  1. This is only true for paper tickets on regional trains. Electronic tickets for regional trains must be validated on line. Tickets for seat assigned trains (Frecce or Intercity trains), regardless if they are electronic or paper, also don't need to be validated.
  2. It depends on where you are flying to. If it is a direct flight to the States or to Israel, the recommendation is three hours prior. If you will be flying to another country within the Schengen zone, or have a connecting flight that stops within the zone, then two hours prior is the recommendation.
  3. I have a completely opposite strategy upon disembarking vs. a port day. For a port day I want to be one of the first off the ship and on my way into town. For disembarking, on the other hand, I stay on the ship much longer hoping to avoid the commuters. I'm also willing to wait longer and spend more for a Frecce train upon disembarking, in order to have a guaranteed seat and more room for my luggage.
  4. Actually, there is a sort of discount store I've used for years not far from your hotel, in the Jewish Ghetto. It doesn't have a name as far as I know, I even checked a receipt once and it didn't have a name. It's located on Via Portico d'Ottavia at the corner of Via della Reginella. According to google maps it's 400 meters/two-tenths of a mile on foot from your hotel. The only way I can describe it is kind of like a Walgreens/CVS/RiteAid but without the pharmacy. There's a lot of health and beauty products, plus a variety of household items. Look for the yellow security gates at the top of the windows and doors, that's the place.
  5. You can book all trains in advance but be aware that tickets purchased on line for regional trains must now be validated on line, which will require a connection while in Italy. If you won't have that access you won't be able to use the ticket. If this is a port day trip you might consider using the BIRG ticket, which can only be purchased on site. The newsstand in the train station sells them, 12 euro gets you round trip regional train fare as well as unlimited use of the the buses, metro and trams in Rome for the day.
  6. Also keep in mind that the Frecce trains make no stops between Rome and Civitavecchia, so there's no opportunity for someone to get off with your things. The regionale trains, on the other hand, make up to ten stops en route. You should never walk away from your luggage on a regionale train.
  7. You know that you'll need a cellular or wifi connection in order to validate the regional train ticket purchased on line, right?
  8. Yes, all seats on the Frecce trains are seat assigned so they only sell as many tickets as they have seats. Maybe you couldn't choose the seats due to the Me & You promotion?
  9. Also note that you chose Civitavecchia Porto, which means they will add 6 euro onto each ticket for the bus to the port. Just wanted to make sure you were aware of that.
  10. Okay, I just tried it again selecting first class, which right now is the same price as 2nd (9,90 euro), it also went through without a problem. Maybe try a different browser?
  11. I just went through it without a problem. When I clicked on the time from the results menu it had preselected super economy so I didn't do anything with that and simply clicked on continue. It went right to the passenger page. The class bit is up to you, but I really can't see the point. It's a really short ride on a nice train with assigned seats in every class.
  12. I don't know what caused the error, but once you've selected a ticket price, go to the bottom right and click on "continue" to get to the next step in the payment process.
  13. Also through a partner, Trenitalia offers a porter service in a few stations, Rome Termini and Venice Santa Lucia are fortunately on the list. This service also must be reserved in advance, something your hotel can do for you. The employees wear uniforms so there's no chance of being confused about who is authorized and who is not. Again, only in Italian: servizio portabagagli - Trenitalia
  14. There are options to make it easier. For example, Trenitalia has a cooperation agreement with a company called Zyppy to provide a baggage transfer service. They come and collect your bags at your hotel in Rome, then deliver them to your hotel in Venice. You just keep a small carry on with your critical items (medications, jewelry, electronics, etc.) I'm not certain if it arrives the same day or the next day, if the latter obviously you'd need to take overnight things as well. This service needs to be reserved a couple of days in advance, which is something the front desk or concierge at your Rome hotel could do for you. More info here, in Italian only, but google translate will make it clear: Bagaglio facile - Trenitalia
  15. Assuming this is the place: Home - Ristorante Le Bontà del Capo (lebontadelcapo.it) It's in Conca dei Marini, about eleven miles further east from Positano. From the marina in Sorrento this is about 21 miles, which doesn't sound like much but will take at least an hour and a quarter by car from Sorrento. A car service is really your only option, there are no ferries near here and even the Sita bus would still require a significant, steeply uphill (including stairs) walk from the bus stop.
  16. The nicest part of an overnight stay is not needing to rush back to the ship in the middle of the afternoon. Even if you want to return to the ship for dinner, you could still have pre-dinner drinks at Positano, enjoying the sunset. (Well, to be honest Positano is facing the wrong way for a sunset, but you'll still have the lessening of the light.) The ferries along the coast run through the end of October, weather permitting. Schedule here: Orari traghetti Travelmar - Traghetti veloci in Costiera Amalfitana Be sure to check this schedule again just before your trip to see if they have reduced the late day ferries. They do not run after dark.
  17. The rules for driving do not apply to professional drivers (car services or taxis) so that won't be an issue for them. As for how close they can get to the restaurant, it depends on the location. If the OP posts the name/address of the restaurant we can answer that.
  18. Well, you will be tendered into the same port that the ferry leaves from, so that part would be easy. At the other end, however, in Positano, unless your restaurant is near the waterfront you'd have a hike uphill. Here is a list of car services you can reach out to for quotes. A taxi will be far more expensive than a car service. http://www.transferelax.com/our-services.html http://sorrentocars.com/ https://www.guemartravel.com/ Sorrento Silver Star - Car Service - Private Driver - Amalfi Coast Tour
  19. When is this visit? And what are the hours of the visit? If the timing aligns it would be a lot less expensive and probably faster to take the ferry.
  20. You simply purchase a ticket to Civitavecchia. The change is not at Termini, generally the change will be at Roma Trastevere. It would be a huge waste of time to go all the way to Termini only to turn around and come back out.
  21. Lew, if you'd be willing I think it would be a big help to start a new thread and give a tutorial, or sorts, and answer questions about eSIMs. With the upcoming change for regional train tickets purchased on line requiring connection in order to be validated, this will be an ongoing and growing issue for travelers.
  22. Yes, you can buy your ticket at the airport train station, there are multi-language touch screen machines as well as a ticket office. The FCO ticket office is open every day from 6:45 to 21:32 (9:32 PM, an oddly precise time). Servizi in stazione Lazio - Trenitalia
  23. You could also take the train from Venice to Ravenna, then a taxi or shuttle bus from the train station to the port (about 12 km/8 miles). Yet another example of the misleading advertising in the cruise industry. Those of us who have been doing this for a while know to look up where the actual ports are, folks new to cruising don't necessarily know to do this. Some are more obvious than others (just find Florence on a map and you'd know the port is not close), other like Venice are not so obvious.
  24. More info on Caserta: Home - Reggia di Caserta (cultura.gov.it)
