  1. We've cruised out of Port Everglades several times, and have always parked in the lots close by or adjacent to the specific terminal. When we leave the parking attendant takes down license plate number, and the disabled parking permit (state issued) number. They may or may not do a cursory look to see if the vehicle is modified. Never had a problem, never had to pay. I've never been able to make arrangements ahead of time, though.

Edited to add: We sailed out of Terminal 2 on Princess. If I recall, we parked in a parking garage close by the terminal.

  2. We have a cruise on Serenade of the Seas coming up in about a month, out of Port Everglades. From what I gather on the RCCL boards, more than likely the ship will be leaving out of one terminal and returning to a different one. I'm at a loss as to what to do if that happens. We are driving my wheelchair accessible van to the port, and I assume, parking near the terminal.

I use an electric power chair, and cannot stand or walk at all. I'm hoping someone will have some advice on how to get our luggage, and me back to our van, if that happens. I'm assuming that the distance between terminals is too far to walk, and probably not safe for pedestrians either.

  3. Courtesy of the Royal Caribbean website, these are the non-accessible features on Allure.

I'm pretty sure all the ports you mentioned are docked, as opposed to tendered, so you should be able to go ashore. Sometimes the gangway can be a little steep, but there are crew available to help maneuver the wheelchair.

  4. We're booked on an 11 night Southern Caribbean cruise on Serenade of the Seas in 2018. My first question is, does Serenade have a Promenade Deck, one that wraps around most, if not all, of the perimeter of the ship? The promenade deck of any cruise ship is almost always my favorite spot.

My second question is, are there automatic doors to the outside areas on the pool deck and the promenade deck? We just got back from a cruise on the Coral Princess, and the pool deck had really high door threshholds and no automatic doors to the outside. I use a wheelchair and have very limited arm strength, so I was never able to go outside unless my husband was with me.

Just curious to know in advance. Thank you for any help you all can give me.

  5. Our first cruise was on the Dawn Princess way back in 1997. Now after all these years we are sailing on the Coral Princess in precisely 15 days, 4 hours, 5 minutes, and an unknown number of seconds. Pretty much all I think about is cruise-related. The anticipation is one of my favorite parts of the whole cruise experience.

  6. There are wheelchair accessible taxi's in Fort Lauderdale. Just do a GOOGLE search using the key phrase "Wheelchair Accessible Taxis in Fort Launderdale"

If flying to FFL once at the airport if you have have not prearranges accessible transportation all you have to do is speak to the taxi dispatcher curbside.

If the Hotel provides shuttle service for abled bodied guests than per ADA it must provide accessible services for your step-father. However it's important to note that if the Hotel charges for shuttle services it must charge the same fee for the accessible transporation regardles of what it costs the Hotel. If the shuttle service is provided free of charge than it has to provide accessible transportation free of charge regardless of what the it costs the hotel. You're best to speak directly to the Hotel Manager rather than the a hotel phone rep and or front desk personnel.

I know this is correct, but personally, I have not found any Hotel Manager willing to make this service available. In Washington D.C., we were flat out told that the hotel is not obligated to provide this service. Short of getting into a debate, I'm at a loss as how to react.

  7. This is a problem for me at every hotel I use. A bed height of 21-23 inches is almost unheard of, at least in my experience. And some hotels aren't exactly helpful about getting that information for you. What we have started doing is staying at places where there is a sofa sleeper available. Unfortunately, you pay more for the room.

    It's annoying and frustrating.

  8. Good point ! Though rent a scooter and don't bring mine from home , my friends who do bring their own scooters and wheelchairs were not allowed to do self embark on RCCL, Princess as well as Holland America. They were told it was unsafe due to able body people stampeding the gangway and it would actually slow down the entire process. They were the very next group after self disembark to leave because they did not need assistance from the crew. Kind of guessing NCL would be that same way.

We also were not allowed to do self disembark on Celebrity Sihouette. DH wanted to try (I didn't) but the cruise line said no.
