  1. I officially retired Jan. 2013 my last day was Oct. 31, 2012. We sold everything home, cars, etc. We started traveling on Oct. 31, 2012 then we left the U.S. on Jan. 3, 2013 1st cruise ever, Still going and enjoying traveling and being homeless!

As long as our health & money hold out we will continue! :)

I was on a TA last April and met a couple who did the same thing. Last time we communicated they were in Spain. Enjoy your life. I hope to join the growing number of wondering seniors soon.

  2. Hi' date=' All

This will not only be my first solo cruise, but also my first cruise ever! AND my first time to Alaska.

I could really use some advice, hints, and recommendations.

I'd also love to know if anyone else from here will be aboard.[/quote']

Hello and welcome to the world of cruising. Try joining your roll call; you should be able to meet some nice folks there on your sailing.

  3. I'm not a smoker and don't know the rules but there was a man smoking an e-cig on the Constellation a few weeks ago. I over heard the waiter ask him if it was an e-cig and he said yes. He wasn't asked to turn it off or whatever you do with it. He was still smoking it when I left. I was in the buffet area.

  4. The OP reported that there will now be 2 cabins. I think they leave on Saturday. One for himself, and one for the Aunt since prices went down. ;) He is also paying for half of the 3rd stateroom for his ex.

I would also like to know how the dates were changed for the other cabin.

TomBeckCruise have a good point. Bob should invite two more. The staterooms are paid for. The guest can foot their own bills.

All Celebrity told Bob was anyone with the number and legal names could change the reservation. The changer paid $100 and that's all he knows. I would suspect it has something to do with the fact the X works customer service for one of the big airlines and knows all the tricks. But that is only my opinion.

  5. It seems to me like many of you are wasting your time trying to figure out and/or resolve what is most likely a totally made up story. Have fun with it.

    Caladezi,

I've heard it said fact is stranger than fiction, although I don't see this as being out there. Just maybe some of us AARP card carriers may not remember being young and in one of those "L" words. If you choose to believe the story is made up then so be it. I'm certainly not interested in changing your mind.

    Have a wonderful day.

  6. Hi Ted!

I was wondering you have had a chance to write your review of POA. I haven't been on here as often between work and gearing up for nursing school, so I wasn't sure if I missed your review. I am looking forward to reading it!

    Thanks!

I'm also looking forward to this review.

  7. Thank you for the follow-up. The situation is unusual and it does seem strange to me that Celebrity would not only move passengers around, but move two people from different cabins to a totally different cruise without everyon's approval.

It makes me wonder if both Bob and his aunt now have to pay a single supplement and whether his companion and her sister had to pay anything to move.

No where did you actual say or imply that Bob actually paid for all four passengers, but I think some people are making that assumption. If that is true then Celebrity's policy is even more bizzare IMO.

Of course I am not sure what is more strange what we understand Celebrity did or that we believe that they actual did it.

I called to ask about payment. Bob said he paid for himself and the now X. His aunt and the other lady paid their own.

  8. This is the situation. Bob made a reservation with a traveling companion. He also made a reservation for his aunt who was to share a cabin with Bob's traveling companion's sister. The ship leaves on Saturday and today Bob's traveling companion called Celebrity and changed the reservation. Bob is now in an OV cabin with his aunt. He had upgraded earlier this week to a C3 cabin. The traveling companion and her sister will now be in a C3 cabin sailing in April. After several hours of holding the phone with Celebrity all they would do was give him and his aunt the C3 he had booked. Nobody has insurance and it is well beyond final payment and the point where any money is refundable.

My question: Should the travel companion have been allowed to change the reservation? Who owns the reservation?

I told Bob to call the resolutions department in the morning. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

BTW this will be there first and possibly last Celebrity Cruise.

  9. It's sounds as if you've got a great plan! And it's wonderful that you're happy in your line of work - that's so important. I feel so fortunate that I've had such a great job all these years, but I'm just tired now. I've had to work shifts (including overnights) and it's been difficult to have a social life. I just feel it's time for me to live a little ;) I plan to continue working part time, but not right away.

That's part of my problem. I have worked rotating shifts for 25 years. If in 3 years I feel as I do now, I will get a part time job after about a year or so.

  10. Man! I wish I were as close to retirement as some of you. First eligibility is 3-4 years away, but I don't know if I will actually make the jump at that time or continue working for a year or two or three thereafter. But I do already browse longer cruise itineraries, dreaming about the day I can take off for several weeks or a month at a time, without concern for what emergencies I will have to address at the office when I return.

I haven't decided what will be my celebration cruise, but I keep telling my husband it better be something big!

P.S. Sorry to be part of the conversation on the Solo Forum since I'm not, but I am fully prepared to cruise solo if my husband refuses to cruise.

Thanks for joining in. If your husband decides not to cruise I'm sure you'll enjoy solo cruising.

  11. For years I've been reading world cruise and exotic cruise blogs. In 2-3 years I'm hoping to do a longer/exotic to me cruise for about 30 days as a retirement gift to myself.

Each month I come up with another idea. I've thought about an Around OZ cruise offered by HAL and Princess and the Voyage of the Vikings cruise that HAL does each summer. I've also thought about doing a combo Europe + TA cruise or a longish river cruise--years ago I did a Russia river cruise which was wonderful.

Would love to hear from solo cruise critic folks about your favorite cruises. Faith

I did my first transatlantic in April. Would have loved to do the next leg from Rome but didn't have enough time off. It's on my bucket list. Also, I say a cruise on SIlverseas leaving Barcelona and ending in Ghana in 2015. If I can get off work during that time I would like to do that cruise. Then take a land trip while in Ghana. I'm sure whatever you decide will be enjoyable.

  12. I just got home from a wonderful week in studio #13003 on the POA.trying to collect my thoughts, and freestyle dailys to write a review and comparison of the studios on the epic and poa.if anyone has any questions or comments feel free to ask.

I'm looking forward to your review of the studio and the cruise. Would like to here your thoughts and see any photos.

    Thanks

  13. I have 28 months to go! I'm planning a transatlantic cruise to celebrate.

I did my first transatlantic in April 2013 and liked it a lot. I would like to do the west bound but it's hard to get off work that time of year. So I'll just add it to my bucket list.

  14. I was cruising on the 55+ board and that started me wondering how many of the solo cruisers are retired or soon to be retired? I have about 38 more months to go. I think. After that I'm seriously considering moving to south Florida. I'm in southeast Texas now.

    Anybody want to share?

  15. I'm going to have problems getting any deals at the moment. I am having disputes in the office about when I can take leave.

I may well take both of my pensions next year and find some part-time or contract work. I may then be able to take cruises when I want them!

Since I've gotten older, I have been seriously thinking the same thing. This job is interferring with my life but I'm trying to work another 3 or 4. Age does have a few perks. If you can retire and be comfortable, that's one.

  16. Going on Celebrity Constellation in February with some co-workers. Have the same ship booked for next December but will probably cancel. In September I have one of the single cabins on Pride of America booked but I'll be traveling with family and friends.

I want to do a spring Transatlantic but hoping the prices go down. I did one in April and loved it. If the transatlantic doesn't come through I'll do the Carnival Magic in October.
