LorieKeith Posted September 2, 2009 #1 Share Posted September 2, 2009 In mid September we will be in Victoria from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. docking at Ogden Dock with the Golden Princess. We would like to walk to downtown. As we will have limited sunlight hours, we are interested in which way is most scenic for walking. We want to get to the Empress Hotel and Beacon Hill Park. Should be walk the south side along Dallas Road and maybe through James Bay area or the North side, more along Belleville St? Appreciate any advice on best streets to walk along. Take Belleville St. See this map of cruise landmarks which has the route highlighted. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=100934763039761071004.0004665d7f3e28f06866d&ll=48.419461,-123.378525&spn=0.017402,0.045447&z=
LeftcoastBC Posted September 2, 2009 #3 Share Posted September 2, 2009 It's an easy walk but your daylight will be very limited. Sunset on the 15th of September is 7:26 PM .. Area is however residential with appartments and hotels along the way. Nothing spectacular. Once into the inner harbour area regardless of time it will be worth it. I'd take the shuttle from the pier and get your walk in around the harbour area/ Empress etc.
Langley Cruisers Posted September 2, 2009 #4 Share Posted September 2, 2009 Gosh, that's not much time, is it. You dock at 7:00, right? So once the ship is cleared you may not be able to leave until 7:30 or so. I would take a cab or shuttle to the downtown area. It's not that far, certainly walkable, but in the dark it could prove a little frustrating. Umm, also I, personally, wouldn't walk in Beacon Hill Park after dark. I lived in Victoria for 35 years and there are some sketchy areas in the Park, for sure. It's beautiful, yes, but it's not safe. You should consider it a park like any other park after nightfall, and use your discretion and best judgement.
LorieKeith Posted September 2, 2009 Author #5 Share Posted September 2, 2009 Hadn't thought about the whole park after dark angle - probably will choose to stay clear if it is dark. Would you say the same for Thunderbird park? Besides walking around to see the Parliament Building, the Empress Hotel, and China town, do you have any recommendations? We are not big shoppers or pub crawlers . . .
Poconolady Posted September 2, 2009 #6 Share Posted September 2, 2009 We have done the walk up through the residential area a couple of times on those evening in Victoria stops (I know the reason for them, but they are SO short!). Anyway, we walk at a moderate pace and it usually takes about 20 minutes to get from the port to the Inner Harbor area. You will have plenty of company walking to town, coming back you may be by yourselves. The walk is fine, area is nice, streets are well lit. If its a nice night you should be fine. If it is raining, find a transportation option.

We are not big shoppers or pub crawlers . . . I wouln't worry about the Thunderbird Park area. If it is a nice evening you may care take a horsedrawn carriage ride. There are shuttles that run from Ogden Point to across the street from the Empress, you cost is $6 or7 pp rtn. www.victoriacarriage.com/ http://www.tallyhotours.com
