  1. Yesterday we switched our April inside cabin Jewel booking to an inside guarantee to save some cash!

    A few questions....

We were told we could switch to any available cabin in the same category once a room is assigned. We hope this is soon!

It seems like the room can be assigned at any time. Does paying the cruise off in full increase the likelyhood of having a cabin assigned earlier?

Do you typically get the “worst” cabin in the category?

    Any experiences you can share?

    Thanks!!

  2. We were on the Jewel this past March and are booked again for the April 1st sailing from San Juan.

It was our first cruise on RC and we loved the ship. Not too big but very attractive. Loved the glass elevators that faced the sea.

A few quirky things: I couldn't understand the Solarium...having an indoor pool on a ship in the Caribbean.... The retractable roof was never opened (I inquired and was told it was because it was air conditioned!). A nice adult only spot but would have liked to have it open to the air.

The food in the buffet was great for all meals.

  3. We sailed on the Jewel in February and have booked it again for April, 2018.

We thought the ship was beautiful. Lots of glass, including the elevators! We thought the cabins were fine.

The main dining room food we did find subpar. The beef for example seemed like it was microwaved (beige colour..). But we loved the food in the Windjammer in the evenings. We felt it was a best kept secret! For example we had amazing beef brisket and lamb chops cooked on a grill right before you, fresh crepes and fixings for dessert...

We did not want to pay the upgrades for the specialty restaurants which I assume have better food than the MDR.

We had a port intensive cruise so didn't mind not getting dressed up and spending the time in the dining room at night. I know however others really enjoy that aspect of a cruise and looked at us oddly when we said we prefer the buffet at night.

If your teens are looking for lots of on board activities, this may not be the best choice. We didn't see lots of teens, the pool was small (as on all cruise ships), there is a small waterworks for younger kids, a mini golf course and a pool table.

    That is my 2 cents!

  4. Although this isn't exactly what you are asking about, we stayed in inside cabin 3635 (same as 3639) on the Jewel.

It is an inside cabin turned sideways and much more floor space as there is no "hallway", bigger than a standard inside for the same price. A best kept secret I think.

We book inside cabins and this is our favourite. Quiet and a quick flight of stairs when returning from ports (and one of the cheapest on the ship).

    Thought this might help someone!

  5. Great review. We are on the same ship and itinerary in 4 weeks so very interested as this will be our first time on a RC ship.

Was the solarium roof ever open during the cruise?

What were the food options for snacks when coming back from port (I think the Windjammer would have been closed?)?

I notice you have previously been on a Carnival cruise. How generally did the food compare?

Thanks for posting all the pictures. The food looks great despite the sometimes not so great reviews!

  6. Thanks we are interested in Jolly Beach as well.

Could you rent umbrellas as well as chairs?

    Was it crowded?

Was the public beach entrance well marked?

Can you take the bus there? (We enjoy the local bus experience and like saving money too)

We have been to Valley Church the last few times and wouldn't mind trying someplace different.

We took the bus and remember going by the Condos at Jolly Beach but don't know if the bus went close enough to the beach.

Thanks, we like to know what to expect!

  7. What times is the windjammer open?

When we return hungry from a port day (we are on a southern port-intensive itinerary) at about 4pm what food will be available?

This is our first time on a RC ship and I get the feeling that "free" snacks and good between meal food is hard to find.

    Thanks!!

  8. We have done day passes there a few times.

The confirmation you received is enough (and all you will get!). Print it off to bring with you, you won't get past the security station without it.

At the security station, where you are dropped off by the taxi, you will be walked to an office where you will pay the fee and be shown around. We paid cash.

They called a taxi for us once when we were ready to leave, the other times there were taxis waiting outside the entrance to the resort. You could ask the taxi that brought you there to return for you.

Good food, buffet that is not huge but gourmet food, soups, salads, a few entrees and deserts. Nice fresh breads. There is an alacarte restaurant on the beach that we were told we could not use (which was fine with us!).

It is a quiet peaceful place, an older British crowd. Last visit we met a young couple from the ship who thought it was very boring, we enjoyed the tranquility.

    Hope this helps!

  9. We are on that sailing as well!

Look to join our roll call where many have shared great information and port ideas.

As said, the itinery (or a link) will be on your cruise documents and on the RCI website (search for cruise as if you wanted to book)

The list of ports and times listed below in a post is incorrect. The cruise goes to St. Thomas, Antiqua, Barbados, St. Kitts and St. Lucia.

  10. We are looking to buy a day pass to the Melia in a few weeks.

I read on this forum that the price went up to $45??? This seem very expensive for what you get?

Junkanoo beach is our next option but gets bad reviews.

A pass seems to be available online ahead of time for $35 but as it is rainy season (an understatement this week!) we would rather pay when we got there. Has anyone done this?

Also, any recent feedback? Are chairs in the shade hard to get?

    Thanks!
