  1. I think DancerBob raises a real good issue- the passenger makeup of a long cruise.

I haven't taken a 30 day, but have done a number of cruises between 14-19 days on Crystal, Azamara, Celebrity and Royal Carib.

At this point, I would not travel on Crystal or Azamara as a solo even though they are fine cruise lines.

  2. I was on the Eastern Mediterranean itinerary, which I really did enjoy. That was in January/February 2013. The weather in Athens was lovely, but it was bitterly cold in Istanbul.

The food was a real downside for me, as well as being woken up in the night by the neighbours!

Guess you were on the cruise before mine where it snowed in Istanbul?

I had the UDP, so I never tried the MDR. I'm a bit of a food snob and was disappointed with the inconsistency of the service and quality of the food. This was my first experience with NCL and has left a sour taste in my mouth (pun intended).

I guess I'll stick with Celebrity for now-- though I wish they did a better job with solos.

  3. Have just returned from my first solo cruise on NCL Jade and it was fantastic - they have a great program for solo travellers - coordinated meet up every evening and organised group meals etc. They even arranged a surprise party for my birthday. Met loads of really nice people.

You will have a great time!

    Anyone I may know? [emoji16]

I have to agree. I thought they did a fine job with the solo meet ups each evening at 6:30 pm.

  4. I booked NCL Jade - Venice to Venice - May 9-16 Adriatic Cruise. Very excited!

First time cruising alone so I am a bit nervous. Only went on one previous cruise which was a 3 day Bahamas one and that was only because it was part of a destination wedding package of a friend of a friend who was getting married in the Bahamas. I was so busy with doing wedding stuff that i didn't really get to enjoy anything about the cruise. So I feel like this will be my first real cruise experience.

I enjoy learning about ancient history so seeing all these historical sites in Turkey and Greece is right up my alley!

I recently sailed the Jade for 21 days doing a B2B in the Med. They did an EXCELLENT job with solo gatherings. There was a solo meetup each evening at 6:30 pm. So, if you were looking dinner companions or someone to go to the shows with, you could arrange that. It was hosted by an activities person who did a nice job of getting people together.

  5. Another line to consider is "near-luxury" Azamara. They are pretty much all-inclusive as well, and have a 25% supplement on a number of their sailings. Plus if you have "frequent cruiser" status with RCCL/Celebrity you get those perks on Azamara as well since they are a sister line.

I agree with this. Value/service-wise, Azamara fills the sweet spot between Crystal and Celebrity. I just with the demographics were a bit younger.

  6. I've never seen NCL do a cabin for a single passenger at less than 200%... (Other than a studio..) but I've always been able to book what ever I've wanted... Though I never tried a huge suite. But even the studio, which is built for just one...why should there be any supplement at all?

You're not searching the right NCL cruises. I'm doing a b2b on the Jade this Saturday in a Balcony guarantee as a solo and paid about 140%.

  7. Since you are clearly are opposed to sharing with her, the only question is whether you want her on the same cruise but different cabin.

If you want her, help her to book a cabin as a solo. If you don't want her, you can tell her you enjoy cruising alone or as another person said, quote her an expensive cabin rate. [emoji1]

  8. My experience on NCL is that you can just about "always" upgrade to a higher category if you are willing to pay more money. But some tactful negotiation may be required if the first representative you talk to just says "no."

As to your question about "what's available for solos," I would expect EVERY unbooked cabin to be available to me, and if I found out differently (and this was on a domestic departure), I would file a "denial of service" complaint with the Department of Justice or other cognizant state agency.

Easy there numbers guy. The cruise lines are not discriminating if they refuse to let a solo book a family veranda. They have a right to hold it to accommodate a larger group. I mean, do you go to restaurants solo and expect to be seated at a table for eight?!? [emoji3]

  9. It's a shame RCCL doesn't put a little more effort into solos. Even just fifteen minutes of a cruise director gathering/identifying solos at the meetings would help. When I went to the solo gathering on RCCL, I couldn't tell the difference between the afternoon drinkers and the solos, so I waited a half hour and left.

I had the exact same experience. Besides the afternoon drinkers there were early arrivals for trivia!

C'mon RCCL- just a bit better planning.

  10. I don't share with a person I know.....so to share a cabin with a

stranger?:eek:.....no thanks. Too many negative variables.....what

if they snore, what if they are clingy, what if they are less than

honest, what if, what if, what if??

I have lived on my own for almost my entire life.....I don't even share

a clicker here at home......so sharing a cabin? With someone I have

never met? Not going to happen.

Don't share a clicker?!? You sound like me! :D

  11. You make a good point. I have observed that Royal's loyalty perks (Diamond and above) are significantly better than that of NCL.

Booking a Balcony or even inside, with Diamond or D+ perk on Royal, is actually a very good deal. On my recent NCL sailing, I most definitely missed the Diamond Club evening cocktail hours.

I have given feedback to NCL that they may want to re-look at their loyalty perks, especially for their higher tiers.

Thanks for your postings. I have to admit that I've been reluctant to try a new cruise line having gotten used to the loyalty program perks too.

But the price of the NCL Jade 10 day Eastern Med cruise was too low to pass up. So, I'm giving them a shot. Your review and comments have eased my mind (even though I'm solo and won't be in the 2 BR suite!). Thanks again.

    Joe
