  1. While I understand the disappointment that most experienced by not getting a full cruise, I think some are unable to see the logics nightmare this was for Carnival. They hoped to get the ship sailing again.but had no assurance that they would get USCG approval. They needed to have a contingency plan for getting 3000 passengers back home. In the corporate world this is called a "fluid" situation. There were no definite right answers. MdChris didn't say if all there party was going to the same final destination? They had to figure how many people were going where and charter and route flights based on that. Maybe I see things different because I deal with contingency and disaster planning and know, no matter how well you plan, things can and will still go astray. I am sure that Carnival first choice was to keep passengers onboard, but that would of been suicidal had they waited to Friday or Saturday to start flying people of St. Thomas. Unfortunately this was not about mbchris's party or any other single party, it was about 3000+ people.

  2. On Adventure of the Seas? I was on RCI's site the other day and saw it was sold out. This is just speculation so don't take my word for it, but it could be rooms that travel agents booked ahead of time that they weren't able to sell, so they released back to RCI (???). Do you know, off hand, what the itinerary is? I forgot to look that up the other day. Hopefully you won't need to book it and we'll all be sailing on Liberty on the 20th. :)

I know TAs hold rooms because we have a TA on our Allure of Seas boards that still has several balconies available even though RC shows everything except suites as sold out on the their website for our cruise in November. I would image that at some point the TA has to either book the cabin or return it to the cruise line.

The AOS itinerary we did last March was St. Thomas, St Kitts, Aruba and Curacau.

  3. If you are every looking for something fun and interesting to do in St. Thomas I recommend Magic Ice. it is right next to Pizza Hut on the main shopping drag (21 Dronningens Gade). It is a bar/ice sculpture gallery. It is a $19 cover charge and that covers your your parka, gloves and leggings, your shot of Cruzan Rum and a free souvenir shot glass. It is very easy to kill and hour or so without realizing it Magic Ice.

  4. Like you, we're also stressed waiting to hear whether we will be cruising on the 20th or not. And just a few days ago our concerns were weather, specifically hurricanes. We are pretty much in the same situation, non refundable plane tickets and have decided to spend the time in PR if our sailing would happen to be cancelled. I've talked to DH and he suggested waiting to see for sure whether we will be cruising or not before jumping the gun and booking the hotel for a week, but I'm afraid that would be too late. I told him I think we should book, let the hotel know the reason and see if they could tentatively book without penalty for cancellation if the cruise goes on as scheduled. I'm sure there are many others on our sailing with non-refundable airfare that might also be looking for a place to stay in PR for the week.

This is why we always buy full insurance on a cruise. Even with non-refundable airfare, the insurance would pay for it should the cruise be cancelled by Carnival. I think I paid just at $100 for full insurance on our cruise on the Valor out of San Juan two years ago. Didn't need it but it was nice knowing that we had it. We always budget insurance into out trip cost.

  5. Last September when we went we had no issue getting a taxi van for the six of us. We forgot about the hour time difference so we actually showed up an hour early to Nachi. They let us in to find our loungers, and then just asked us to pay once they were fully open. They are very welcoming no matter what time you get there.

  6. And if you buy the small bottles, they consider them Souvenirs and you don't have to turn them in. On the Adventure of the Seas last March, in Curacao, both my wife and I bought two of the six pack samplers at the Curacao liquor factory and were allowed to bring them back to our cabin. In this case they actually were souvenirs for our daughters and friends, but we could have just as easily got mixers with our soda card and made our own drinks in our cabin.

  7. We normally stay at either the Marriott Springhill or the Comfort Suites in Fort Lauderdale. Depends on whether we are using my wife's point or mine. The Comfort Suites is newly remodeled about 4 years ago and is still looking nice. Staff has always been extremely friendly and helpful. It is convenient to lots of restaurants and grocery stores. The Springhill is a bit nicer, but only has a few choices for meals within easy walking distance. Comfort Suites has a port shuttle for a nominal fee (Was $6 pp last time I checked). The Springhill shuttle is complementary. Both are close enough to the port that a taxi might also be another option. If you are cruising out of Port of Miami, but staying the night in Fort Lauderdale, I recommend SAS transportation to get you from Fort Lauderdale down to the pier.

I recommend checking TripAdviser.com for reviews of any hotel. Just remember to throw out the " this hotel can do no wrong and is the best in the world" reviews along with the "I wouldn't let my dog stay here". Look at the well written, thoughtful reviews and see which way they lean.

  8. I use the Southwest card. I put most everything I can on it. Most of what I put on it is business expenses that are reimbursed. I have been averaging 4 free flights a year for the past four years. Those four free flights are well worth the $79 fee. My wife also has the Southwest card and she hit companion status one year and I flew free with her for an entire year. For us the perks are well worth the small fee.

  9. We were just at Nachi Cocum last Monday, Sept 15. We loved it. Very nice and quite. Drinks were good and food was unbelievable. Just a note: they open at 9 AM local time, which is Central time. We were on the Carnival Glory out of Miami, so we were on Eastern Time. We showed up at 9 and we were allowed in, but had to wait for the bar to open. I highly recommend the strawberry Margaritas. I was never crazy about Cozumel as a port, but this experience has changed my mind. Looking forward to taking our two daughters to Nachi Cocum on a short weekend cruise out of New Orleans in the new year. I give it a 10 out of 10.

  10. We always buy travel insurance from a third party. You can customize the insurance and it will cover more than just the cruise. I use http://www.insuremytrip.com. You put in your information and it will give you a large number of companies and policies to choose from. Each company is rated and most have reviews. Great thing about using insuremytrip is that you can choose from a bar minimum policy upto a complete umbrella policy and every thing in between.

  11. I always check before signing. Have noticed a couple of times they have rung up the wrong drinks on the cards. Usually find it in the theater and in the comedy club, where the waiters are taking multiple orders at one time. No matter where, I always verify before signing.

  12. Fort Lauderdale Transfers will pick up earlier on request.

We used them in Feb, and requested a 9:30am pickup. So done else in our hotel was using them and asked for a 9am pickup. They called us to see if we could be ready earlier, and we were just getting ready to checkout, so we jumped on the earlier van. Wish they would have called us sooner, though, but it still all worked out.

We used Jiffy Jeff for the return trip. He was great, and he was in constant contact with MJS and other vans. He said they all work together, especially on the. Busiest days, to make sure everyone gets taken care of expeditiously.

I tried to reserve a shuttle for 9:30 AM from the Comfort Suites in FLL to POM. We are traveling with another couple so the reservation was for four. We all have FTTF, so we wanted an early arrival at the pier. Earliest MJS would guarentee is 11, although they could try to have a van there around 10:30 AM.

Thinking I will look for someone else.

  13. In September we were on the Valor and had a starboard side balcony and we were pier side for all ports except San Juan and St. Kitts. But that is not a given on every cruise as the harbor master has final say on how the ships dock based on the days arrivals. It really is a crap shoot.

  14. May have an issue with them. I called two weeks ago and I was told they would pickup at a Fort Lauderdale hotel starting at 9:30 AM, half hour earlier than SAS. This is great since both us and our friends we are cruising with have FTTF for our Carnival Glory cruise. Got around to making reservations on-line this week and my confirmation says they will pick us up at the hotel at 11:AM. We won't be too the boat till noon. That kinda of kills the whole FTTF thing. Hope to call and clarify on Monday. May end up going with SAS if MJS won't pickup earlier than 11:00.

  15. After reading all the great reviews I booked Nachi Cocom.

I was wondering is it safe to have ice cubes in your drinks? It's the drinking water ok?

Do we need to worry about getting a stomach bug?

    Thanks

    Lynn

Why would you want to water down a perfectly good drink with ice? :p

  16. Looking forward to this in september. Our cruise friends recommended it and we reserved today. Sounds marvelous as we prefer a quiet beach and drinks to excursions and partying.

  17. If you actually go to the link and read the financial summary you will see that it is for Carnival Corp, not Carnival Cruise Line. And there biggest loss was $17 M on fuel derivatives. Derivatives are always a crap shoot. Had fuel prices not declined, Carnival would not of been showing a loss. And the financial is only for Q1. The two quarters which include summer months will show improved income and most likely a lower ratio on the fuel. Let's see what the year end statement says.
