  1. From what I remember (from YEARS ago) HAL is a bit older of a line than your friends. Celebrity was fantastic last time I was on it, Princess was nice as well, but a slight bit below Celebrity. I'd also recommend against Carnival, based on your description of your friends. Best of luck!

  2. I did it! I booked it! Thanks for the feedback, and if I can find this thing, cya on board! :D

Well, if you're in a studio, the lounge will be right down the hall from you. The LGBT will be in the Daily (the "what's happening on the boat" newsletter you get every day.)

    Congrats on your first cruise!

  3. I'm just about to confirm my booking for this one. Any advice for a nervous, first-time cruiser going solo?

If you're going solo, I've heard good things about the studios on the Epic. They have special events in the lounge for the studio guests, most of whom (I think) are sailing solo.

Also, come to the LGBT thing the first night. That'll be another good way to make some friends for the cruise. We've done several dinner meet-ups with people after that, and we all tended to get together each night for drinks too.

Also, cruises are a blast in general. NCL is pretty informal, so you the dressiest you need to get is a pair of slacks and a polo. Otherwise, just grab some shorts and go!

  4. The big killer with the UBP is the requirements to have both of a couple buy it and to have to buy it for every frickin day of the cruise. Instead of just certain days. Either way, remember their actual cost per drink, (to NCL itself), is probably about $1 per, no matter what kind of drink, due to wholesale pricing and buying in huge quantities.

Well, they also have to pay the bartenders, other bar staff, maintain the space, etc. That said, it's common(ish) knowledge that the extra the boats make on drinks goes in part to offset the price of everything else. If we save on drinks, the cruise rates go up.

  5. So I pay $8 to $10 per drink, while the person with the UBP may pay only $3 per. I wonder if anyone has ever figured it out on a per drink basis. I am happy for the UBP folks, just wish I could take advantage of the savings as well. :)

You can take advantage of the savings. All you have to do is buy the UBP and drink as much as they do. Problem solved!

Note: this will cost you more than your current plan.
