Oh, yes, the Latin scholars, they do that. I had a history teacher who had also studied Latin and met a priest. Their only common language was Latin, so they used it. I never got good enough to use it in a modern way, but it was very useful for handling other languages.

I studied Latin throughout high school and majored in Spanish and minored in Latin at university. I do think the Latin helped with the Romance languages. If we do our bucket list cruise Bucharest to Budapest, I’ll be curious to see how much Romanian I can understand. Of course, Hungarian is a total mystery!

@jpalbny, I've been doing the same through Duolingo.  I have one set of parents who are Swiss, and speak German...he says I'm not doing to badly with the pronunciation.    One of our "goals" is to take a month and travel by train to areas in Germany and Austria.  We loved what we saw on our Rhine cruise.  Just trying to get the basics in so I can make myself (partially) understood.

I used my rudimentary Duolingo German to help my husband buy toothpaste in a pharmacy in Speyer and my French to shop in a department store in Rouen.

  3. Yes, Duolingo is a free online learning site. I’ve used it for years, partly to keep my brain cells working! I learned a tiny bit of Welsh and some German before traveling in Wales and Germany, but I’ve concentrated on French. I’m fairly fluent in Spanish and occasionally by mistake use a Spanish instead of French word. I’m also watching the comedy “Dix pour Cent” or “Call My Agent” on Netflix. It’s subtitled in English but I enjoy understanding more and more of the French as I continue watching it.

  4. We’re looking at Tauck’s Black Sea  to Budapest itinerary, maybe in 2022. Wondering about May vs  late August/early Sept., if water levels would be more of a concern in one season or the other. Hard to predict, of course. We’ve done one excellent land tour with Tauck (Costa Rica). Other lines do the Danube itinerary but we prefer Tauck’s itinerary for this one.

I would expect that lots of things won't be back to normal in Canada at the end of May. Most people will not yet have been vaccinated, and it is unclear how much will be open here in Ontario (which is the only Canadian province on the Great Lakes).

At the moment, everyone arriving by air is subject to testing and quarantining. There is some discussion about testing at land borders too, although no mention of arriving by water.

Very few things are back to anything near normal in the province. While there is talk about reopening beginning shortly, particularly in areas less affected by Covid, but the greater Toronto area is likely to remain under certain restrictions for some time.

What were you expecting to do on your stops? That might make a difference as to what you should do, however, if you can delay the cruise until 2023 before making final payment that is what I would probably do.

I very much suspect we will decide to delay.

The Canadian Govt has put a ban on all ships over 100 people.  That would include crew.  With our quarantine regulations, I doubt very much you would be able to go ashore either.  If they are still running the cruise, you may only be on the American side of the lakes for any excursions.

I had thought about that being a possibility. Would definitely cancel if that’s the case.

  7. Received this yesterday for a cruise we have booked, embarking May 30 on the Great Lakes. I had first vaccine dose a few days ago, DH will this afternoon. We're still iffy about proceeding with final payment at end of March. No refund offered, just voucher. Watching and waiting!

    Dear Guest,

Yesterday the Canadian Government extended an interim order that affects many cruise ships operating in Canada. The order allows for the operation of small cruise ships. Your cruise with Pearl Seas is still scheduled to operate. We are excited to have you onboard and we appreciate your patience as we work with Transport Canada to understand this order and its effects.

Pearl Seas Cruises remains committed to offer you options for travel and we are happy to make two new announcements to provide you with additional flexibility for your future travel.

We are now offering our Cruise with Comfort to all guests with existing bookings for cruises departing in 2021. This offer allows guests the ability to cancel their cruise for any reason up to 24 hours prior to the start of their Cruise Package and receive Cruise Vouchers equal to 100% of Amounts Paid. Cruise with Comfort details and terms are available here.

We are particularly excited to announce enhancements to our Cruise Vouchers that now allow them to be used with our affiliate American Cruise Lines. American Cruise Lines offers more than 35 unique itineraries in the U.S.A. aboard the most sophisticated fleet of modern riverboats and small cruise ships in the country. In addition, we are extending the date Cruise Vouchers can be used by one year to 12/31/2022. We will be following up shortly with additional details about the enhancements to our Cruise Vouchers. Details and terms on Cruise Vouchers are available here.

If you have any questions regarding your current reservation, Cruise with Comfort, Cruise Vouchers, or the options available to you at present, our Cruise Specialists will be happy to be of assistance. They may be reached at (800) 981-9146.

Whether you travel on the Pearl Mist or one of the fine ships of American Cruise Lines, we look forward to welcoming you onboard.

  8. That was fast Renmar!  Your turn.

The statue is of a Beguine, a member of a Catholic lay sisterhood, founded in 1346. The present Begijnhof features a peaceful green courtyard and houses from the 17th and 18th centuries, plus one built much earlier, predating the 1521 ban on wooden houses, to reduce the risk of fire. The houses were used by many generations of sisters, the last of whom died in 1971. Today 100 single women enjoy a peaceful place to live there, in the middle of the busy city. That’s my contribution to the history lessons. 🙂

  9. Thanks to everyone for the Dutch and Viking history lessons. I learned so much from you!  We, took, had drinks with the Princess at the family castle on the Danube. We also enjoyed the ancient history section of the Louvre.  During our last visit there, we hit the painting gallery first and left as soon as the crowds were intolerable.  We had been there before so didn't feel the need to linger, and headed to the north wing, where we had the galleries almost to ourselves. I'm reading the book The Louvre by James Gardner, which traces the history of the Louvre from its earliest times to the present. May have more than you might have wanted to know, but I find it quite interesting.  I'm only at the time the Sun King added so much to it.

Here's a wild card photo, unless someone beats me to posting a new photo:

Name the river, city and location in the city.
