  1. Just and observation on this - my travel agent (maybe only them?) insists on reducing the value of a cruise next certificate by the value reduction of their commission e.g. if they got 10% commission, then by giving them a 250 certificate they would lose 25 commission so only give me credit of 225. If that makes sense!

That is so so wrong. You should get a new travel agent. Have used the certificates for years and that has never been done by our travel agent.

  2. Thanks for the insights! I will just have to await my next cruise on the Escape to check it out. We will use the dining room on the Gem.

    Happy Cruising!

Was on the Gem in October. They did offer sandwiches, soup and salads in Modernos one sea day. That was because the weather was bad and the buffet and dining room were full. Nothing really special.

  3. We received the $50 off the day after each port excursion. The only time we received it at the end wàs in Bermuda since that is considered one port even though we were there three days.

We booked at the special number so didn't have to prepay. We went to the excursion desk and they put our platinum discount on our account. If you book online you have to prepay and the discount comes off then.

  4. There have certainly been reported cases of missed ports (not replaced, just skipped) with no refund of fees from NCL. People ask about it, and the answer on board is simply "no money back". And other times the refund happens automatically on board.

I haven't heard of: people not getting a refund or port fees unless they complain (on board or after the cruise), or some people getting an automatic refund and other people on the same sailing getting nothing. I would be interested in hearing reports of such situations. Maybe the OP was actually refunded and overlooked it, but it's strange that they specifically asked about it and got told "no".

I think there was just a misunderstanding. I heard and I was told Guest Services were waiting to hear from corporate. They said they knew nothing which I believed. The credit just came on our account automatically.

  5. We have eaten there on the Gem, Breakaway and Epic.Yes the meat might be salty just tell them to give you another batch. We keep going back. Salad bar is okay with fancy type of foods. We prefer the meat. Love the lamb chops and the pineapple. Hubby had two different types of chicken. We plan on going back again next year.

  6. I recently returned from the 10/21 NCL Gem sailing TO CANADA. We skipped our last port due to an impending tropical storm heading up the east coast. I inquired if we would be getting back those port charges-got an answer of NO. I don't want any other compensation but would think that the cruise line couldn't keep those taxes/charges as they did not need to be paid by the Gem. Feeling confused

We were on the same cruise. We were refunded the port charges.it was posted on Oct 30 as refundable onboard credit of $14 per person. We also got $9 per person for the loss of the afternoon in Quebec City. Check your final statement. It doesn't say port charges but it was there.

  7. And I'm sure someone will let me know if I'm wrong, but I heard that the new policy is that you need to cancel a reservation within 24 hours or you will be charged $15.00 and that may mean changing your reservation from 4 to 3.

We were on the Gem two weeks ago. There was nothing about this charge. The only item about dining was unclaimed reservations will be released after 15 minutes.

    People were cancelling last minute.

  8. Has anyone tried to your their Platinum certificate just for the bottle of wine (even though I know that they aren't "good")?

We will be Platinum on our February cruise. We are in the Haven and will already have three specialty meals. We may or may not want to go back for two more. Has anyone had any luck handing them the certificate and asking for the wine, but just had the meals charged to the SDP?

None of this is a big deal to us -- I'm just curious.

    Thanks!

We have done it. Hostess said sure no problem. Did it when we had the extra SDP last night of cruise and Platinum meal left. We were able to get bottle of wine and order what we wanted.

  9. Thanks.

We are also low-maintenance so I'll just give it a week and if nothing comes I'll call and have them send luggage tags.

Our luggage has always come OK in other cabins but if the special tags mean we get it sooner (and reduce the chance of lost luggage from 1% to 0.01%) it might be worth doing.

Don't wait to call. It takes awhile to send them. No problem if they don't.

If you want special pillows or your minibar empitied ahead of time email at norwegianconciergedesk@ncl.com. You can mention you didn't receive the letter and tags.

  10. Does NCL still send out luggage tags? I haven't seen any and just wanted to verify if this is still done. If they don't I assume I have to download them. If I download them, how on earth do they want me to attached them so they don't get torn off. Paper does tear

They do send the tags out if you are in a suite. Otherwise others gave you great advice.

  11. Ok, anyone know if baseball playoffs will be shown? Hoping for a fan-fueled Yankee cruise out of NY this Sunday! Nothing like watching the games with a bunch of fellow fans.

I do recall baseball playoffs being shown on past cruises, but I realize the network is everything. Games are on Fox and Fox Sports 1 (FS1) - anyone know if these channels are part of the abysmally small channel lineup?

Football, soccer, basketball yes. NCL baseball no.

We were on the Breakaway last October during the World Series . We asked the concierge why no baseball. He told us Norwegian doesn't get the feed. We kept checking scores online.

  12. And supposedly you're limited to just one appetizer on the SDP, though nobody seems able to confirm this for . sure.

When we ate there last October, I ordered an appetizer and a soup. The waiter told me there would be an additional charge. I wasn't in the mood for an argument . When we received our bill, he had not charged for the soup. I think they just tell you one of each to keep you from ordering many appetizers. If you go by the terms, there should be no restrictions on amounts.

  13. I see in your menu. Cagney's does not have lobster tail as surf and turf. Its substituted as jumbo shrimp?

Does that mean lobster tail is in ocean blue only? And if so why is it $17.70 charge? When using the SDP if thats also a a la carte menu

Ocean Blue has an upcharge. Even though you have the dining package, you would need to pay ($15 plus the 18% gratuity) the extra amount to eat there

  14. Quick question ..... if you have obc you cannot make reservations ahead of time because they charge your cc? There is no way to secure your reservation and then once on board switch it over so you can utilize your obc?? I guess you could cancel within the 24 hour notice and immediately rebook using your credit or is that frowned upon??

Sent from my iPad using Forums

Ala carte restaurants you are not charged so you can make reservations there.

  15. Hi there, did you ever hang out at the Great Outdoors? Was it open / crowded? Hear it the best place to be at for the view of the ocean.[/quote

Great place to relax. We usually got our food from the buffet and then sat there to enjoy the view. There is a smaller buffet and bar out there also.
