  1. Tórshavn’s old town, consisting of Reyn and Undir Ryggi, is home to two dozen or so small, black-tarred wooden houses with white-framed windows and grass roofs. People still call these 14th century houses their homes today.
  2. Check out the turf roofs! From wiki : Tinganes is the historic location of the Faroese landsstýri (government), and is a part of Tórshavn. The name means "parliament jetty" or "parliament point" in Faroese. The parliament met there for the first time in the Viking ages when Norwegian colonists placed their Ting (parliament) on the location in 825. It is one of the oldest parliamentary meeting places in the world, along with Tynwald hill on the Isle of Man and Þingvellir in Iceland. The Løgting has since moved to the north of the city, but the home-rule government still sits here. The building on the outermost point on the small peninsula of Skansapakkhusið is currently the government's main building. The small main street on the peninsula is called Gongin and is home to the oldest parts of the city. Many of the houses on Tinganes were built in the 16th and 17th centuries and are still in use today. The peninsula divides the Tórshavn harbour in two parts, Eystaravág and Vesteravág.
  3. Day 4 / 34 Torshavn Good morning and thanks for following. Balcony pics taken around 0710. Screenshots courtesy of the app, Google weather, Marine Traffic. As an aside..... the aircon has gone off in our cabin. Seems when we're stationary it really doesn't work! TORSHAVN - port information.pdf torshavn_map.pdf
  4. I don't know where to start!! Talk about a standing ovation show! 7 principal singers, 4 dancers. An Enchanted Garden. One of the very best shows on the high seas I've seen, if not THE best. Fabulous costumes; perfect vocals. Exceptional staging and choreography. 'Knights in white satin' in Italian. And finished with a perfect Nessun Dorma. West End quality. Can't wait for tomorrow, Bugsy Malone crossed with Chicago apparently. Magnifique!
  5. Lovely Jubbly. 😀 Menu for tonight's formal still not in app. Popped down to the Buckingham where it was posted. Apologies for the quality.
  6. Whilst participating in my 'activity' we navigated the Pentland Firth.
  7. Love the interactive screens around the ship. I owe Ambassador Cruise Line a HUGE apology. There are two towel hooks on the back of the bathroom door!
  8. Have turned up and signed up for a cruise long activity. Received my equipment. Can you guess what it is? 😏 😉
  9. We're heading to Torshavn in the Faroe Islands to dock tomorrow. We've not booked an excursion. From the app : The Faroe Islands are an archipelago between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, approximately halfway between Norway and Iceland, 200 miles north-northwest of Great Britain. Composed of 18 different islands, the Faroes have truly unspoilt nature be it verdant hills and impressive glacial valleys or soaring cliffs and dramatic seascapes. The name Faroes means "island of currents". Streymoy is the largest and most populated island of the archipelago. Torshavn, located on its southeast coast, is the capital and largest city of the Faroe Islands, and is named after the Nordic god ‘Thor’. Torshavn has an area known as Tinganes, home to what were the first parliament buildings on the islands. The first parliament meeting occurred in 825 A.D. during the Viking Age, making it one of the oldest assemblies in the world. Tinganes boasts pretty wooden houses with green turf roofs, the oldest being more than 500 years old. Just think if you stand on some of the rocks out here on this small peninsular you are standing where the Vikings trod a thousand years ago.
