason is fine but once it's stated as "medical emergency", it's done. You no longer have to be concerned about mechanical issues, terrorism, weather, etc. The captain does his job by giving everyone enough detail to squelch any fears. It's the people that keep asking what happened to the person that are nosy and inappropriate.

Anyway, gorgeous day on the seas. We seem to be going a bit faster than typical. But it's very calm and lovely out.

  7. Spent a week at Rose Hill a few years back, different ownership than now.

Guards with guns on the beach, guards to escort you to the fancy restaurant on the golf course. Tours had guards along and locals stopped us entering fruit markets, said we would be robbed. Drug dealers everywhere we went from airport on.

I've been to Jamaica probably 20 times for at least a week each time. The worst we've ever experienced has been being asked if we want to buy some pot. The vendors at the markets especially at Dunns River and the raft markets in Ochi were super-aggressive but in no way threatening. I've seen an occasional cop pull people over and yes they have large guns. And while every resort had security guards (true of any country I've ever stayed at), no one has ever had to accompany us anywhere.

  8. I have to give RCL the upper hand in this area. They have a lot invested in your safety. Both monetary and ethically. They will do what they feel is responsible thing that will provide us with a wonderful and safe vacation. They will probably access this again at a later time and see if the problems have been resolved. Whatever the true concerns are?

I'm sure that has almost nothing to do with safety. And almost everything to do with them not making money off of tours because people don't want to,get off the ship. I like Jamaica but it's a pretty crummy port- too far from everything.

  9. Jamaica is a major international tourist destination. People flock there to the beautiful beaches and resorts.

It seems to be only cruise ship passengers who find it "scary".

    I find that sad.

Agreed. We love Jamaica. However, the pushy, aggressive vendors are a big turn off here
