  1. I would love to take a solo cruise....i usually go with my kids but I think they're getting tired of cruises (!!). I'm actually hesitant about going alone, not because I'm afraid, but because I might be bored doing everything by myself. Going on the Breakaway for the second time this July, can't wait!

That's the benefit of solo cruising. You get to make all the decisions. Do what you want when you want. Want to be alone? You got it. Want to do things with others? No problem-- some cruise lines like NCL have solo meet-ups where solos can find dinner mates or someone to go on a shore excursion.

  2. Victorious8-

You might want to consider doing a back to back cruise if 7 days isn't long enough. Earlier this year I did just that on the NCL Jade in the Med-- had a great time and met many fun people.

The longer the cruise, the older the average age.

BTW, STUDYING for the bar is the hard part, finally TAKING it will be a relief. Good luck.

  3.

I appreciate everyone taking the time to read this. It took a lot of time and effort to put together. I have to admit that after all the work I put into it, I still didn't get half as many views or feedback as my reviews normally get. Maybe not as many people aren't interested in reading about an Asia cruise because it's not on their radar, I don't know. In any case, thanks to those of you who left positive words along the way and took the time to read some or all of it. :)

I certainly appreciate it. I just got back from cruising for 6 weeks so this was my first opportunity to read it. Like you, I generally travel solo.

I'm currently deciding between Australia and SE Asia for my next adventure and you've done an amazing amount of groundwork for me.

    Thanks again,

    Joe

  4. I start my trio of cruises next week. I do a 15 day TA from Rome (Civitavecchia) to Miami back to back with a 7 day Western Carib, then 6 days in southern FL, and finally a 10 day Southern Carib.

All told I'll be at sea for 32 of the 38 days. I think I'm developing a problem.

  5. Okay thank you that is what I wanted to know. I wouldn't have even been looking this up but my friend wanted to go on a singles cruise because of kids being around but it seems like there are ways around that without going on a singles cruise. Since I really just want to enjoy the cruise and not be hit on.

Then you don't want a singles cruise. If the kids bother you, it's best to avoid booking a cruise when they're off from school. So stay away from the summer and major holidays. I usually book a week that's just before or right after a holiday.

The benefit (besides lack of kids) is that they're usually cheaper.

  6. If you felt the TA was "never ending", then that type of cruise isn't for you.

I love TAs. I enjoy the relaxing nature of sea days, the ability to get to know fellow passengers and the lower prices a transatlantic offers. But they're not for everyone.

If you like a longer cruise but want it to be more port intensive, why not try a back to back? I combined an 11 day western Med with a 10 day eastern Med for a total of 21 days at sea with plenty of ports.

  7. Thanks to the OP for starting this thread. The stories and comments have been quite entertaining. :D

And thanks to Bqkali for showing us there's always an interesting, alternate way to look at things.

As for me, I have trouble sharing a bathroom with someone I'm intimate with, let alone a perfect stranger!

  8. I'm reading this thread for the 1st time the day after the OP posted the above comment.

Several responders had asked what ship? what line?

Didn't anyone see the box for the OP's Paradise Dec 12 sailing ? To me the answer to the question was already right there.

Must be tough to be the only smart person on CC.

Or maybe, just maybe, the box was added to her signature after her original post.

  9. I'm having the opposite problem. I like eating alone and reading. (What can I say, I put the "solo" in solo cruising.) I'm trying to ask about getting an MDR table to myself (a 2-top) on my upcoming X cruise and am being gently chided to dine with others. Sigh. :) Might be the buffet for me.

If you're going for fixed seating, perhaps there aren't enough tables. I cruise Celebrity a lot and usually choose select dining and have never had a problem getting a table for two for myself. If I choose to eat at the same time each evening, I usually request and get seated in the same section (with the same waiter).

Just ask-- sometimes they'll surprise you!

  10. Depends. Depends. Depends.

Which cruise line? Carnival- No. Celebrity- Yes.

Which Itinerary? Bermuda- No. Carib or Med- Yes.

$1000 for 8 days is not that expensive for a solo occupying a cabin designed for two passengers. That's $62.50/pp per day.

  11. I don't get it, you booked for two people, then changed it by dropping one and they didn't charge you a solo rate supplement?

Sorry for the confusion. Calypso & ChiGal got it right.

As an example.-- There have been instances where when I do a mock booking for 2, I'm able to book an inside guarantee for say $450/pp-- total $900. But when I go in to book as a solo, the available cabins do not list the "guarantee" cabin or other lower priced cabins, but instead start out at $1050 for a solo.

That's where I do the booking as if it were for two people.

  12. Hah. As a (relatively!) younger female who likes to travel alone, I'll have to keep this in mind and try not to frighten anyone.

    I could get a t-shirt made:

"I ALREADY HAVE ONE AT HOME, I DON'T WANT YOURS"

    ;)

    Fabulous.

I'm a solo guy and have never had any husband feel threatened by me. Then again, perhaps they'd be HAPPY if someone took their wives away!

  13. That's me too, looking for a solo cruise to Alaska for next summer, 2016! I am trying to find a bit smaller of a ship. I also would like to find a ship that offers some on-board classes to learn things like pc stuff, history, cooking, geographic (Alaska info). Anyone have any suggestions for me?

Of the cruise lines I've sailed, Crystal clearly is the winner for on-board classes. If that's outside of your price range, Celebrity would be my second choice.

    RCL and NCL would not.

  14. I don't remember which thread it was, but was there not a post about the single supplement being higher that 100% on some cruise?

Imagine a cruise line wanting you to pay more for just yourself than if you travel with someone who would just cost them more money to process and feed. I can only assume they make big bucks off passengers in the casino and thus want to discourage solo cruisers.

I haven't seen a single supplement more than 100%, but what I HAVE seen is a situation where during a mock booking I was unable to book a "guarantee" as a solo, but it was available for two people. That resulted in cabins which where more than double the rate for double occupancy.

My work-around was to have my TA set up the booking for two people and at a later time have one name dropped.

    Silly rabbits. :D
