1. YUCKERS!! I don't like that either. :(

I don't like organ meats, okra, or cilantro. Cilantro tastes like soap to me. If it's in fresh salsa, I'm okay as long as there's very little of it. Otherwise, I have to pass.

I'm with you on the Cilantro.... people used to think I was sooooo strange thinking it tasted like soap (dishwashing liquid, to be precise)....

Then I read that it is an actual genetic predisposition for a certain percentage of the population.... we can't help it...

One of my daughters loves cilantro, and the other one also thinks it tastes like soap... so apparently only one takes after me... :)

The same is true of brussels sprouts (which I LOVE)... there is a genetic reason that there are people who hate them.

2.
Are the menu options and quality of the food the same for the AYWD and Main Dining room?
Exactly the same. It is the same restaurant and kitchen.
If you think in terms of going to your favorite restaurant, and having your favorite table always available to you, or one time desiring to just show up and being seated at a different table.... it's not exactly the same thing, but it makes it easier to get the concept.
The food is the same, either way.
3. Steak? On a cruise ship?

Only those who live in Texas or some midwestern states have had REAL steak...why eat what was probably frozen on a cruise ship?

The above comment is just as ridiculous and pompous as the lobster comment.

I have no idea what the OP is thinking.... lots of people have no access to lobster EXCEPT frozen, and at that, it is usually too pricey for them.

Let people enjoy what they enjoy... what's it to you?

4. Steaks have no blood in them, no matter how rare they are. What you are seeing is purge, when the Sacroplasm (think vitamins) starts to leave the muscle as it cooks. All blood is drained when the animal is slaughtered.

Maybe too much detail...?

I think it was more appealing when I thought it was blood :D

5. Of all the foods or extras served on a cruise, are there things that gross you out? Mine would be:

Mushrooms: C'mon, they're fungus. I'm a fun guy but I don't eat fungi. It takes me a long time to pick the mushrooms out of food or off of pizza.

Tomatoes: I love tomato sauce, ketchup, etc., but a raw tomato looks like it's full of snot. And chunks of tomatoes in spaghetti or chili look like blood clots.

Eggs (any style). First of all, think about where eggs come from. And the yellow, runny yolk also looks like snot (I sense a theme here). Plus, they taste nasty. I'll never understand how anyone can eat an egg without vomiting it right up. Don't get me started on eggs benedict.

There's my list (and trust me, I have a lot more than three)...:p

The only thing I ever couldn't eat was crickets, which are quite commonly eaten in many Asian countries.

Since they don't serve them on cruise ships, I have to say there is absolutely nothing I find gross or inedible....

And mushrooms? They haven't invented a way to prepare mushrooms that I don't absolutely LOVE.

You remind me of my biz partner... I always kid him that some people talk about the 4 food groups they eat... with him, it's the 4 foods. :D

• Haha 1
6. OMG...do you have a crunchy bug phobia like me??? I am deathly afraid of any bug that crunches when you step on it but if I found a snake in my tub I'd probably play with it. ;)

I'm the same.... I can deal very nicely with anything that has 4 legs or fewer.

Once we get to 6 legs or more, no thanks!... and if they crunch, I shudder just thinking about it!

I always laugh that here in Florida they call em "Palmetto bugs", but they are just plain ol' roaches as far as I'm concerned... well, except they are a whole lot bigger and can fly....ick

We consider pest control one more expense, like mortgage and utilities... I want no creepy crawlies in my house!

7. I grew up with everyone in my family eating meat that looked like it belonged on an autopsy table.

For a long time I was turned off to beef entirely.

The first time I tasted a steak I really enjoyed was at a restaurant where the guy I was dating at the time ordered his medium rare, I tried it, and it was perfect!

Now, medium rare all the way, for me.

8. For money, you can get anything.

Gone are the days when they actually made you feel special for free....

Of course, it wasn't much, but it was something....

we still crack up when we think of one of our earlier Carnival cruises...... it was the Tropicale out of San Juan 21 years ago, our 15 year anniversary.

A cake was brought to us, and a group of waiters sang "Happy Occasion to you!".....

apparently they used the same song for whatever you were celebrating.... :D

9. My first cruise was on the Mardi gras in 1986, 4 day cruise to

the Bahamas, Freeport and Nassau.

i was on that sailing! i used to work for Liberty Travel, a jillion years ago, and the owner had an interest in Carnival, so we used to be able to cruise for the cost of port taxes... gone are the days!

but my first cruise was on the old Italian Line, the Leonardi Da Vinci, out of NY somewhere back in the late 60s, early 70s... darned if i can remember exactly when!

(getting old much? ;))

10. Thank you, Mancunian....

That was a helpful reply. First-person experience is what I was looking for, not a generic response... and you gave it.

As a matter of fact, I think, since it is easier to change from a "set dining time" to the flexible dining, and we are only allowed one change, that we are going to see what our first night's table brings us, and then perhaps change over to flexible.... to get, as you put it, "the best of both worlds"

And thanks Ruth (your response showed after i posted)... i think that is exactly the right plan of action!

11. Not sure if this has been asked... (OK, so I am lazy... i only read the last 8 pages! :p )

My husband and I keep going back and forth with this... Here are the arguments we are having with ourselves....

Part of us likes the freedom of eating when we like, but the other part of us really enjoys knowing our servers and having them know us.

We have had tablemates who were fun and interesting, and we were so glad to see them every evening.

Then we have had the unfortunate experience of having tablemates who apparently knew each other, and had no desire to include anyone else in their circle... we spent the whole cruise feeling alone in a crowd... it was awful.

(I'm not going to even get into one cruise where we were seated at a table for 8, and all 4 couples spoke a different language.... none of them any that that any of the others spoke... sort of like going to a UN summit without a translator!)

When seated at breakfast, it is usually open seating, and you meet some wonderful people... so that is sort of like dine as you please..... and is pleasant.

We are booked for late sitting.... then we hear this can interfere with showtimes, which frankly is not that big a deal, but is a consideration.

Should we try it out, and if we are not happy, switch to "as you please"? (which i understand is not a problem)

So the upshot is.... I dunno... do I sound needy? :D

Which one of those arguments sounds more persuasive?
