  1. MagnoliaBlossom stated in an earlier post that you can redeem for cashback. I have looked at the Cap One, and still plan to get one, but for now I am trying to figure out how to get cash back for the NCL world points. If I can't, then I will use them for a cruise in the next year or two.

To my knowledge (and from a few experiences) World Points only convert to reduction in cruise price or OBC.

I do not use the BofA NCL card much anymore because Cap One gives you twice the benefit.

$50,000 worth of purchases gets you $500 reward with NCL BofA card.

$50,000 worth of purchases gets you $1000 reward with Cap One, $1000 real dollars, right off the balance of your payment.

PS: In the old days $50,000 worth of purchases got you $1500 in Compass coupons.... oh well.

  2. I do not see an option for cash back on the redemption chart. If I have 50,000 points, I can get $500 off a cruise, or $500 OBC. Does this mean I can get $500 cash back, or is the amount different? How do I go about doing this? I miss the old certificate program!

  3. I do not believe you can get any onboard credit for these. A few lucky people were able to swing this when the certs were first issued in Feb, but that was it. The certs will get you a one catagory upgrade for three people, or if there are two of you traveling, a two catagory upgrade for one of you and a one catagory upgrade (you would have to pay for the second catagory upgrade) for the second person. The upgrade must be inside to inside, or outside to outside, or balcony to balcony. I do not believe they can be used for suites. Hope this helps. They are not worth much.....

I have 3 certificates from the old Compass Reward Points. Its 100 points One Category Upgrade. I have 3 of them. Can I trade these in for onboard credit? What would 300 points get me? I have to book a cruise by 1/31/10 in order to use them but can cruise anytime until 1/31/2011.

Check out Capital One for Ultra Professionals. The NCL BOA MC is now not any better than any other cruise line card. :(

I am cruising in January and using the last of my reward points from the old system, $500 worth plus a $100 upgrades for my wife and I.

Has anybody used points earned on the new system? I am NOT happy with it and have considered dropping the card altogether.

I use my BOA card instead of carrying cash and run up close to $2K a month most of the time. I got this card and changed my spending habits for the sole purpose of the cruise rewards.

  5. It was unbelievable the first time the credit card companies jacked up our interest rates, doubled minimum payments and tacked on huge fees to try and beat a new February law that will end many of their abusive ways.

Now, they're at it again, and getting even more creative — but with your help, we can stop them cold!

Thanks to a huge outcry from American cardholders, the House just passed a bill to freeze interest rate hikes on your card balances, and give you new protections starting Dec. 1 — just in time for the holiday season. Now, we need the Senate to do the same!

E-mail your Senators right now to stop the rate increases — we can't afford to wait!

This continued attack on your wallet is no accident. A major credit card reform law goes into effect in February. The card companies begged Congress to delay its implementation so that they could "update their systems" to comply with the new law.

But instead, they've spent the time hitting you with new tricks — like a fee for paying off card balances each month. Or variable rate cards that only "vary" if interest rates increase, but don't give you the full break if interest rates drop in your favor.

If the companies can retool their computers to accommodate these tricks, there's no reason they can't abide by the new rules right now. After the recent bipartisan House vote, we have real momentum to stop these abuses. Now the Senate must hear that we can't afford the credit card company tactics, especially with the holidays approaching.

Tell your Senators to stop the rate increases and implement reforms NOW!

After you e-mail the Senate, please forward this to anyone you know who is fed up with these tactics. We have immense power when we band together — let's put the pressure on now!

    Sincerely,

  6. Paper statement: Norwegian Cruise Line

Please forgive me if this has already been asked/answered :o

I was looking at my statement on line and noticed that the logo at the top, which used to say NCL now says Orient Lines.

I Know NCL bought ships from Orient lines...or they merged or something, I just thought it odd that NCL would decide to go with their logo on the Master Card statement.

    Anyone else notice this??

  7. Winnie:

According to Fufuhase's post above you just have to call the redeption center and have them apply the points to your cruise but I have no idea how this works... I suppose they will take the cash value off your MC bill. I am also not sure if this must be done before or after the payment for the cruise is made, but I would think it is after, since you will recieve a prtial credit for the charge for the cruise. The important thing is to put the cruise costs on the NCL MC. I think this is the number to redeem World Points for the card: 1-800-434-8313.

It appears that you currently have enough for either $200 off the cruise for 20,000 World Points, or a $250 onboard credit for 25,000 World Points.

    http://www.ncl.com/nclweb/cruiser/cmsPages.html?pageId=WorldPoints

Most of us (including me) have not redeemed any points yet, since, the new program is less than a year old, and it takes three times as long to earn points now, so IF EVERYONE COULD REPORT BACK WITH THEIR EXPERIENCES REDEEMING WORLD POINTS FOR CURISE DISCOUNTS/ONBOARD CREDITS/FREE CRUISES IT WOULD BE HELPFUL TO ALL OF US!

My statement says I have 26,275.00 points. How can I redeem my points to apply to my Jan. cruise? And...how much does that work out to be?

I charge everything but pay it off each month so I'm not really credit card savy.

    Thanks

  8. No idea which BOA World Points cards will have the fee, and which won't. I just heard this on the news last night. Pretty soon there won't be any good cards left.... My son got a Discover card that only paid bonus points on gas and car repairs year-round, because he only uses his card for car expenses. They paid 5% cash back for all car-related expenses with no cap (Discover Miles). He just got a notice that they will reduce the cash-back on car-related expenses to 3%, I believe (might be 2%).

10/14/2009 - Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) said Tuesday that it will begin "testing" a new fee on less than 1% of its credit-card holders, according to an AP report. Some holders of its roughly 80.2 million cards in circulation will face annual fees ranging from $29 to $99 beginning next year. Customers selected for the new fees were picked based on "risk and profitability," meaning that customers in good standing and with no missed payments may be chosen. Bank of America spokesman Betty Riess said, "We're testing this to see what the feedback is. In terms of any plans going forward, we haven't made any decisions."

LET'S GIVE THEM SOME ADVANCE FEEDBACK!

Any word on when the annual fee will start? I'll have to make sure I spend enough money onboard to get to my next level in Nov. Then I will need to book next cruise to apply OB credit. :( January starts with 5% for cruises on Discover. Had planned to max that out and then pay balance on NCL. But not if it has an annual fee!

Never got any bonus points when new card was issued but it was my existing NCL card and they just changed my account number. Then there was the fraud issue and they changed the number again. This time I switched my electric bill payment to a different credit card. :D

  9. Perhaps these were bonus points for using the new card....

Dh put his NCL card away and didn't use it after the World Points came into play until last month. (We cashed in all his points for $500 compass rewards certificate and 2 upgrade certificates.)

He used his NCL card last month before our Star cruise to purchase tires for his car. Got the statement in the mail when we got home from our cruise and he had been awarded enough points to get $100 OBC on our Nov. Spirit cruise.

Points awarded were way more than the total purchase for the tires.:D

    Dianne

  10. Thanks! Yes, that does help. I seriously doubt we will ever have enough points for a free cruise, but hope to have enough for $500 off eventually.... :D

That's actually not true. You can book your cruise through whoever, you just need to redeem your points through the redemption center. I booked my cruise through my TA as always and then just called the NCL redemption center to redeem my points for the $s off the cruise.

I think the only time you have too book your cruise through them is if you have enough points for a whole "free" cruise (not just for OBC/$s off).

    Hope that helps.

  11. Okay, I just got the terms for the World Points program that replaced the Compass Rewards program. According to those terms, if you want to use the points, the cruise must be booked through thier World Points redemption center. Anyone know anything about this? I thought I could use the little points we have earned, and book through NCL or a travel agent. :(( I also heard on the news this evening that BOA plans to start charging its World Point customers a $29/year annual fee. I really didn't want to cancel this card, and just planned to use it less, but this is getting ridiculous!

  12. This month's Consumer Reports Magazine (November 2009), which is on news stands now, has an article which rates credit cards (depending on your needs), and has a small list of recommended cards. It appears that they have come up with the same cards listed here on this thread. :D

  13. Has anyone here ever tried to bring the upgrade certs to the pier and see if you could get a better than one catagory upgrade for them, based on final availablity? We have used up our valuable certs for an upcoming cruise, and have two (one good for each person) one catagory ugrade certificates left, which we regard as useless. :D I just wondered if anyone had tried to get a valuable (from outside to balcony, etc.) upgrade with these at the pier. I know that is how they were intended to be used, but just wondered if anyone had tried this, and what the result was.

  14. [Of course, if you were thinking about booking a last minute cruise using the certificate, you should be aware that there are some pretty good deals if you book a few weeks before sailing. Maybe you want to think about that. :D

QUOTE=breezer;21380199]Thanks, c breeze for the quick response. I was pretty sure that was the answer. What a shame it will be wasted.

  15. Unfortunately, the Compass Reward Certificates can only be used by the person who's name is on the certificate, and they must be one of the people in the cabin. Can't you convince your cousin to take a last minute cruise with your someplace? :D Hate to se those certificates go to waste.... http://www.ncl.com/nclweb/cruiser/cmsPages.html?pageId=CompassRewardsFAQ

My cousin has a $500 certificate that she will not be able to use. It expires 10/11/09. She will give it to me if I can use it, but I don't think the certificates are transferable. I would book something next week if it were. Anybody, have any experience transferring certificates, or could she book it for me...like a gift maybe?
  16. I will be honest here. I really never kept track of the Discover points/cash back, since the other cards were better and I didn't use the Discover as much, so I don't know if this was a change in policy or if they have several different types of cards out there. I just hope Capital One doesn't change their program, or I may just accumulate Costo Amex reward and forget the rest of this......

OK C Breeze. Help me out here.

Did Discover recently change their program to limit the quarterly 5% cash back bonuses to $400? If so I'm going to cancel the cards I just got!

I only got the Discover after reading multiple credit card comparison sites touting that it was one of the best "unlimited" 5% cash back cards out there. How did all those sites omit the fact that there is a cap of 400 on those categories per quarter? That totally neuters the card.

I only got the discover to compliment my AMEX Costco card. I figured that when the quarter with 5% for gas beats my AMEX Costco card, I'll switch to the Discover. Same for the Discover Grocery quarter etc. and all else will go on my 4% gas, 3% rest and 1% thereafter AMEX Costco. That's the reason I stated that the Discover is useless if the cap is true! I'll be better off throwing everything on the Costco card. What a joke to Discover (no pun intended).

I hear that Capital One customer service and rewards has the one of the worst reps out there but the Ultra at 2 points per dollar and 39 annual fee does start to look like the better winner at this point!

If I'm wrong about the Discover rewards, can someone confirm?

  17. After a nice phone call, I guess multiple BOA accounts in my "geographical" area were compromised. My account was closed and a new number issued...so if anyone else has this problem (I'm in the northeast), you might want to call!

Wonderful......... :( When were they going to tell the cardholders that were affected about this???

  18. The grocery store where we shop does not take AMEX. :(

This is why I use my AMEX Blue Cash card. After you spend $6500 in a year, the bonuses increase to 5% for groceries and gas and 1.25% for everything else. There's no cap. I just put a lot of business expenses on the card as soon as I start a new year to get past the $6500.
  19. Wow, you got me all excited about my next free cruise. :D $20 will get you dinner at a specialty restaurant. Back to Capital One Ultra....

I take it all back! I read the fine print more closely (thanks to my DS) and there's a cap of $400 in PURCHASES, not $400 in the bonus for the grocery promo. So the max cashback bonus is 5% of $400, or $20. That's not going to go too far LOL. Oh well, it was a nice thought.
  20. I am not sure about the answer to your question, but it is a good one! It would seem that if you buy gift cards of any type at a grocery store during the bonus period, you would earn the 5%. Now that's using you thinking cap!!:D Maybe this is another way to save for cruises buy working this bonus thing. Is the max per quarter or per year??

Sorry if this has been asked already (this thread's too big to look for my question). You know how we were all charging like crazy last year to max out our old NCL card bonus? Like buying gift cards to supermarkets in December and planning on using them well into 2009?

My question is about the Discover card quarterly promos and the 5% cashback bonus in Oct - Dec on grocery stores, restaurants, and movies. Does anyone know if the strategy above applies to this? i.e. purchase a ton of grocery store gift cards during the promo period, get the cashback bonus ($400 max bonus on $8000, right?) and then use those cards to buy groceries as long as they last in 2010. Or even buy restaurant or movie gift cards to give as holiday gifts. Do gift cards count toward the bonus? I'll have to call Discover to see what they say, but I'm curious if anyone has ever done this, since I know those Discover promos have been around for a while.

Hope I've expressed this clearly. Thanks everyone.
