Dining in Cabin - How does ordering work?

We are considering enjoying dinner in our cabin on a couple of evenings as an alternative due to late on boarding on some port days with early seating selected and I would like to know how this is done.

Do we let the cabin staff know we'd like to see the menu? How far in advance do we need to order dinner, can this be done early in the day? Is the time established when ordered or does it take a while for the dinner to get there?

Thanks for the insight.:)

We did in room dining once. On the Millenium they had room service and during dinner hours you could order off the main dining room menu. We asked our cabin attendant for the main dining room menu. He brought it immediately and recommended ordering within the first hour of the dining room seating because I think the way it works is he goes and gets the food you want directly from the kitchen - since they are already creating the food for hundreds of the dining room patrons, it's easy for him to get plates of whatever you want from the MDR.

We also wanted selections off the room service menu. Getting stuff of room service menu was a different department. We just called guest relations and ordered and it came pretty quick - our cabin attendant tried to time it so both the room service food and the main dining room food came at the same time.

A little complicated but no big deal.
