  1. Most of the models I was looking at were showing the bulk starting late Saturday and running steadily through Wednesday. It just bombed out and dropped the entire three days of rain forecast in one night last night. We've gone from 25" of rain forecast to 50" now by the end of the week. But winds and seas were always going to make the port questionable. So, yeah, they were hoping for a forecast bust so they could cycle through to the next cruise.

On Thursday, there was some lady spreading rumours on social media about how the govt officials are lying to everyone cause they don't want to cause a panic and that we're gonna get 50' of rain and not 25'. It was quickly denounced by state and city officials. Looks like she may be right.

  2. My parents are on the liberty. They plan to drive back toward branson mo when they disembark. Do you think they would be better to stay on the ship tonight - if given the opportunity? I am concerned about them trying to drive in this but also concerned about it getting worse than it is even today.

Tell them do not drive, they wouldn't be able to pass anyways. Stay on the ship or find a safe hotel in Galveston and stay awhile. The idea of driving through Houston is insane right now.

  3. We (Liberty) are offshore outside the port waiting for them to clear us in. The port was doing an inspection this morning at 6:00AM and our ability to dock is being discussed on a conference call at 9:00AM.

Here are the conditions we're in. It looks worse than it is the ship has remained incredibly smooth.

They told us to put our luggage out last night and then told us to bring it back in. Assuming we dock today anyone who wants to can use the ship as a hotel for Sunday night. They expect to sail a shortened cruise departing Monday afternoon.

People with RCI air/transfers have to stay on the ship tonight becaue no motorcoaches are available as they are being used by emergency services.

    Good times.

Good God, is Royal Caribbean even paying attention to what's going on? Or are they literally still planning on sending people into danger and say you're on your own. Even if you guys are getting off the ship, you won't be going anywhere. We have historic flooding everywhere.

  4. Despite some disagreement in "that other thread"...your points are well taken.

That said...the situation if fluid, and there is no doubt continued confusion and changes are forthcoming - and not just from one company.

Royal's announcement post about Galveston still showing this morning:

    August 26, 2017

Carnival's comparable announcement this morning on their website:

    WEATHER UPDATE #5 – 08/26/17 – 1:00 PM (EST)

There doesn't seem to be a monopoly on mixed messages or confusion...which given the conditions...isn't much of a surprise.

Hopefully you get to finally enjoy your surprise cruise very soon - best wishes.

Yea well, sane people have already cancelled their Carnival Breeze cruise for future cruises 36 hours ago and not even worrying about it at this point. It only took a quick phone call, and they didn't have to prove nothing to Carnival either about whether they can make it to port or not.

  5. Anyone have any insight into RCI Liberty of the Seas? They keep insisting they're on schedule but they're clearly not and most flights (including mine and other family members) to Houston have been cancelled. We're a party of 20 coming from 4 different locations and are seriously stressing! It seems incredibly irresponsible for them to not cancel - people are trying to fly and drive into unsafe conditions. HELP PLEASE! thanks in advance :)

Liberty of the Seas just announced they will push back departure by 1 day. They will refund 1 day of cruise fare + 25% future cruise credit.

  6. I grew up in Miami. Do you know how many false or innacurate landing and aftermath predictions I've been through?

Some here aren't happy unless everyone in this thead is at level nine anxiety.

Barry, just so you know I'm in Sugar Land TX right now experiencing the band that's headed toward Galveston. We already had tornado touch down nearby just 10 minutes ago. Torrential downpours, and tons of thunder and lightning. I'm experiencing it right now.

  7. We're close and the seas are very calm.

Based on your current position and current radar map, yes you're in a area that's currently calm. But you need to look at the radar future. There's a nasty band headed toward Galveston right now, will probably be there late tonight. And it's showing heavy rain through tomorrow. You're in southeast of Galveston, theres nothing at all going on there, everythings comong in from the west. There's a reason why the captain stopped there.

  8. Lol a quick look at Cruisefan0001's profile, you can tell he/she is a huge RCL loyalist who probably won't even consider sailing with other lines. Thus the need to defend RCL so much. I've seen plenty of these kind of brand loyalists everywhere. Playstation vs Xbox, Honda vs Toyota, etc. You pretty much cannot say anything negative about their favorite brand, it's almost like saying something bad about their mother or child.

  9. I would agree with this post if all things were equal.....meaning both cruise lines had ships coming in at the same time. But they didn't. Carnival had 2 other ships scheduled to port in Galveston days before RCI's ship was scheduled. This meant Carnival had to make a quicker decision. Comparing CCL's to RCI's reactions to this dilemma really is an apples to oranges comparison.

Ok so then even taking the Freedom and Valor out of the equation since they were supposed to come in today. Carnival also gave their customers for the Breeze (which sails tomorrow just like RCL) the same offer. They could've easily just said we will do this for just the Saturday sailings but treat their Breeze passengers the same way Royal treated their Liberty passengers thus far, with uncertainty and anxiety.

  10. Here is the latest projected paths on our News channel here in San Antonio: took this with my phone

    ab712x.jpg

None of them show the path getting near Houston/Galveston

Yes but Houston/Galveston is on the dirty side (east side) of the storm. The line you see not hitting houston is just center of the storm. We're still getting all the rain with this track.

  11. I guess I don't understand the argument that the cruise line owes you something if your flight is cancelled and the cruise ship is able to dock, or or that the cruise line owes you something if you choose to fly into a hurricane situation and the ship isn't able to dock. Neither the cruise line or the airline has any control over the other's decisions. To expect either of these independent companies to reimburse you for a decision made by the other is unreasonable. That's why you purchase travel insurance to cover these types of unexpected situations.

Yes, the cruise line does not owe him anything. But they can easily show good customer service and be sympathetic to the situation. RCL is not showing any sympathy at all right now. As I said earlier, as soon as Carnival gave their customers yesterday the option to cancel for future cruise credit. RCL should've done the same thing. People pay attention to these gestures and will remember these when booking in the future. It also make good business sense for RCL to give their customers this option under the current circumstances. I guarantee you he is one of at least a few hundred customers in the same delimma right now. Royal Caribbean needs to step up to the plate.

  12. I think in the end, one thing RCL should've done regardless of what they're planning to do with the next Liberty sailing was to allow passengers who wants to cancel or switch cruises do so and give cruise credits just like Carnival. I thought they really dropped the ball on that one. Especially after Carnival announced they would do this.

  13. From what I can tell, the reports that the port is shut through Tuesday all stem from a statement from one port authority representative this afternoon in an uncertain context (I haven't been able to find the direct quote). However, none of the actual Port of Galveston or City of Galveston information says the same thing, nor do any of the cruiseline statements.

I'm surprised, though, that ship left Cozumel for Galveston if they didn't have some reason to believe they could dock before Tuesday.

Well Royal probably didn't want to keep paying port of Cozumel and rather just sit at Sea if they can't get in Galveston. Someone on the Liberty earlier said they saw trucks unloading things onto the ship at Cozumel port. So the captain probably know himself they might be at Sea for awhile but was instructed not to notify the passengers yet just in case.
