  1. You guys are probably already aware of it but saw this notice when I went to look up my current booking

Earn Double Club Points if you travel solo in a stateroom (as of July 1, 2014)

I say it's about time, since most of us pay pretty close to double the pp rate, that they finally at least give us this. Thanks Celebrity:D

I totally agree. I have not paid less than 200% when cruising Celebrity. I'm glad for the change.

  2. As I near retirement in 3-5 years, I'm leaning towards itinerary and price. I usually always sailed in balcony cabins but the next two cruises I'm trying new cruise lines. September I'll be on NCL Pride of American in an inside and RCCL in October in an OV.

I've sailed Celebrity enough to become elite and I like the cruise line primarily because of their smoking policy. I have also sailed Carnival and Princess. I'm sure when I retire and can travel last minute I'll try a few more cruise lines.

  3. We have two cabins booked on the freedom. They both have an occupancy for 2. My wife and I are in one cabin, and my father and daughter (age 9) are in the other. What happens if my daughter get scared and wants to sleep in our cabin. Would they allow this?

    Thanks

Yes. Probably won't even notice unless you mention it.

  4. It happened to me with Celebrity. My cabin mates mother took ill and went into the hospital 3 days before the cruise. We had insurance through Travelex I believe. Cabin mate cancelled and I went. It was pass the point that any refund would have been given and I was not charged the single supplement. Insurance refunded my cabin mates money.

In your case I would just show up and if they didn't ask I wouldn't tell. I'm sure you will have a wonderful cruise.

  5.

Was talking the other day to a fellow avid cruiser. The topic was the growing trend to providing passengers who book a suite amenities outside the cabin itself. Collectively we have heard things like Michael's Club admittance, priority everything and more depending on the line.

Seemed to be two positions on the matter:

    1. Passengers who book a suite get nicer accommodations. It should end there and not extend to things like priority theatre seating and the like. Places like Michaels Club should either be open to all, ala Perry Grant piano bar OR reserved for the most frequent sailing passengers. Over time, Elites, etc. return more profit to the cruise line than a first time passenger who happens to have the bucks to pay for a suite. They gamble, drink expensive drinks and take expensive tours ONCE, frequent sailers do it five, ten or twenty times or more. They are the ones who should get the extras.
    2. Passengers who book a suite pay a great deal of money. For that money they should get whatever extras the cruise line can throw their way. The suite experience together with all the ancillary perks helps insure that high roller suite passenger will come back time and time again.

    Where do you stand?

I'm not a suite cruiser and usually travel solo but will probably book a suite once before I retire just for the experience. I don't look at it as the cruise line is giving them anything. One way or the other they are paying for everything they get.

  6. Have you checked your roll call? I was pleasantly surprised how many solos have signed up for the TA I'm on.

Glad to hear so many positive solo experiences on TAs. I just figured a cruise with so many sea days sort of lends itself to being a great cruise for the solo traveler. It's wonderful to see that's the case.

So far there seems to only be 2 of us.

  7. Sure wish I could be another one of the solos on this cruise! But I am considering an eastbound TA on Celebrity in October 2015.

i am thinking about a solo TA for my 60 in oct 2015. i have done 10 solo to the caribbean. still not sure about crossing the pond.

I have the Celebrity Silhouette booked for October 31, 2015. Would be great to have some solo cruisers joining me.

  8. Here's our situation...we booked a cruise since our 8 month old niece went through some wild health issues, but then was given a clean bill of health. Our family decided to celebrate by booking a last minute summer cruise. We thought why wait...you never know what tomorrow could bring. Today we learned that the tumour has grown back very aggressively, against all odds. Even the surgeons cannot believe it. We're not sure of next step yet since two other hospitals have been contacted for consultations.

We are 17 days out from cruising.

I didn't take the insurance when booking (so can't quality for the any reason insurance claim), but called back to add the regular insurance. Now when I called to cancel, I learned two things that cause us to be denied a claim: it was a pre-existing condition that we were aware of. I was told that they look back at health records for 1 year AND since she is our niece and not immediate family, this is not covered.

    So options are:

    1) Cancel before day 14 arrives and lose $1460, but get back $825.

    2) Hope for the best that maybe we can still go, but run the chance of not going and losing all of our money. My sister wants us to go and not change our plans, but you all know that we will obviously not be going if things are not going well.

I asked to Carnival transfer the booking to friends, but at least one original name would have to stay on the booking and that's not really feasible.

I am so torn as to what to do with so many things in the air....what would you do?

Thanks for prayers for our little one. Hoping a skilled doctor has some answers and can fix her!

I am so sorry to hear about your niece.

Did you ask the cruise line if you could change the date of your cruise? About 9 years ago I was scheduled on a Celebrity Cruise and had to have surgery. I called the cruise line and they changed the date of my cruise to 3 months later. I had insurance but would have lost part of my money paid. I think I would have got back 75 or 80%. If you haven't, check with the cruise line and see if you can change your cruise to another date.

    Good luck.

  9. Is a 10:25 am flight too early for a flight from FLL? Ship suppost to arrive Port Everglades at 7am. Domestic flight. Unfortunately, the next non-stop is not until 8:40pm. It is really a long day if we have to wait until then.

When I fly out of FLL I usually take a 10:50 a.m. flight. It's about a 10 minute taxi ride from port to airport. You should be fine BUT be aware that stuff does happen.

    Enjoy your cruise.

  10. Hi everyone,

I'm Paula, a seasoned solo business and personal traveler, yet never considered going on a cruise alone - even though I love cruising!

2 years ago went for a cruise with a friend and on my birthday she got sick...and then was sick for the next few days, so I spent a lot of time on my own.

This year, I need a vaca and she can't go, so I figured, why not just go by myself. I'm so excited to see so many other people who love solo cruising!

    Hello duhwitt,

Welcome to the solo forum. I'm sure you'll enjoy your solo cruise. Just smile and be friendly if you want to meet people. Join your roll call.:D

  11. Thanks, Lois, but as I mentioned above, there is little interest in this excursion on my roll call.

I think I would try the roll call again. Maybe there is another solo cruiser or couple that joined recently. Also, a lurker may be out there. If not, I would wait until I get on the ship and possibly someone at your dinner table may like to join you.

I'm not sure I'd feel safe alone in a taxi for 5 hours. JMHO.

    Enjoy your cruise.

  12. I haven't even been on my 1st cruise, but I am anticipating wanting more! I live just outside San Antonio and thinking about the TX ports so I don't have to fly.

I do not want to sail on the largest ship, the thought of unlimited hours to just relax is more intriguing that bar hopping or partying. I'm looking at fall/winter/early spring cruises and planning to miss the weeks that school is out! a shorter cruise 4-5 days might be enough to see how I like hte solo part, but I can't imagine not liking it. My favorite land vacations have been a few days on an ocean view balcony watching the moon on the ocean. Alone.

How do I even start? I'm going on a HAL Alaska cruise in July -can't believe I was talked into it by the person I'm going with - co-worker/church friend and it was kind of spur of the moment. I've learned more since we booked than I even imagined before!

I would appreciate opinions about the 4 cruise lines that sail from there - not leaning toward Carnival because it presents as being big party time. The others I haven't read enough about to have an opinion.

Primarily - I need to know which have the highest/lowest single supplements; and then which ones are more attractive to the early 50 single woman as far as safety, lack of matchmaking, and ability to be alone or participate.

That's lot of stuff!!! so anyone who wants to chip in info - I very much appreciate it!

    Debby

Hi Debby. The only 4 or 5 day cruise would be on Carnival and Carnival will probably have the lowest solo rate.

I will be traveling October 26 on RCL out of Galveston. I haven't been on NOS before but it was refurbished last year. I'm paying double.

  13. My first cruise in 1990 was an inside with 3 other people. I have since cruised OV, balcony, AQ & cc. My next 3 cruises I have booked are all insides. I plan to retire in the next few years and since I usually cruise solo, I'm learning to just get on the ship. I hope to upgrade if the price is right but will be happy with the insides.

  14. Any thoughts on this as a solo cruiser? I've always wanted to do one, but now I'm thinking it may be a waste of time, and boring... With a minimum of 4 consecutive days at sea and then some... I'm retired, so relaxation is not an issue anymore. But I thought I might just like the experience, kind of a bucket list thing. I'd like to hear from others who've taken a transatlantic. My vacation funds are limited to one or two trips a year, so I choose my trips carefully...

I did my first TA April 2013. I am booked on the Silhouette for the October 31, 2015 TA west bound. I loved the crossing. There were solos on the April 2013 cruise. So far there is 1 other solo on the roll call for October. I wish I could do a B2B but I'm still working. If you decide to join us in October that would be great.

  15. I retired when I was 47, we were lucky!:D

We've always been frugal except for travel, which is our 1 fun expense!

Now about those who say they'll wait, they love their job, etc., listen to these facts,,you have a 50/50 chance of being dead/alive at 65! And every year after that, the % grows that you'll be dead!

Enjoy life the best while you can, and as soon as you can!

    The best to all!:)

    I wish I had a like button.

  16. what is a good singles cruise to go on and either a western or eastern caribbean

Hi David. Why don't you come over to the solo board if you just want to travel in your own cabin. There is a thread on the solo board where people list cruises with reduced or zero supplements. I hope this helps.
