  1. Back on February 09 2020 Windsurf did a transit of the canal to Gatun lake and back out.
This was the first time Windsurf had transited the canal.
They had to make special arrangements for it to transit as they had to remove the lifeboats and add life rafts and add a metal hook to the stern so she could be hooked up to the Locomotives.
If you look at the attached photo you can see the davits where the lifeboats are supposed to be.

  2. The Minister of Health in BC has issued a Travel Warning on Cruising yesterday along with the Provincial Health Officer of BC.
The Health Officer has said there should be a delay in the season.

The Minister of Health in Canada has also issued the same warning.

Tomorrow Transport Canada is meeting with Cruise Lines tomorrow to discuss a delay in the start of the Alaska Season.

It may not matter what Hawaii does.

  3. I did this cruise last year.
Tokyo weather was sunny but cool.
It snowed in Hakodate 2 days before we arrived. The good news was the snow was gone and the Cherry Blossoms were in full bloom. The problem was it was Golden Week and lots of people. This year Golden week is before the cruise leaves.
Very sunny day in Hakodate and very nice.

The sail up to Russia was nice and sunny and the viewing of the snow covered mountains and volcano's was scenic.

Petropavlosk was sunny but cool to cold depending on the wind. There was snow still on the ground. Now the snow was black because it was covered in ash from the nearby Volcano's.

Coming across the Bearing Sea was cold and sunny with temps near 0 c for two days. The seas were not that bad.

The weather got better as we got closer to Vancouver Island. We had great weather in Victoria but that port is not happening this year.

  4. I Just came of the Transpacific on Millennium.

I attended a Lecture by the Staff Captain complete with photos etc. of what it took to do this refit.

First off with so many trades it became a problem that they had to work through because many were working on top of each other.
The idea was to redo 50 cabins a day at the start. They managed 5 on the first day and 10 or so on the second day. By the third day they were way behind.
They were also redoing crew cabins as well.
A hotel ship was brought to house the trades as well as some hotels were used.
Feeding all on board was a challenge because the dining rooms and ocean view cafe were being redone.
So this tells me that in order to finish on time many short cuts had to be taken in order to finish on time. They did not finish on time in the yard as they were working well into the first cruise. We were told of one couple who went to their cabin and opened the door to find no beds.

I had a Concierge Cabin that had problems.
-First 1/3 of the grout in the shower floor is gone. Talking to friends in the same class they had the exact same problem here.
-The desk that was installed had a screw that had come up through the top of it cracking the finish and now peeling.
-The bed light beside the bathroom is a high wall light that one has to get out of bed to turn off. God help you if you are short.
-The bedside table on the other side with the lamp with the plugs and USB plugs is basically useless. The phone sits in front of it and takes up the space. The phone has to be placed in the table to gain function. The phone in our case could not be moved to the other side of the bed because the cable was not long enough.
-When the cabins were stripped out they didn't bother to grind away ridges where other items had been causing high spots to if you were going to bed a stepped on them it would hurt.
-Paint over spray around doors etc. is seen through the ship.
-I also experienced an electrical short in the electrical panel to my cabin which resides in the AC duct in the hall. This panel was changed during drydock because USB plugs and new plugs were added. I found out that the while we slept that a fellow passenger pasted in the hall and smelt the electrical short and reported it. The Electrical staff came and fixed it.
The problem was the smell in the hall was so bad that one might think that the panel in the AC duct one would check on those inside the cabin. Didn't happen.
We wake up a couple of hours later to a real bad electrical burning smell to find the problem was back and not fixed earlier.
Over the course of the next couple of days our cabin had to have a deep clean twice.
And for our troubles they sent us 6 chocolate covered Strawberries (I have had cashews bigger)  and a bottle of Red Wine20190506_155926.thumb.jpg.935e0609b8764895b90eb46c93ee15ee.jpg
We had to laugh when we read the label....

We noticed in many places where there were benches that when you sat down you could not sit back against the wall because paintings were hung on the wall and they would be in the middle of your back.

The have done away with deck plans near the Elevators in favour of the Phone App. The phone App is not correct as our experience to find Tuscan took some time and not where the App said it was.
The phone app had a complete meltdown when we crossed the dateline. Things like reservations were changed to different days and in our case we had a card that showed one day and we went there to find our reservation was the next day.

The main dinning room was amazing but don't expect to find many table for 2 in a quite location.

We were told Summit was schedule for extra time  to solve some of these problems and I suspect each time they learn more. I suspect the first Solstice class ship will have similar problems.

They should also make those that do the designs to sail sail on a few cruise first so they know how things work.

    Just my 10 cent observation..

I am not sure if you know what you have done here, but here is a suggestion.

Don't post documents with your First and Last name.
My suggestion is go back and edit the original post and re-post the photos with the last names blacked out.
In your Avitar it shows your home town.
It won't take me more than 5 minutes to find where you live and your address. With this people know you are NOT at home and won't be home for some time.

You have just outed your friend too.

  6. Would you want to be waiting for a cab in Vancouver on a 3 cruise ship day? I wouldn't. especially if they are over 3000 capacity

Not a chance! I was there picking someone up last Sunday with Infinity and Westerdam in and what a zoo. No where enough taxis and it was Sunday.

  7. Here is the Joy's Transpacific itinerary I found on a TA's site.

    No prices yet.

  8. The Jewel cruises to/from Vancouver

Because of the Lions Gate Bridge the mega ships can't home port in Vancouver, there is talk of creating another cruise port in Metro Vancouver but it will be WAY out of downtown, closer to the airport will be appreciated by some, but that is years away, if it ever happens

That depends on what Mega ships you are talking about.

The Bliss is stopping in Vancouver on September 30th, and yes she fits under the Lions Gate Bridge.

The Solstice also fits as she had a funnel mod done so she can fit. Not sure if the Eclipse has had the mod or not or is going to have it.

The Ovation OTS is also scheduled here in 2019 and is also suppose to fit.

  9. Not many venues... One additional venue which I think was the bottom of the nightclub? More Asian gambling and no craps, so they will need to change out tables. We were on Mariner in Asia the end of last year and she was perfect. Except for the Asian staff, not much has changed. We were also on the cruise across to Asia from Houston but disembarked in Dubai. I don't recall everyone being 'Livid' and everyone we got to know had a fantastic cruise. We were more livid about a wasted turn around day in Barcelona that was chaos do to disorganization.

The D Lounge was changed to a High Rollers lounge but that has been changed back and we enjoyed that. The Pub is back. I think everyone will be surprised how 'normal' Mariner actually is.

I just returned from the Mariner and it was not "normal" by a long shot.

Let's see the onboard shop was on deck 4 and had just a few items, and I do mean a few.

The entertainment for the most part was not up to par.

The Food in the Main dining room had a Asian flavour and what western food had no taste.

Carpet is very well worn in many locations and the seats in the main show room are in need of recovering. I visited several cabins and the carpet is badly stained in all of them.

There was a very bad musty smell on decks 8,9,10 forward stairwell area.

Smoking is the whole length of the pool deck on one side.

Many signs by the Elevators are in Mandarin only.

Oh yes and western health standards were not enforced at all. They allowed the filling of water bottles and when questioned it was basically that is how it is here in Asia. When a Doctor questioned the Health Standards he was put off the ship in Japan.

  10. I just booked a cruise 2 weeks ago from Canada in CAD. I applied for the $250 OBC and sent a email off (on a Sunday even though it says Monday to Friday) and 5 minutes later I got a reply saying that the credit was applied. It is on my account and now used.

I had friend who applied from Canada that booked with a US TA in USD and was denied the credit because the group that the TA had put together had "Perks" and thus no credit. No double dipping.

I think it is crap shoot on how this works on any given day or who you get.

  11. Agreed!!! The issue is the browser not the website... I found this out while using chrome.. after the first few times I couldn't access the search engine .. switched to explorer and no problem at all.. chrome works fine to look at my reservations but not to search a cruise...

So please tell me how a Browser will fix a problem with RCI website when the set-sail pass has the cruise finishing 3 days before it really does?

How about crossing the Date line and the cruise shows 23 days when it is a 24 day cruise. Also with this came the fact that in North America the cruise was to finish on the 16th and on the Ozzie site it showed the 17th. Those in OZ phoned RCI and were told it does finish in Seattle on the 17th .....Australia time.... Some people got caught on this because their return flights were booked for the 17th not the 16th when the ship arrived.

What about showing dinner shore excursions (about 8 of them) and selling them for the night the ship leaves for the cruise at 5:00PM?

What about linking cabins and TA's not able to access your reservation? This is still a problem? Oh yes I have found that if cabins are linked one can see all the information of any cabins that are linked. I do believe this problem has been fixed, finally.

How about No Visa information for the port agent in India and calling them only made the matter worse.

Have you ever been in your reservation and had RCI call you asking you to log out because they need to access your reservation? I have, and it is still a problem today. I consider this one rather funny.

How about the website showing one price and calling your TA shows that price doesn't exist, yet you have a screen shot showing it does?

Would you like me to go on?

I have spent hours with the Vice Presidents Office of IT as they are upgrading the system fleet wide "next" year at a huge cost telling them of the problems. All problems I have stated have been verified by them and I was getting daily calls asking me to check to see if the problem was solved. Some problems could not be solved because the system is so old.

Oh yes I was never told what year the upgrade would be completed.

Do these sound like browser problems to you?

  12. Then why would the website still show cabins available?

I can see why cruisers would be upset with work being done while on the cruise, it was very unsettling for us on NCL Sun when carpets were being replaced by workers for 3 days. The workers had protection, we had a bad cough.

Note the post on RCI - IT department.

They had our cruise ending 3 days before we arrived in our final port. Never did get fixed.

I could go on but RCI - IT Department is in need of a make over that they say is coming next year, they just didn't say what year...
