  1. I disagree. We've been on a couple Med cruises w/our kids - one on an RCI Freedom class ship, the other on a ship w/o watersides, aqua park, Flowrider, DreamWorks experience, Royal Promenade, had smaller youth/teen program facilities, etc.

Each cruise had a sea day, plus a couple days where we only spent part of the day off the ship. The ship made a big difference to our experience, particularly our kids.

OP, I'm not familiar with many of the other lines, but where kids are concerned, I think an RCI Freedom or Oasis class ship would be a good place to start. Yeah, they're full on floating amusement parks, not for everyone, but we had a great time .

  2. The shuttle and wait are what make the rental on Honolulu inconvenient. I suggest arranging a ride (cab, Lyft, NOT a shuttle) to the airport and get a rental there. A little cheaper than Waikiki, and the shuttle will cost you time. Plus, Haleiwa will not take the whole day. With a rental, it will ultimately be more convenient and less expensive to make the most of your time and do more stuff.

Sorry, I don't have an answer to your question, but having made the drive to the North Shore and as a frequent ride hailing service user, it's hard to see any convenience being worth what I think it would cost.

  3. I am in the "hate sea days" group. If it was me, I would fly both ways so I can enjoy Hawaii instead of having to stand at the railing and stare at the sea. Different strokes etc.

    DON

It's depressing enough having to board a plane for the mainland at the end of a week or two vacation on the islands. Four progressively colder sea days after being teased with only four partial days in Hawaiian ports is like a slow death.

  4. Some good advice above. I'll just add...

We brought our kids to Hawaii when they were 2 and 4. At those ages, we chose beaches over tours and excursions. Do some homework on Trip Advisor and rent a car to get there.

YMMV, but the right call for us.

  5. +1 Harper's

ALL the other companies were booked during our holiday cruise a few years ago. We were lucky to get one of Harper's remaining SUVs, and we didn't have to go to the airport. They did p/u and drop off at the port for the very short drive to their Hilo location. Too easy.

  6. My Pet Peeve: No division between smoking and non-smoking sections of casino.

Divide the thing with a glass wall and good ventilation on the smoking side so the smoke doesn't drift out of the smoking side into adjacent parts of the ship. That way everyone can gamble comfortably in their desired section of casino.

 My Pet Peeve: People in the buffet placing the tongs so the part of the tongs people touch lay on the food.

Stick the tongs in the food or container so that the handle sticks above the food or lays outside of the container.

 My Pet Peeve: Elevators! 1) People not letting elevator riders off before piling in. 2) And piling in if there is a handicapped person or a person in a wheelchair needing to exit the elevator. 3) People piling into an elevator before handicapped or a wheelchair is able to get in first and get positioned.

Be courteous!!! It may be you or a loved one someday who needs time to safely get in or out before being swarmed!

This checks all boxes for me - smokers, touching food & elevator idiots.

  7. "Nah, I'm good. You guys go ahead and pray. I'm gonna slap some butter on a slice of bread while it's still warm and wash it down with a sip of wine. Thanks, though.

"For tomorrow, you guys mind if we snag the seats you're in tonight? Also, I was gonna have the maitre d announce our arrival to the table. Can you guys take a video for us? Cool."

  8. We've broken new ground in the past 227 days and 7 hours. Except for those who are truly closed minded or let their politics get in the way of sound thought and judgement, certain things are not a matter of opinion but are just plain truth, without quotes. It's difficult to bite one's tongue when someone else is spewing crap, attempting to normalize bigotry, hate, homophobia, etc. in the name of politics or patriotism. MDR or not, I won't let it go.

It's best I dine at a two top, thank you.

  9. The FAQ does not provide a link to a peer reviewed study supporting their assertion nor do they address the issue of whether handling by sanctuary staff induces tachycardia. This is an important point since tachycardia is a physiological response to both pleasurable as well as stressful situations.

Any human who has been in a loving relationship knows without resorting to google that an increased heart rate, tachycardia, is a physiological response to pleasure. For those who have not had this experience, you can find peer reviewed studies using google or searching on pubmed. The keywords should be obvious to any human.

So the sloth had an increased heart rate because it really enjoyed being handled by you, the two of you shared a "moment" and quality bonding time, and it smiled at you?

Or, the increased heart rate was caused by a wild animal being freaked out by being held by yet another strange tourist and the uncertainty of any discomfort it might feel (again), a scent that might bother it, fibers from that tourists clothing that might be upsetting, etc.

I'm for skepticism and critical thought as much as the next guy, but in the absence of "peer reviewed studies", I would hope that most people are able to defer to common sense.

  10. Do you have scientific evidence for this or is it an opinion having no factual basis. My experience is exactly the opposite. Both the sloth and I found it a very enjoyable and calming experience and I encourage all to do this!

And you know the sloth enjoyed it because it told you so?

I can provide other links, but any human can Google that for themselves.

  11. Our kids in that age group hang out in the Challengers Arcade, ping pong area, sports court, etc and have typically found friends around the same age w/common interests within the first day or two.

I'd walk w/my son from one end of the ship to the other, and we can get thru w/o him saying hi to other kids he's met on board.

  12. Many benefits w/going with a TA, as mentioned. One drawback - we missed out on a price adjustment or upgrade when the TA was inaccessible on a wknd to contact the cruise line on our behalf.

I've also dealt with one or two TAs who were either too busy or inexperienced to provide the level of service I expected. Bottom line, do your homework and make an informed TA selection.

  13.

I've gotten so that I grab a napkin to use to pick up the tongs/spoon/whatever when at the buffet. Too many times have I seen someone lick their fingers then grab them.

RE: Eggs. I always get the omelette station to scramble or fry them for me. Fresh and tasty!

Lol, yeah, I disinfect again after putting my plate on the table and losing the tray.

The omelette station is my 1st stop at breakfast, no matter how long the wait.

This is obvious, but I avoid any food that I catch a pax reaching for w/their bare hands. Sadly, this happens all too frequently. Are we at the point where the cruise lines need to spell this out, in multiple languages?

  14. ... not play dress up. We avoided this for the first time on our last cruise, so liberating. Didn't eat in the MDR on dress-up nights, and didn't miss it. Having packed for and participated in this many times already, we don't see ourselves doing it anymore.
