  1. The country of Colombia is spelled with an O, the school, Columbia, with a U. This suggests it was the school.

Yes I know that but the link to the article says "Columbia trained"

Why bother to put it that way? Why not be more specific?

Does that mean "training" at Columbia or degree from Columbia?

    Internship/residency versus 4 year degree?

Bottom line....the article should have been more specific ...and said the entire name of the medical school attended..number of years as a doctor etc....because that would have lent more accuracy to the article....of course I doubt accuracy was even considered

We all should know by know that the point of most any journalist is to...confuse the readers into thinking the worst and based on things I've read recently I doubt the writer of the article even knew the difference in spelling the country Colombia or the school Columbia anyway.

    Sorry but true.

  2. What's wrong with Columbia medical school? It's ranked #6 for internal medicine among US schools, and #11 for research.

It's doesn't say in the article Columbia Medical school

    It says Columbia trained...

So does that mean trained in the country of Columbia

    Or

Graduated from the Ivy League Columbia University

Journalists today are rather sneaky aren't they?

  3. Since you don't go places where people smoke, you obviously don't know that most smokers are young.

Older people seem to figure it out and stop.

The only answer I have for you is that I live just outside NYC and it is very obvious that the vast majority of people do not smoke

I'm guessing they are intelligent enough to not only recognize the risk factors but to all realize that the financial burden to smoke is astronomical

It helps that ny state has very restrictive smoking laws

I'm guessing it's only a matter of time until ship leaving from NYC will have to adopt the local no smoking rules even out at sea if they want to continue to sail out of NYC

Isn't that the case in places like Australia and England?

  4. really?? I gamble quite a bit and I for one am sick of the people in the casino who are just sitting there smoking. It is not a smoking room, it is a casino with a portion for smoking. So unless you are gambling while you are smoking find somewhere else to smoke. This is really ridiculous considering how many states (and countries for that matter) ban smoking indoors.

In New York State you can't even smoke in a public park

Even jones beach has big no smoking signs up

Of course some people can't read and do smoke but they are few and far between

Can't smoke on state college campuses either. Totally smoke free the entire perimeter of the campus from remote parking lots to the main buildings

So not only is indoor smoking seeing it's total and complete demise so is outdoor smoking thankfully

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't casinos non smoking out of certain ports? Australia? Southampton?

Why is that? Local laws perhaps?

It's only a matter of time until USA ports and the ships leaving them follow suit. I predict NYC will be first

Of course after my recent 2 day pre cruise stay in Miami where you can basically smoke anywhere (cultural influences I assume) Florida ports will be last to ban smoking.

  5. Been on Nav of the seas it is the same...i am sorry but smoking should be allowed, they have jammed smokers into corners, and its just not fair. we are playing by cruise line rules and paying just as much as u so why be punished ? there are lots of non smoking areas on board and in the Casio...and you dont have to pass though there if you dont want too. just saying and not being rude

Unfortunately on the new builds the casinos are open air and the smoke filters out way way too far from the casino

The casinos are actually beautifully designed and it's obvious the ships want to show them off so more pax will visit

All they need to do is install floor to ceiling plexiglas walls and cordon off a pathway thru the casino for the non smoking non gamblers to walk thru

It's disgusting that there is a massive main important venue such as the casino that non smoking pax can even look at let alone walk thru with risking their health

Btw I would actually gamble if there was a totally smoke free walled off area and since I doubt I'd win anything the ship would be the winner

As it stands now I just don't spend much onboard at all. Now if I could peacefully gamble that's another story

  6. Where indeed? They're not there because remedying this would cost more for your vacation. And I while I did say the cruise lines don't care about this, it really is that since there is no regulatory requirement, they see this as a personal choice of the passengers, smoke or don't, go into a smoky casino or don't. And, no, they won't do anything about indoor smoking until there is a visible result to their bottom line caused by folks not buying cruises because of smoke.

And, why hypocritical? The vast majority of the world still allows smoking in public spaces and indoor spaces. If you travel to another country, do you expect them to ban smoking indoors just because it's that way in the US? Again, if you want to enjoy US environmental mores on a cruise ship, travel on a US flag ship. Don't try to push US culture on the rest of the world, that's what makes us unwanted by the rest of the world.

I've traveled all over the world but will not go to Asia due to smoking issues there but I digress

However even in Rome these days smoking in public spaces is quite diminished and never an issue finding smoke free space indoor or outdoor at restaurants.

It's only going to take another half a generation or so in the USA based cruises to eliminate all smoking anyway but of course they need to allow for the foreign crew to have a well vented space to smoke but that will be away from pax anyway

The older generation will die off and the average logical 20 to 40 something doesn't smoke anyway. Key word is logical but add in educated as well.

Funny though the one thing rarely mentioned is that the ships officers are well known smokers so that's also part of the reason/problem that casino smoking is so pervasive and non playing smokers aren't told to stop

The agenda is oh so obvious

  7. Ok you know what I'm saying....the thread title is ...air quality(pollution) on a cruise ship

It says ON a ship not in the water around the ship but I realize everyone is going that route...but to keep with the threads title ...I honestly think that the ships are polluting their indoor space but do not care one bit because they don't have to care one bit about it

The only reason they do anything environmental regarding the seas is because they are being forced to.

Regardless of the flag the ship sails I find it amazing..albeit hypocritical..that most of the cruiselines still allow smoking in any indoor venue at all

Where are the environmental and human health watchdogs there?

Why aren't there groups that threaten to boycott cruising until all indoor space is smoke free on all ships

Where are the FB pages encouraging this?

Where are the protesters at the port reminding the pax of the cancer causing situations in ship casinos?

If They can protest outside of a circus about an elephant they can protest a cruiseline that allows casino or any indoor smoking. The chances are that any given pax is in more danger walking through the casino than they are if a plastic straw goes overboard.

Cheng....at least you agree that the cruiselines just don't care and aren't doing anything about indoor smoking

  8. Are you talking about personally testing, or professional testing and monitoring?

Personal testing, sure, if you don't mind packing your portable gas chromatograph and mass spectrometer to analyse the air.

Not sure how you "check the fire hazard" from smoking other than to say it is the same for smoking in any building.

Actually professional testing would be the way to do it

As for fire hazard that seems simple enough but of course someone trained in workplace/public space hazardous conditions would be the one to do it

Perhaps look at the combustible material spots versus the casino crowding or the intensity of the smoke haze or even something as simple as wall grime from smoke residue or what happens should a cig spark a fire

You know exactly what I'm getting at

My point is that it's rather interesting that the cruiselines aren't one bit concerned with the peripheral hazards that interior ship casino smoking can easily cause which would put the entire ship in grave danger

But at least no more plastic straws and they encourage us to use the same bath towel for 3 days straight

  9. My thinking was that the travel agent had a last second suite cancellation but had someone willing to pay for the spa mini suite (not the suite). With the sailing in about 24 hours, someone desperately wanted to fill the empty suite. The solution would have been to slide someone in a spa mini suite into the empty suite and sell the now empty spa mini suite.

  10. So mad right now. TA called back. He missed a couple of zeros. It's 4500.00 not $45.00. Wow how do you mess that up. Very disappointed. Really kind of mad. He also missed out on an M6 for us on Tuesday.

I figured that out after I read the 1st post

I'm actually surprised the posters even remotely thought it was $45

Ccers are usually much more astute ..

  11. Dream on. Now smoke free casinos fleetwide is more realistic.

    I totally agree.

The cruise ship operators are really upsetting the majority of their pax by still allowing any smoking at all in an indoor venue. I.e. The casino

In this day and age where everything has to be PC it's insulting that the ships still allow indoor smoking even if just in the casino

Shows how much they consider their pax health and well being especially since so few pax actually smoke

It just appears that lots of pax smoke because they all pack into the casino to smoke not gamble

Disclaimer: don't say go sail on X because I shouldn't have to do that unless I want to. What needs to happen is to eliminate smoking at all indoor venues on all ships on all lines. However I would actually concede to a additional smoking casino as long as it was in a remote corner of the ship and not near anyplace any pax would want to go to and that it was totally vented out to sea and not waifing back into a 3 story atrium near food venues

  12. I agree 100% ..we pay fare just the same as you....so why should be not be treated the same..already pushed into small areas,

Well most casinos are not small closed off spaces

They are now massive open air spaces that are in the middle level of an open air atrium so the smoke goes throughout the ship there is no denying that

On the ncl getaway/breakaway etc several venues are filled with smoke because of this ....shops...le bistro..headliners etc

I'm done with ncl and if my next cruise on the navigator is smoke filled I will go to celebrity and yes I know who owns celebrity

  13. If you were old enough you probably would have used the term at some time in the distant past. No one who says it means it as a racial slur.

I hear they are now using the term Indigenous Peoples

No more Indian or Native American

Fwiw...I've never heard the term "Indian giving" used by anyone older than a 10yo. It was odd to hear the op use it.

Also I haven't even heard a 10yo use that term in decades.

Op really? Just wondering did you say that to the rccl rep on the phone?

  14. Well, the already "won" me as a loyal customer. I have almost no interest in sailing another cruise line. I have had great experiences on NCL and there are still plenty of ships and itineraries for me to check out. Since there is ZERO doubt in my mind that I will be sailing NCL many more times in the next four years, it's a no-brainer.

I thought the same way...especially after my last several ncl cruises which were wonderful...until...I went to book April 2019 and saw how much ncl raised their prices...and how bad the itins were..

So I'll keep my last cert on my ncl account and perhaps I'll use it before oct 2020...if not I have family to offer it to etc....or...I'll just let it expire

Booked rccl btw...longer cruise better itin and they serve real escargot I hear not the chopped up with mushroom kind lime ncl does. Lol

  15. Really was surprised to see it said Newfoundland. Never been there, but from what I have heard, there isn't much to do there.

My plane from Spain was grounded in gander Newfoundland. Don't recall why as it was back in 1979.

I still get eerie feeling about that airport as it was unusual to me

I hear the people there a very hospitable though

  16. I'm sorry but anyone that sees an unoccupied chair for 5 hours has every right to move the stuff for others or their own use

If the hogs come back just say the chair was empty

If you are the one moving the stuff after an appropriate period of time just neatly put the stuff in a corner. No need to put it under your chair or extremely close by

Just tell the hogs the deck crew told you the chair was vacant

Just tell the hogs the crew moved their stuff

Or now here is a great idea...

Neatly fold their stuff in a corner...then move the chair

How exactly would they know it was their chair as they all look alike.

This is not brain surgery folks nor is it bad behavior on your part

If a hog is gone for hours there is no way they would even know what transpired or how many other pax used that same chair in those hours

  17. lol I'm looking to see if I can cruise with an underseat roll on and a tote

I currently cruise with a 21 inch and tote but I hate it when the airlines force me to gate check it as I'm usually zone 7 of course I always beg the attendant to be sure it gets in the hole and last trip the attendant saw my anxiety and said she would make sure it did as she could see it go in.

It's not that I'm looking to travel with less luggage it's that I WANT to never let it out of my sight. Lol
