I'm not sure where your flight to Barcelona originates, but if it's in the US I would be too tired from the time zone change to enjoy a tour as soon as I got off the airplane.  I'm also not a fan of flying in the same day as the cruise, especially a transcontinental flight, but that's a topic for another thread.

Thank you so much for your replies!! We are coming in the day before and have an 8 hour tour with Barcelona Day tours. So hoping and praying we can sleep on the plane. Don't know when we would be able to come back to Barcelona, so trying to pack as much as we can into the time we have. The next day we have earlier entrance into Sagrada Familia, so looking for for someone to take us to the church, come back to the hotel get our luggage and take us to the port. Welcome pick-up said they would do this for 195 euros. Which is a lot, but trying to make it as easy as possible at our age. So I just wanted to know if any fellow cruisers has used them before, and if they were pleased.

  2. you need to provide the link or more information if you want feedback.

Is it a flight to Prudhoe ? a van tour to the Arctic Circle sign ? a fly/drive?

    One of these?

The trip is with Viator, and is $200. It includes snacks along the way and lunch when you get there provided by the guide, beef stew. They pick you up at the hotel and have you back in 12 hours.

  3. Our plane doesn't leave Fairbanks until 1:30 in the morning June 15. So we have an entire day to send, will need to check out of hotel the day before June 14. So was wondering has anyone done this trip and is it worth the time and money. We have the whole day and trying to find something to keep us busy without going from place to place. So grateful for any help.

  4. Hello group,

DW and I will be on Insignia during the July 1-15 sailing from Miami to New York. In 50-plus cruises, this will be the smallest ship we'll ever have been on, a mere 30,000 tons. That's vanishingly tiny compared to some of the seagoing monsters plying the waves these days. I understand that the bigger the ship, the better it smooths out rough water, but other than this factor we have little use for a seagoing apartment block awash with screaming children. But I digress.

My question is, how does Insignia handle less-than-perfect sea conditions? We have been in some fine storms at sea but have never been seasick. Still, because Insignia is so small, the question arises: How does she behave in moderately rough water? Perhaps some of you who've sailed on Insignia can give me some insight.

    Thanx,

    KK

I too have been wondering about rough seas on the Insignia. We will be on her August 24, and it is the smallest ship we have ever been on. Have any of you been on her from Halifax to Bermuda and back to New York?

Thank you for any advice, Carlotta

  5. I’m on it! Stay tuned for as many answers and I can get for you! I have been wondering about the pool, myself. This will be our first cool weather cruise. [emoji848]

Good Morning All, These are great questions, thank you for being willing to get answers. I did call Holland America about the flat screen TV when the dry dock was postponed. They assured me that all cabins now have new flat screen TV. Hoping!!!!

Have a wonderful cruise making great memories, Carlotta

  6. There will be formal photo options (for a fee) throughout the ship on gala night because that is often when people want a special photo taken when they are dressed more formally. Plus there has been a "chocolate parade" on at least one of the gala nights, when the dining staff goes through the public areas after dinner with trays of various chocolate goodies.

There have been captain's toasts in the show room - large crowd and a glass of sparkling welcome cheer - but not sure now if they are on gala night or just any other night. I thought they were gala nights in the past. Been on too many shiips now over 10 years to keep all of this straight. There is always the possibility you will get invited to sit at the captain's table on gala night, so nice to have something special for that occasion. Who gets invited is anyone's guess, but it happened to us last cruise and I was glad I had my long gown with me.

Hard to know how many will dress more formally since we were discouraged by comments here not to bother on a 10 day Caribbean on the Neiuw Amsterdam, yet I had not seen that many black tie and long gowns out on that cruise in a long time. I now keep a mix of longer and shorter dresses just to feel the mood now.

Will DH take his tuxedo on a 14 day Alaska, probably? Mainly because it is either that or a black suit for him so why not go formal anyway. We enjoy dressing up even if it is just the two of us, but it never has been that few. There are still a lot who sail HAL who like dressing up on gala night.

We too are ones that like to dress up for Gala Nights !!! It just makes it feel more special.

  7. Hi, all. I am the OP. Just wanted to update all who took time to reply. We did book Noordam and are four weeks out to sail away. I will post regarding ship conditions when we return.

We too would love to hear about the ship, entertainment, actually anything you would like to share about your trip. We leave on the June 3rd.

Thank you, and I hope you have a wonderful time!!!! Carlotta

  8. Noordam had her last dry-dock in the spring of 2015 at Freeport between 10-19 APR 2015. If you look at the HAL site, she shows two deck plans; one prior to 20 May 2018 and one after, which would fit the timing for her next dry-dock. Interestingly enough, the HAL site does not show any gaps in her schedule during May 2018. The 'after 20 May' deck plan does show her with the“Music Walk” concept, “Billboard Onboard,” and theGallery (Arts) Bar instead of the Northern Lights nightclub, so the jury is still out how/where that will be accomplished :)

Second interesting part of that is that on 20 May 2018 she'll be in the Pacific Northwest during the early part of next year's Alaska season. Options for a dry-dock there are either in Esquimalt, BC (Victoria shipyards) or in Vancouver, BC (Vancouver shipyards). The last time a HAL ship was in Esquimalt was in 2011 and in Vancouver even longer, a wet dock for Statendam in 2004.

As a side note, she's the only Vista with her Explorations Cafe still on Deck 3 and an Oak Room inside the Crow's Nest

Thank you Copper 10-8, We will be on the Noordam on June 3, 2018. Was hoping that it would she would be in dry-dock before we get on.

  9. We did the 6 night extension followed by the cruise from Seward to Vancouver on HAL. The land portion with HAL was fantastic... saw the pipe line; panned for gold (very touristy but fun); did a cruise on the Chena River with a stop at an Athabascan Village; an all day tour and o'nite at Denali; took the McKinley Explorer train from Denali to Anchorage; visited a Native People's Heritage center in Anchorage; stopped at Turnagain Arm and Portage Glacier; hiked to Exit Glacier in Seward and took a half-day boat trip on Kenai Fjord where I actually got a picture of a glacier calving! But then we boarded the Staatendam (it's last season apparently) and while everything OFF the ship was wonderful...what was ON the ship was disappointing.

Hydrokitty, What was so disappointing on the ship, and which ship was it ????? Thank you for your ideas for tours. Carlotta

  10. We've done the land/sea package to Alaska twice with Celebrity. We enjoyed the land package because we did not have to think about renting a car. Both times they were well run with excellent tour guides and drivers. The only negative we had was the hotel in Denali the 1st time we did it. It was at the end of the season, a lot of the staff had already left and the hotel left a lot to be desired. The 2nd time in July the Denali hotel was much better.

Many thanks for your reply, still trying to decide between Celebrity and Holland. Carlotta

  11. Are you starting in Vancouver or Anchorage? We have done the Yukon tours from Anchorage, train to Denali, bus to Fairbanks, plane to Dawson City, bus to Whitehorse, bus and White Pass railroad to Skagway for overnight, join the ship for a four day cruise to Vancouver (Y2L). I do recommend this tour. We have done it three times. With 15 days you will have time in each location to actually enjoy your surroundings. We did 20 day Yukon tour (Y1) this year but wouldn't do it again. I really prefer the shorter cruise with at least two nights in each location). If you have lots of time you could cruise from Vancouver three days north, join the ship in Skagway, do the tour and sail for 7 days from Seward back to Vancouver. You will really appreciate the ship to rest for four days after your adventure...and you will have friends from your tour onboard.

Dear Oaktreeb, We start in Anchorage, and end in Vancouver. Happy to know that you recommend this tour. We have cruised Alaska twice but have never taken a land tour. I was just trying to find out as much as possible before I booked the tour. Many thanks, Carlotta

  12. We too have taken this itinerary with Holland America, and enjoyed every moment !!!! I am sure you will enjoy the many ports. We went in June and I was surprised how cold it was in Quebec. My husband ended up buying me a beautiful coat. I was thankful for the cold, because I am still enjoying that coat and it rings back many memories. I hope you enjoy your cruise !!!!

  13. Thank you so much for all of your comments, I realize there is no way to predict the weather, just wondering if you enjoyed just the relaxing days at sea. We did book the Koningsdam for October 3rd leaving from Rome. I think we are excited to just relax and enjoy being pampered. Holland America does it so well. In February we were in Israel for 10 days never stopping, so much to see. So relaxing sounds good this time. Again, thank you for your replies!!!!
