  1. The morning hours are a bit limited for my taste. I think the thermal suite opened at 7 am on my Dream cruise last December, but it wasn't "warmed up" yet at that time - quite an unpleasant surprise to sit down on a cold tile lounger that early in the morning! I still enjoyed spending my mornings on the tiled loungers, waiting for the breakfast locations to open (cruise ships are NOT geared for early risers, clearly!), but I learned to put a towel or my robe between myself and the tile for the first 20 minutes or so.

  2. Hummm, the military must have change this rule, because back in the 70's when I was in the USMC, I was able to drink at age 18 in all of the bars on base.

In the 70s, the legal drinking age in most states was 18 or 19; that could be why you were able to drink on base. ;)

I agree that making alcohol "forbidden fruit" for teenagers is not a healthy approach. My parents allowed me a small glass of wine at holiday events starting in my late teens; I didn't really care for the taste (turns out my family buys REALLY cheap wine!), so drinking never really appealed to me, and it took me until graduate school to develop any kind of taste for alcohol.

  3. As far as being least of one's problems, put yourself in my shoes - drink enough so that you definitely have to urinate immediately, then (in your case - my case is not under control) hold it for four hours. Now repeat daily for a week (over 50 years in my case) and report back.

I hate to take this thread further off the rails, but teachers deal with this every day. It is rare for an elementary level teacher, for example, to have any opportunity at all to use the rest room during the work day, except during lunch IF that teacher doesn't have cafeteria supervision duties.

In my line of work, it isn't unusual for me to go 12-16 hours without access to a restroom. As my job can be physical in nature, staying hydrated is critical for safety. Having to "hold it" for hours, unless one suffers from a physical condition affecting the bladder/kidneys, is not the end of the world. Especially in an emergency situation.

  4. All I care about is if there is SUPPORT on the mattress! You can ask for a duvet to be put under the fitted sheet, if you need padding. When I think of a "soft" mattress, I think of a saggy, unsupportive surface.....which I've had before. Rather have a supportive unpadded mattress than something with dips and holes!

I agree completely. I have back and hip issues; if I sleep on a soft, saggy mattress, I am in pain for days afterwards. Give me support any day!

  5. Thanks for the advice. I thought staggered check in was supposed to alleviate all the mess at the beginning. Lol

It would alleviate most of the crowds if people would follow directions and wait to show up when they are supposed to. When I sailed out of New Orleans in December, we arrived at the terminal around 11:30 (had a 10:30 am check-in time) and there were huge lines outside the terminal of people who had arrived hours before their assigned check-in time. They weren't happy when we were escorted past all of them and into the terminal. Once inside, we didn't have to wait more than 1-2 minutes at any point before boarding the ship. I'm sure that those who arrived much too early will tell everyone about how awful the lines were and how unorganized the port was...all because they couldn't follow simple directions...

  6. just a small comment - Katia will affect Mexico, north east section above the Yucatan and below Texas. No where near Central America which consists of Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Belize, Guatamala and Honduras.

Even more technical, Mexico is actually in North America, same as the USA and Canada. The eartquake was in the Pacific Ocean off Mexico's southwest coast, technically North America.

If that earthquake causes a tsunami and/or there are sizeable aftershocks, there's a good chance that more than Mexico would be affected. Mexico is part of the Gulf Coast, thus my inclusion of BOTH the Gulf Coast and Central America as areas that we shouldn't be wishing category 5 hurricanes on.

She shifted west! Go west young lady, and keep going.... !

Did you really just wish a catastrophic hurricane on the already reeling Gulf coast and/or Central America (Hurricane Katia/8.0 earthquake)???

No one wants this to impact their vacation or home, but...really?

  8. I am waiting for that person from 2 days ago to come back at say "This aint Tennessee" when referencing the Nashville flooding........

Ah found them.... just 2 days ago....

Thank you for saying it so that I didn't have to. My heart goes out to all the people of Houston and surrounding areas. Having lived through a similar disaster myself, I know the horror of what they are facing.

  9. Realizing the magnitude of the disaster, I wouldn't really care all that much about a cruise at this point. People are dying and losing everything...the cruise seems less consequential than it would have beforehand.

Well...at least that is how I have felt about travel after disasters when it has happened to me...

    Agreed.

  10. Happy to see more realistic and reasonable responses on this thread than the one on the RCI board, although I am very sorry for all who are having their travel plans upended by the storm. I hope any posters local to the area are taking appropriate precautions; I have one friend in Corpus Christi who has evacuated to San Antonio and another south of Houston who is riding out the storm on relatively high ground.

This amount of rainfall is nothing to mess around with, to say nothing of the wind and storm surge.

  11. From the Mayor at 12:10 PM: "20" rain anticipated between now and Wednesday, 2-4 ft. storm surge, no high winds. This is not Ike, but exercise caution and use common sense"

This is not the worst storm in a decade - Ike was with a 20' storm surge that 85% of the Island. This is not even close in comparison. Harvey is rain over multiple days.

You are grossly and dangerously underestimating the impact of 20" of rain in a single event. In May 2010, Nashville received roughly that amount of rain over 36 hours. The result was DEVASTATING flooding over nearly 2/3 of the state of Tennessee. It was the worst natural disaster in state history. An entire building floated away down I-24 on live television. It took weeks for the metro areas to get back to normal and YEARS for some of the more rural roads to be fully repaired. Nashville sits at a significantly higher elevation than the Texas coast, with many natural waterways for the rainwater to run into, and wasn't looking at a storm surge event on top of that amount of moisture.

I wish all the best to residents and visitors to the southeast Texas area. But it would be the height of foolishness to travel into this storm.

  12. I've always ordered two appetizers instead of one appetizer and a salad, and it has never been a problem. Most of the appetizers I like are less filling than a salad, so that has worked in my favor. As others have pointed out, the steakhouse meal is a lot of food!

  13. I'm going to bypass the not-so-subtle racist undertones of your question and point out that ANY vacation spot is likely to be more rowdy than usual during spring break season. If you don't want to deal with that kind of atmosphere, then pick very expensive trips. It won't eliminate the craziness but should reduce it slightly, since most college students don't have unlimited budgets.

  14. Barrachina, absolutely! Their pina coladas are amazing. I don't even like coconut, and I've loved these on both of my visits to San Juan. Just be sure to stir thoroughly before sipping - they don't skimp on the rum!

  15. OP let's simplify things.

    Breakfast 2 Mimosa's / Bloody Mary's/ Bailey's with Coffee

    Afternoon 3- 4 drinks

    Pre-dinner 2 Martini's or 2 Achlemy Bar Coctails

Dinner 2 Drinks/ Glasses of wine

Evening 2-3 Cocktails while watching shows/walking around

That's approx 11 drinks over a 12 hour period. It can easily be done without much effort.

Bingo you have your monies worth.

This. It's not hard at all to "get your money's worth" with Cheers and never even approach being drunk. The package price is more than reasonable, in my opinion. No need to try to stockpile liquor.

  16. Due to its immense size, Ike caused devastation from the Louisiana coastline all the way to the Kenedy County region near Corpus Christi, Texas. In addition, Ike caused flooding and significant damage along the Mississippi coastline and the Florida Panhandle.

This is not AT ALL meant to belittle the damage Ike created but to reaffirm the sheer size of its path...

My most vivid memory of Ike was competing at a horse show in Lexington, KY. The outer bands were so large that we had tropical storm-force winds arriving ahead of the storm all the way up there. Let me tell you, you haven't felt adrenaline until you've been riding a horse while the power goes out at the exact moment that wind gusts fling folding tables off a mezzanine and into the stands, ten feet away from said horse...[emoji15] For once in his life, my guy was a real trooper at that moment and just kept marching around. Most other riders were not that lucky!

  17. Thanks for the great review.

I agree about the BBQ. The food was cold and the beans were just nasty.

The pic of the broken umbrellas made me laugh! Years ago I paid $1 for a Carnival poncho which I still have. I think they're $3 now. Still a deal.

I liked Mr. Sanchos a lot better than Nachi.

For future notice: anti social in psychiatry means criminal. Say socially shy or something else.

Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, the BBQ was probably the worst meal I've ever had on a cruise; hopefully what they are serving at the newer BBQ venues on other ships is much better!

I think that Carnival poncho will stay packed in my suitcase permanently. You never know when a poncho will come in handy! I don't have a great track record with umbrellas...

I haven't ever visited Mr. Sancho's, but I know a lot of people enjoy it. Nachi is (mostly) very quiet and peaceful, with few children, and I enjoy that quite a bit.

I've gone back and read through this entire thread twice now and can't find any reference to "anti social". Maybe you got mixed up with something that was in another post?
