  1. Hi

So I booked a South American cruise for March of 2019, as a possible vacation. It's still over two years away. It is a 14 day cruise trip from Buenos Aires, Argentina to Santiago, Chile. I've never been to South America. Here are the ports, (not including the city of arrival and departure):

    01) Montevideo, Uruguay.

    02) Puerto Madryn.

    03) Falkland Islands.

    04) Ushuais, Agentina.

    05) Puenta Arenas, Chile.

    06) Puerto Chacabuco.

    07) Puerto Montt.

Please excuse any spelling errors. My questions are directed towards NCL people, etc. who have been to these ports. I have been doing homework on the ports but your help would be greatly appreciated also.

    01) If I did not buy any shore excursions from the ship. Will there be vendors at each of these ports that offer excursions?

    02) I understand that some ports like the one outside of Rome, Italy are far away from where the ship docks. Is this the case with any of the above ports?

I know the questions are related to people mainly who have been there. Thank you for any help.

    Craig

It's 15 years old but you might glean some information from our review...Some ports change little in S.A.

Click on my name and then ...."Statistics"....then all ......"THREADS"..... 'started' by seashells.

We did a 30 day around S.A. long ago on NCL.

  2. H anyone just purchased on board credit certificates thru ncl.com and used these to pay for any charges?

Yes. They will go towards your bill...

You will however pay a 3% interest charge if you try and transfer any to the casino.

    Take cash for that purpose.

You can also purchase a prepaid CC and use that to pay your account and not use/give them your normal CC or debit card.

  3. I don't know where my mind was when I thought the 3% would be charged to my CC....We just returned when I saw this post....We also had pre-paid for what we wanted including the tips.

Of course NCL takes the 3%...It sat there on my account and about the third day I took it out at the machine.

When you go into the machine (there is a button with 3 buttons at the bottom or somewhere) You push the largest of the three then up pops a screen where they want your pin number....Well your pin number is the ...day you were born and the year... you were born ...as NCL has that info on you....The gift card amount will show up and you can take it all at one time or a little at a time....Taking a little at a time you have to use the pin number again and again.

If you don't know the info on ...CASHING OUT FIRST...At ALL TIMES....then take out your card...Someone in the casino comes over to show you....Well now "they" know your birth info.

If you don't use a casino card or your cabin card...The machine will kick out your ticket.

You can give them a pre-paid CC if you don't want to give them the CC you use all the time for expenses bought on the ship.

I gave them the CC at check-in as a backup, but the casino paid my bill at the end of the cruise so it was worth the 3%.

  4. Hold the Evian bottle in front of the mirror and read the label.

You are missing the point in re the water. They cannot stock a decent selection of beer which could actually satisfy a lot of people. Taking the effort and space to stock a selection of bottled water would be as stupid wanting them to do so.

People don't ask for a 100 different water choices.

They asked, including myself, if another choice was available as some do NOT LIKE the taste of Aquafina.....There is an after taste.....Just as there are different tastes in beer, wine and Champaign.

The Escape has a choice of 3 other brands and they charge a higher price, as they do at land based restaurants by the glass.

The choices are carried in the bars and restaurants.

We do not like the bottled water package (Aquafina) and do not like to drink the ships water as The drinking water likely won’t quench your thirst. The water in the shower will dry your hair and your skin.

Normally, this will not affect you, if you are on a ship for only 2 weeks tops. This I found out on a 31 day cruise...My skin and hair was affected...We carried our own drinking bottled water at that time, but that privilege has been taken away.

So if you have ever had any problems with dry skin, It is recommended you wash your face with bottled water, the same for your hair, if you are extra careful about your hair.

Cruise ships or any ship for that matter have been built with water treatment facilities or ocean-water desalination plant.

Desalination, the removal of salt and other impurities from sea-water so that such water can become safe for human consumption...but...it dry's out your skin and you are always thirsty.

Once I found out the 3 they offered for sale by the glass, I went to the store and purchased one bottle for $1.69....It was flat and had NO AFTER taste so we decided that brand was acceptable for the duration of the cruise compared to Aquafina which does.

This is a thread on OTHER water for sale than Aquafina or the ships water....The cruise line charges an exorbitant amount for Bottled Aquafina and bottled water is NOT offered in any of the drink packages....It's extra....unless you gamble, and then it is of course it's Aquafina but in smaller bottles.

There are threads in CC about everything important to people...This is simply one of them.

I would be nice if they had 5 or 6 brands of bottled water but they don't...and... we are NOT allowed to bring our own.....So we PAY a whole lot more for 'other brands' they "Offer" by the glass for a price... in their restaurants.

  5. Oh now.

Don't you realize how wonderful it would be for the ships to have a HUGE selection of bottled water from all over the world so the water connoisseurs

could sit around and compose some water pairing for their meals?

Shewt, the ship could set up a showroom to display the vast selection of varied bottled waters

And they could probably make four people on every cruise just ecstatic with this nonsense. It seems like a VERY cost-effective revenue generator for them.

I see that you didn't make a New Years resolution to not enter threads and make 'snide' remarks that doesn't concern you're cruise experience personally.

The same could be said about wine, champagne, beer.....They all are called the same so they MUST taste the same so why bother having a 'choice'.

Well they do have a different TASTE and water to "some" have a different taste.

    Happy New Year.

  6. I'm also not a fan of Aquafina - where did you order the Aqua Panna prior to boarding, if you don't mind me asking? I've never seen that available to pre-order. Just checked my upcoming Epic sailing, and it's not available there either. Would love to at least try to get something other than Aquafina! Thanks in advance! :)

I had a back and forth email going for a month with senior staff including Del Rio and Andy Stuart plus a few others.

    Nobody seemed to know anything!

One answer from one and a different one from another. Then a call from someone in Miami that said I could order it right then and there from him which I did....rdteam@ncl.com.

Throw all that out the window....The right hand (Land) doesn't know what the left hand (Ship) accepts/does.

Better to go to a thread on your ship and ask what water is sold in bars/ restaurants on your ship. It probably is, as they offered at dinner (for a price) when they ask if you desire, a glass of bottled water.

So once you know what OTHER water is sold, it's better to order it once on board and have it delivered to your cabin.

Just lined them up on the shelf and filled my empty 8 oz. bottles once 3 were empty and I cleaned them with a tiny bottle of liquid dish soap we took.

  7. Sorry about the delay. On the Escape, it was available at most bars and restaurants for about $6 for the large bottle. The easiest place to purchase would probably be Pinchos as they usually had the most down time.

We ordered the Aqua Panna prior to boarding so it would be in our cabin. It was not there.

I asked our cabin steward and he ordered it from somewhere and the 7 bottles arrived in our cabin from somewhere within 30 minutes.

    HATE....Aquafina!

Had to order 2 more as the bottle is 3 ----8 oz. bottles ....We took empty 8 oz. bottles with us in our luggage to carry.

Sometimes I forgot and had a bottle with me and it still got though the x-ray machine....Maybe because of the size?

Saw few people with the bottle water they offer....Aquafina.....Most people had their own Stainless bottle which they could fill at the BARS....The café has a sign that no bottled water could be filled at the beverage station.

Most bars had large containers of iced water on the counter where you could fill your water bottles or containers.

  8. Just back from Escape.

Last month purchased 2.....$500.00 certificates.....specifically for casino....They charged me 3 % to transfer the funds to the casino even though they (Miami) told me in an email that there would be NO charge.

Land based HQ of NCL personal doesn't know what the ship accepts/does.

Only way to avoid that, is to deposit $5k and opening an account with a voided blank check.

It's a process we didn't want to do..

If you leave it in as certificates to pay your bill, there will be no charge of 3 % but you will wait for them to mail a refund.

Take CASH.....or pay the 3%......You do it on a machine in the casino...day you were born and year you were born is info you put in.

Sorta crazy....Another thing if playing machines....CASH OUT first....Then take your card out..... or you have to go into the machine to get your ticket...Day of birth and year.

I don't know if the 3% will show up on my credit card.....Will look into my CC in a few days and report back.

  9. I can tell you from experience ....Do NOT ever rent a car in Playa del Carmen to drive to Cancun.

Besides the time....You will be met with machine gun military, (If military)... inspection of your auto and possible trees and large branches blocking the road so you have to stop your car....Robbery ensues.

I drove around and was lucky I had room to spare.

I know..... when we spent a week at Puerto Aventuras .

We were also warned to be back before dark..

    It's NOT worth your life.

  10. How does one go about finding these large blocks of suites held out of inventory? I've looked previously at the big online cruise agencies and they don't show as available. You would think if they are holding them they would want to sell them- advertise them. Just wondering if there's some secret to finding them?

They are large companies.....It can go from Costco to Last Minute Travels to Vacations to Go to Cruise direct and more. There are some that are really large for just cruising and people have delt with certain owners or agents all their lives of cruising.

They may not even tell you the truth.

Some have steady customers that tell their regular agent they are looking at that time and hold a cabin for them but the agency MUST return the cabin back to the line at a certain date.

That's why these last minute bids are starting....returned cabins.

  11. Most times cabins are held by large travel agency's. So they are being "Held" just in case.

They have to return them to the line at a certain time such as 90 days before sailing, some larger companies can hold for less such as at the 60 day mark and for sure at the 30 day mark.

From 90 days forward, whoever you're working with or the line itself, keep checking every day or be put on a list for first call.

We once had a great cabin and 2 days before sailing had a death in the family. Someone got that terrific cabin at the port the day of sailing because they ASKED.

    We did have insurance.

  12. I put all my information in my computer under my trip file in case I need it while gone.

I put a printed page of where I will be going in my luggage on the top of where I am going, ship and Itinerary....Tags ripped off and I use 3 tags on my bags.

I print one to come home and place it also IN my luggage....Tags can be ripped off.

I scan my passport and reduce the size to credit card size then laminate it so I can slip it into my lanyard for ID or if needed and leave my original in the safe in my cabin.

These huge ships are made from different materials with the lower decks made of steel and the upper decks made of aluminum.

I take my own hand sanitizer and also pick up a can of Lysol then spray down everything in the cabin starting with every door handle, closet door, fridge,

drape pole, toilet handle and the TV remote. You get the message.

I only use plastic glasses in the cabin unless I wash them personally.

  13. Caesar's doesn't actually own NCL. The company that owns Harrah's Entertainment (Caesar's) also has a stake in NCL. Apollo Global Managment invested in NCL in 2008 and has also invested in Regent and Oceania, lines NCL owns.

Thanks for making me curious thus pushing me to do some research!

In any event I'm looking forward to having some fun with the slots on the Dawn next week.

Star Cruises owns 40% of NCL at this time since they split off and sold the majority to Apollo which is a gambling consortium.

It's why they do the Orient more than others.

As to who gets what .........that's a toss up.

  14. Sorry about the delay. On the Escape, it was available at most bars and restaurants for about $6 for the large bottle. The easiest place to purchase would probably be Pinchos as they usually had the most down time.

Thank you very much. It's far better than the other water.

Cruising is getting like the airlines. Pretty soon they will make you pay for luggage.

They already started with ala Carte.

A bit at a time to see how much they can get away with, without people vacationing elsewhere.

  15. Hello!

I've seen a lot of mention of the cocktails on the ships, but am having a hard time finding what beers the ships stock. Does anyone have a menu or list?

I'll be on Getaway in January and need to know if I should be switching to liquor in preparation for a week with the beverage package!

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using Forums mobile app

Del Rio is going to make it so there is ONE beer allowed on their ships.

Then there will be ONE cocktail only allowed such as a martini.

    NOTHING ELSE!

Everything is taken away .......about "Choice".

NCL used to be ALL about choice......NOW....It's about Control.

  16. Pay the $50-60 for a case and be done with it then... it is a vacation you know....

    Keep up with the thread.

You have many choices to drink.... I have but one which I dislike with a passion and of course the ships hold.

I have decided how to solve my problem and see if it passes the test.

  17. Good grief. You have 140 posts and 90 percent them have to with the water policy or the CEO of NCL. Point is well taken.

Another who has NOTHING to help.

Water IS important to me. Apparently you have a different addiction.

  18. And I thought alcohol not water caused aggression

No, Only those who wish to continue a war and have nothing to add because they don't KNOW.

It's one of the reasons CC has fewer new people willing to even ask a question without being flamed with all your "knowledge'.

The know-it-alls are of particular concern as they make themselves 'captain' of the subject.

  19. It's not what you say, it's how you say it. There's absolutely no reason to be rude. Maybe your particular question didn't get answered yet, but people are sharing information related to the topic of water, and I'm sure others find the answers helpful.

It is not considered RUDE to ask a question yet be told by those who don't know that I should not be concerned and accept the fact.

We started out with the Great Norway and have been on many ships besides the NCL line. This paid for cruise will be the last and all because of WATER.

Water means something to me. Enough to rid myself from cruising the lines of CEOs like Del Rio who doesn't care for his passengers.

3 pages yet not one answer.

Now that our $30 million man is in charge and can drink anything he pleases, I would like to know what brand of water is offered for a PRICE at the restaurants.

NOT the horrible Aquafina and it's after taste.

It's a simple question when the waiter comes around and asks if you are interested in purchasing a glass of WATER. I would happily pay for the entire bottle as long as it wasn't Aquafina.

Your ship is filled with 100 different beers and dozens of brands of liquor.

Water drinkers who NEED water for their health, are left so far in the cold as I can find out...... with ONE brand.

I will go, as it's paid, I will be treated as a criminal when bringing a bottle of WATER on board, and I will quit NCL.

    It's the straw.

I still have some standards for water as others have for their liquor or wine.

  20. Yes. I have been on 6 NCL cruises this year. The most recent in September. Now that's about 7 weeks ago. Sorry if that is not current enough. And I am sorry if over a dozen NCL cruises over the past two years does not provide me with sufficient familiarity with this cruise line. I answered most of your comments and questions.

Never seen Aqua Panna,,,, but have never specifically looked for it.

I don't care how many cruises you claim to have been on.

I don't list my cruises and didn't have a need to ask for certain information, UNTIL Del Rio changed a policy on of all things .....WATER!

When in the dining room, you are offered ....for a price....several kinds of bottled water.

I ask for information about what brand of water..... is for sale.

If you don't know, then don't post.

I want knowledge from those who "KNOW" what kind of WATER is SOLD at the table.

  21. Can you substantiate your claim about FDR drinking whatever he wants? Please provide evidence.

We purchase San Pellegrino water on board.

The Casino bar sells the same water that is sold in every bar on the ship, Aquafina. The Casino does not offer any "free" water. If you have a casino drink card, you can order a bottle of Aquafina which will be comped by using your drinks card.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

    I rest my case.

I and others ASKED about the recent sailings.

NOT from those who sailed months ago and don't know the "current" policy or even IF the ship carry's Aqua Panna.
