  1. Why is it so important to know who the CD is? My cruise has never been made better or worse because of who this person was. Most the time I find then to be extremely obnoxious and annoying. Also while were at it, same question about the Matre D. Does it really make that big a difference?

    Agree and disagree.....

Mike Pack, Karl with A K, Dr. E.....to name a few that really are awesome!

Some others, unnamed, yeah ok, not that good.

  2. I don't think you can request them far in advance, but in Miami, there are Uber drivers everywhere and you hardly have to wait at all. If you like a nicer car, like a Cadillac or BWM, for example, you can request UberX, for a bit higher price. But even ordering the base Uber, I've always had nice, clean cars, and sometimes if an X driver is nearby and bored, they'll pick you up for the base price.

I don't know about Uber, but with Lyft you can schedule a pickup a few days ahead at a specified time.

As I mentioned in a post above, we needed a 4:15AM p/u to go from our hotel to the FLL airport. I set the p/u in the app for 4:10-4:20AM---driver was at the door of our hotel at 4:10AM.

I'm not sure if you can do the same with Uber.

  3. We have never used Uber but will next week for the 1st time. However we have a question regarding requesting a car at 4:00am to travel to our airport. At that time how long could we expect to wait or should we call for the car sooner? We are 15 minutes from Columbus, OH airport and have a 5:30am flight. I apologize if this is the wrong thread to be asking this ? If so could someone direct me to the correct thread. I have the App on my phone and loaded a credit card for payment. Thx

Post-cruise last week we stayed two nights in Fort Lauderdale--We needed to leave the hotel Monday morning at 4:15AM for an early morning flight.

I set up a Lyft pickup the night before-(right in the app)-it gave me a 10-minute window, 4:10-4:20AM.

Got a text a few minutes before the p/u time--the driver was at the door of our hotel at 4:10.

    Worked perfectly. :)

  4. We used Larry's Limo for the opposite direction trip last year, Port of Miami to hotel on 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale, and have the same trip booked early December.

This reply speaks to the service encountered.

The price with gratuity is $102.00.

The service is outstanding--I use their chat service when booking; they send an email with all details and then you confirm the booking at that time.

The driver was excellent, the vehicles are sedans or suv's, and there was no negative to the entire process.

  5. We're arriving back to the Port of Miami on December 3rd and going to stay a couple of nights at the Embassy Suites on 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale.

I'm trying to find out if there is a company that offers shared shuttles for this specific trip.

SAS and QLS do not go to 17th Street from Miami port; I've priced Larry's Limo (no shared service); I have an idea what Uber or Lyft would be (unless this is a time when the price gets jacked up).

In the past we've used dedicated sedans or taxis, or gone to FLL Airport and then taxi'd over, etc.

Anyone specifically go from Miami port to a hotel on 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale?

    Thanks!

  6. I don't believe this is a problem with the back-up generator, which was installed after the Triumph fire to provide power to hotel functions. Liberty has 6 diesel generators, and typically the ship can make full speed with only 5, allowing one to be down for maintenance at a time. They would have to have had a second generator fail while one is down for maintenance to prevent full speed. If it is a problem with the diesels, this can be repaired fairly quickly (couple weeks at tops). I'm suspecting another failure of a winding in one of the propulsion electric motors. Each motor has two windings, which provide half the power of the motor, so with one winding out, one propeller can give full power, and one propeller is limited to half power. Another Carnival ship (can't remember which) has this problem currently, and this type of problem can't be repaired without a drydocking, currently scheduled for December.

Now I'm curious--how do they fix it? Is it a fix in the engine room? Do they have to be stopped to work on it?

    Thx!

  7. Pretty sure the subject has been thoroughly covered in the existing fairly-long thread about it.

In case people haven't read the thread, it's here...

Multiple pages of people wringing their hands and insisting it will be a disaster.

Yet those who have sailed Splendor since they started it have said it's no problem.

Come on....I just made a fresh batch of popcorn.....let's not let facts get in the way of these good stories!

  8. These are all great questions, and while I cannot speak for everyone, I'll answer for me. For us it's not really a cost issue; we cruise when our schedules allow it, and this year it was late October. Knowing full well it's the height of hurricane season, we purchased travel insurance thru USAA, so if we have to cancel we can do so without taking a huge loss. I fully understand the risks involved and know that our ports may be changed or canceled, and the cruise itself might be canceled. We live in Baltimore and saw that happened 4 years ago during Hurricane Sandy...and wound up benefitting from it because Carnival offered a 3 day cruise to nowhere on the tail end of Sandy. And I guess that's the final piece for us, we embark very close to home and don't have the added stress of traveling to an embarkation port.

Great post--nice level-headed answer. And smart to purchase insurance.

  9. Thank you! I am well aware it's not the ideal situation but that is why I am trying to ascertain if it is doable before I book anything.

    Anything is doable--your decision.

If you're flying from Buffalo in July, probably no issues. If you're flying from Buffalo in February, you have to hope for good weather and no delays all down the eastern coast.

If you're willing to chance it, go for it--and if you make it, great. If not, live and learn.

    Good luck.

  10. Why don't you try two cans and a piece of string. For those of you thinking I am a jerk, I am going to be on the cruise with him and am giving him a hard time.:)

You should have just posted the first sentence without the additional info.

The uproar and 700-800 replies would have been priceless. :D:D
