  1. DO NOT USE PATCH!! Tried it once, and way too many side effects, mostly visual problems, but also others. Do a search here...many threads.

We found the best to be generic Bonine (given out at guest services)..non drowsy and we do drink while using them--never had a problem even during rough seas

But....we have never sailed on the Epic

    Safe sailing

I will second this post. I almost became blind from the patch and have to wear glasses ever since using the patch. Try Bonine.....it works great.

  2. Several years ago our friend bought red gel-clings at Halloween and put them on our door (I think they were bloody hands). When we took them off (days before the end of the cruise), there were red marks left on the door. We could not get the red off - but when we showed the room steward and apologized, he told us not to worry. When we came back to the room after dinner, the door was as clean as it was before we decorated it. I have no idea what he used to get the red off, but what ever he did worked great. We apologized because we had no idea that would happen - and of course - tipped him extra for getting the door clean. We learned our lesson - and at least our story had a happy ending!

BTW - we still decorate our door and we have ALWAYS made sure everything is off the door and is very clean before we get off the ship.

  3. Hi,

We are considering a Caribbean sailing on the Wind Surf in January 2015. The things that attract us to Windstar is that it is smaller and goes to ports that the large cruise ships cannot go. When we cruise, we rarely participate in the activities. We mainly cruise for relaxation.

With this said, I have a few questions that I hope someone can help me with:

1 - right now I see promos for 2-for-1 pricing that expire December 31. Is this a marketing trick or will prices truly rise after the 31st?

2 - considering the Wind Surf only has 310 passengers, do the sailings fill up fast?

3 - we typically book suites on the large ships mainly to have the ship within the ship feel. Considering the fewer number of people on the Wind Surf, I am wondering if we need to book a suite. Does anyone know the added amenities a suite has? So far it seems it is just size. With 310 passengers, I don't need to be concerned with priority boarding, etc.

    Thanks!

Thanks for asking about the pricing. We are just starting to look at Windstar and I wondered the same thing. Maybe we will see you in January 2015!

  4. I am looking at Windstar for next year, but I have a question. I tried to read threads but never found this mentioned.

Do they really sail the ships without the engines ever or do they always keep the engines on? The thought of being under sail sounds heavenly to me.

I can hardly wait to book!

  5. We never buy bottled water. What a waste of money. Thanks, I'll spend the money for a cruise!

I have to laugh at people who rant and rave about the price of a gallon of gas but will pay WAY more for a gallon of water (adding the price of each bottle) when they can get it for free or almost free if at home.

To each his own, but I just don't get this "fad" that has lasted for years now.

  6. OMG.....we sailed on the Starward 3 times - in the 70's and 80's. We loved that ship, along with the Skyward. We are now getting ready to go on the Star for the first time and are wondering how different the "new" NCL ship will be compared to the Star. No comparison, I know...as all ships have transformed.

    Thanks for the memories!

  7. Vegas,

Thanks for taking the time to go through the review. I'm sorry you had such tough weather on your trip. We had weather like that while we were in Seward, but otherwise we fared pretty well. I know you said it would be your only trip to Alaska, but maybe you'll decide to give it another shot!

Seward is the one place that had fantastic weather while we were there. In fact, all the locals in Seward kept remarking that they see sun about 3 days a year and we got 1 of them! So we did get to see Seward at a nice, leisurely pace and enjoy it.

  8. Your pictures and diary are wonderful. I have to say, I am a little jealous (OK...a LOT jealous). We took an Alaskan cruisetour last June and went to the same ports, so I "recognize" most of your pictures. However, when we were there, it was about 45-49* and raining the WHOLE TIME! Every where we went, the locals kept saying "welcome to Junuary" because it was so miserable. We looked at as much as we possibly could because we knew we would never go back - but we missed the "beauty" of everything. Your pictures are absolutely gorgeous and makes me realize how much we really missed.

  9. I forgot all about the "nightie" part. It creeped me out too --- so I always hid my nightie, but our friends thought it was cool so every night hers was made into something different and hung in different places in the cabin!

Also -- as far as the price goes - although we pay almost the same now (sometimes), don't forget --- 30 years ago, the price usually included air fare and a hotel room for either the night before or early in the AM if you got to the port city before 8AM. We were also transported from the airport to the hotel / to the ship as part of the price!

  10. Wow!! You made me go get my photo album (remember when we used to take pictures and put them in an album instead of on the computer??):D

She was the first Carnival cruise we ever took and it was in 1987. Our friends got a balcony room --- I think there were only about 10 balcony rooms on the ship (maybe less) and we thought they were really lucky to have such a room.

I found a flimsy pink "Sail & Sign" card that has our card number and voyage number pre-printed on it. Then we had to write our name on one line and sign it on another line.

I also found a green "Boarding Pass" that was a carbon copy of all our handwritten information.

One more document...a "Dining Room Reservation" card that had our Table No. handwritten on it with our dining room times on it. It also has a full rendering of the Riviera Restaurant (MDR) with every table on it with numbers to show you where your table is!

I also remember that you had to pay cash for everything on board. It was such a pain to have to take $ with you to the pool and the store. You also had to carry around a real key .... no such thing as the electronic doors they have today.

Oh boy.............now I feel really old....better get back to my bingo game!

  11. When we first started cruising in the 70's, I don't remember any door signs/decorations. I don't think I started noticing them until the later 90's. I have to say, when I first saw them, I thought they were great and wondered where people got them. I really enjoyed seeing the different doorways and wished I had some on our door. A few cruises later, it dawned on me that people brought these from home and had fun decorating their doors and possibly their cabins.

I now make magnets/decorations for our room and anyone who is travelling with us. We have fun with them and always enjoy the comments we hear from people who go past our rooms. (I hope mr. or mrs. grumblypants never goes past our room while we are there).

One important thing though, make sure YOU clean your door/wall completely. If you happen to get the red things that bleed through (we accidentally did that on our Halloween cruise), ask the room steward for his cleaner the last day of your cruise at the latest. Take the red "globs" off and completely clean the door so the "bleeding" is gone and the door is spotless!

    Enjoy and have fun!:D

  12. This is Turnagain Arm, the body of water that juts in and cuts off the Kenai from Anchorage (kind of). There is a point called Beluga Point that I really wish we had stopped at. you are supposed to be able to see Beluga whales from that spot. We thought of it but you know how it is after driving a bit, you talk yourself out of it. A man on our tour the next day had done it and saw them. BUGGER!

Now you have something on your "Have to do next time we are in Alaska" list!:D

You have inspired me so much - not only have I booked a trip to Alaska for next June, I have already started booking tours! Thanks so much for your review!
