  1. The water is warm, not too clear as a snorkeling port. If you want to "see" Mexico, I would walk over to the mercado (15 minutes or so)and wander through it. Safe to eat at any of the fondas. Also, I think you arrive at 7 so try to be first off. As you leave the pier a short block to the right, is the fish market. The fishermen have the fish they caught in the night right on the sand, housewives, restaurant owners doing their daily shopping....it's over around 8:30 or so.....have coffee and/or breakfast right there under the umbrellas...Spend the day as a beach day on Playa La Ropa at Paty's, (good food, clean bathrooms) a 40 peso taxi ride, (if you don't have pesos US 4 bucks will do it) all taxi drivers know it. Paty's does not take charge cards but does take US dollars....

Great advice from lardor. Just relax and enjoy beautiful Zihuatanejo. My favorite port in Mexico!

  2. Then again, I'm from the Seattle area, so any time it doesn't rain all week is decent weather as far as I'm concerned. :D

    Sherry,

I'm down here near Longview,WA. It's easy to get moss growing on your body in this part of Washington:eek: As you know....winter can be be long, wet and depressingicon9.gif

  3. I think NCL has much better breakfast and especially lunch buffets but food on Carnival is better at night. I remember the good old days of big lobsters, thick steaks and great desserts before the pay for restaurants arrived to spoil things. I digress. Entertainment I find good on both lines generally. Personally, I hate Second City. I think their humor is sophomorish.

I 100% agree with the above....!!!

  4. Thanks for the comparison

Original Carnival Platinum(the hard way) and soon to be NCL Platinum(the easy way)

Carnival pricing is the same as NCL

if you want a mid ship cabin what ever cat it is will be cheaper fore and aft a deck lower

    Carnival better MDR food

    NCL better buffet food

    Ncl better 24hr food

    Carnival steakhouse better

    Carnival Larger cabins

    Ncl better customer service

    NCL better loyalty perks

Carnival best cruiseship layout is Spirit class

Doc.. last month I tried NCL Pearl 10 day to Alaska. As a long time Carnival cruiser...I agree with every point you made. Scary...like you were reading my mind!!icon10.gif

  5. When I was in Sitka last month. free buses picked us up at the pier and took us into town. Picked us up at drop off point. Its about a 15 minute ride into town.

  6. Ketchicandy is always a MUST stop for us. If you love chocolate..this is the place. We always get chocolate covered cherries and the milk chocolate mint patties. The patties will literally....melt in your mouth!!

  7. When do you see them in the streams around Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan?

Been to Ketchikan twice in mid September. Ketchikan Creek was LOADED with salmon!!icon10.gif

  8. Tram tickets are always available at the tram, so I'd highly recommend NOT buying your tram tickets from the ship so you can make a game-time decision based on weather. That said, if the weather is nice, take the tram.

We said "great idea, BUT since the weather is nice today here in Juneau, take the tram NOW in case you have bad weather next week".[

I've been to Alaska 3 times. Still waiting for good "tram" weather in Juneau. Gonna give it another try next May!

  9. Can we do all three of those in one day while on a celebrity century stop? Which order should we do them?

    Thanks!

    Adam

I would do it in this order...if you've got a rare, blue sky day. 1. Tram... 2. Mendenhall...3 Brewery.

If the weather is bad...with low clouds....I would skip the tram and head out to Mendenhall. Take the walk to Nugget Falls...and then on the way back to town... have a cool drink or two at the brewery!icon12.gif

  10. I was just pricing Alaska cruises on NCL this morning. I am looking forward to your review.

What month you looking at? I just returned from 10 day Pearl on 5/18. Wish I was still on board. I talked to other cruisers on the Pearl...who have gotten some great deals for the 10 day cruises in May.

I'm retired...so much more flexible. I paid $2269 total for wife and I... for my recent 10 day. Purchased this past March. I had a choice of ....If I recall correctly...23 balcony cabins on decks 9 & 10.

We are going on the 10 day Pearl or Sun next May. I'll watch prices daily..starting in Feb. 2015.

Hope you get a price you like and have a great cruise!

  11. Anyone who has cruised to Alaska this year? How did it go?

Went on 10 day to Glacier Bay on NCL Pearl 5/8-5/18. Wonderful cruise, nice weather! 3rd cruise to Alaska..1st on NCL. Loved the itinerary..started in Vancouver..ended in Seattle. Already making plans for 10day next May on either NCL Pearl or Sun.

  12. Then we sailed to get a close up view of Lamplugh Glacier.

We had several other whale sightings in the park. Unfortunately I didn’t witness any that were breaching in the park but here a couple more shots of near the surface whales.

Also saw seals, porpoises, sea otters (so cute!), and a variety of birds. This was one of the most memorable days of my life. I was in awe to be at such a vast, spectacular location where everything is so wild and largely unspoiled by human activity. Many unnamed islands and unnamed glaciers throughout the park. A truly unforgettable day!

    Goodbye Glacier Bay

When we were on the Pearl 2 weeks ago we couldn't get close to Lamplugh Glacier...way too many icebergs in our path. Glad you had a wonderful day in Glacier Bay!

  13. For those interested in Mazatlan, Carnival just announced they would be visiting the port 52 times this coming season. Along with the those previously announced, there will now be 110 visits.

I have some friends in Mazatlan that work in tourist related jobs. It's been a tough go for them in recent years. Happy for them.. and Mazatlan.

I've been visiting Mazatlan since 1984. Love IT!!

  14. If we go in September will we see snow on the mountain tops?

Depends on the summer...but we've cruised twice in September..to Glacier Bay and yes there will be snow on most mountain tops. Just not quite as dramatic as in.. ..May. We just returned form a 10 day Glacier Bay cruise(departed on 5/8) and virtually all tours were available. You can't go wrong choosing either month!
