Carnival Triumph worker faces child porn charge

They were given times to check in, which worked for us, met us for lunch and dinner, high tea and other events, but it all worked out.

Glad it worked out. Molesters really are not the most common problem in these situations... a more likely problem are the kids (not yours, of course;)) but there are some of them... who have a taste of freedom they have never before experienced... and they meet up with other interesting kids... and before you know it they are toking a joint on the sun deck or spitting on the head of someone in the atrium. Not really the experience you want them to have.

Yes, you think your kids are fine but do you really know for certain what they do when you are not watcing? I didn't think so.

I have read way too many stories here about kids gone wild that there's no way I am taking one on a cruise with me until they are older and more mature!

Even news like this won't keep some parents from letting their young ones run free on board. :(

Of course whenever I post that ships are cities of 3000 strangers some good some bad, I get answers like 3000 is a town not a city!!! Or some other comment meant to say that I am overprotective of my children.

Unfortunately, I am right....it is a city of 3000 strangers, some good some bad.

Parents keep your guard up!!!

Can we all bookmark this thread so that when the next thread spouts up regarding letting kids run loose at all hours of the day or night totally unsupervised "because it is their vacation too afterall" we can just refer to this thread?

It is good to read the responses here as I thought that I was the only one with some sense regarding kids safety while on cruise ships! Glad I am not alone!!!

My daughter went on a cruise with me a couple years ago. She was 14 & she did not go anywhere I did not know. She participated in camp carnival & because she has mild disabilities, she was with the younger age group. The only time she was out of my site on the ship was at camp carnival & when she would go get a drink from the bar but at that time, I could actually see her. She just didn't know it.

I agree - even tho your kids are hanging out with others - who really knows what they are doing? Recently cruised with family - dd was 16 at the time - I did encourage her to go to the teen group meeting 1st night - even tho she was not that interested - but I knew from reading the boards that she would probably make friends and hook up with other teens...then I got to thinking - well I don't really 'know' who these other teens are and what they are into.

She went and met 3 girls - who invited her up to the hot tub at 10 pm - but she did not want to go - and in fact I was almost relieved. she hung out with us or her brothers most of the time (we had walkies talkies with us)...and I knew she was not getting into trouble or being influenced by who knows what!

I don't think this was a random search.

I was on this exact cruise very recently and at the foot of one of the stairwells near the dining room, I saw something that I thought very odd.

I saw a male ship employee speaking to a girl who looked like she was about 15. I thought it odd since I never saw ship employees engaging in conversation with passengers- especially for so long. The conversation was benign- just lengthy. It was him asking where she was from, asking her about school, what her homework was like, just nonsense details about her schoolwork. She seemed completely trusting but something just seemed odd about it-- my first instinct was "is this guy trying to hit on this girl?"

I thought it odd that he would do so in full view of a number of people waiting outside the dining room, as well as a few employees walking by. Perhaps I wasn't the only one who thought it odd. I don't know if it was him who was arrested, but I can imagine a scenario where a fellow ship employee reported him as this may be a repeated occurrence, and then they searched his things and found the evidence.

Or maybe it was just a friendly employee and I am being overly suspicious.

I know employees are often curious and ask many questions about our lives. And I know for a fact they are not trying to hit on old grandmom me. I've had lengthy conversations and believe me it was not initiated by me. (I always worry that I am imposing). The questions seem to be very genuine.

People like this make me sick but I must have missed where he was accused of molestation

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, chances are it is a duck. It does not have to say that he was accused of molestation for us to believe that anyone that had child porn on their computers; has in all likelihood molested a child.

Does it really matter that we have come to this conclusion? Their are a lot of parents that let their children run all over a ship w/o any supervision. If this is not a reason for them to take better care of their children, I do not know what will.

How scary! This was the last ship we were on. And yes, of course my kids were there.

Right before I went on this cruise, I got into a disagreement with some posters here who thought it was perfectly fine for their kids (as young as 6) to roam around the ship unattended. They said I was "smothering" my children because they are always supervised.

Well this is why I smother them. We were on the ship with a sicko and who knows if he would have had access to my kids if they were "wandering the ship" alone. :(

Our kids are either with us, or in Camp Carnival. Our 10 year old is NOT allowed to sign out, which means sometimes he can't participate in things like the scavenger hunt where there are no counselors with the kids. I feel no remorse about this. He's TEN!! I wouldn't let him wander around the mall and I'm NOT allowing him to wander around the ship without us or other adult supervision.

I go so far as to write a message on that part of the registration from. Just above the area that we check "no" he can't sign out, I also write in UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!! If he's EVER told to just go anyway, Carnival will be in SERIOUS hot water. (I've seen some parents say that's happened to their kids!!!!!)

Our oldest is 15, and he is allowed to go to the sports deck, lido, arcade and Club O2. However, he also has walkie talkies, we visually check on him at least two times a day to make sure he's where he says he's going to be and he has a very strict set of rules that he's always abided by. He must eat breakfast and dinner with us and he must return to the cabin for the night at 10pm. He's never minded or given us a hard time about it.

We just got back from the Glory yesterday and one night as my DH and I were coming in we saw a little boy around 8 or so as the last one on the elevator when we got off of it. We almost asked him if he needed someone to walk him to his room, but we know some parents would be offended, so we didn't. I've wondered about that kid since then. It was after 10 at night!!! If I EVER see that again, I'll just follow the child to make sure they make it OK. The parents will just have to be pissed. I'm not going to worry over a kid again when I could have just made sure he was OK.

Obviously, I still feel bad about leaving that small kid in that elevator alone....where the hell were his parents?!?

I don't think you can compare that to a staff member chatting up a 15 yr. old.

My daughters are grown now but if we had taken them on cruises when they we young we would not have let them roam around the ship. We never let them roam around stores alone. I feel like if you do that you are taking a big chance. I watch the news every night and it seems like every day another child is taken. It is just not worth the risk. As far as I know it hasn't happened on a ship yet but it is probably just a matter of time. It just breaks my heart when another child is taken. Children just can't have the freedom that they used to be able to have. It is too risky.

Ever think about turning this "employee" in at the Pursers Desk?

I agree with deborahjo. We cruise with 3 teen age girls and knew where they were at all times. And if my husband or I would go to check on them, they were always where they said they would be. They were always polite to other passengers. Of course on sea days they would sleep as late as we would let them. Which we would evently go and wake them up. Now they are all adults and married have kids of there own and still talk about how much fun they had on that cruise. Still great girls.

People have to understand what ever that can happen on land can happen at sea, look at how many people are caught with child porn on their computers on land runs from the local perv to the teacher...to the cop...to everyday people...and those are people we should have a trust in. So when people let the "ship" babysit their kids I am amazed...perv's paridise.........I mean those who say "we have check in times.....or they know to meet us at this spot at this time etc"....my son was never let free from us if he did not have a family member with him [cousins his age [15/16/17...when he was younger sorry be upset son but but no you can not go get ice cream because I want to gamble"......wake up people our kids are our jewels...meaning you will not leave your jewels out in your cabin....so do not let your kids roam the ship!!!!

Turn them in for what? Talking to a passenger?

I have to agree - there is no harm in a ship staffer or anyone else engaging another person on any age in normal conversation. What if the girl had a question and the person was trying to answer it?

What should he do - say something like "you are too young and I think it is inappropriate for me to speak to you?" I sure hope the lawyers don't get the people so paranoid they act like that.

People who actually do inappropriate things should be dealt with... but at least wait until they do something wrong. Innocent until proven guilty.

A lot of the crew probably have children back home and the girl could of reminded him of his daughter. I'm sure I read somewhere that the majority of child molester's victims are family members or friends of the family. Strangers are the least of your worries.

If you have a young child anyone that you don't know well is someone to worry about. Attacks by strangers happen more often than you might think.

Now everyone needs to be on top of there game in dealing with people, but this takes the cake. Some people get so paranoid that they see bad things where there are none.

Really now a adult talking to a child in a public place is not a crime.

I totally agree on the Liberty in May I've never seen so many "hot in the pants" little girls running around with their little friends knocking drinks out of you hands and literally" running free". As soon as something happens to one of them the parents want to put it on the 5'oclock news. They should put some blame on the parent when you don't keep an eye on your kids.

And let's tell our police "MEN" not to talk to children if they need help...

I think the old saying fits anymore with many people......

"Just because you're paranoid, doesn't man they're not out to get you"....LOL.....

As to the subject of the thread (And thanks for my lead in Dingo) there are perverts everywhere...It is not the same time period when I grew up. I know there were some out there probably but they were scared to death that if they were caught by a kids father they would loose their life and the cops would pat him on the back for doing it....

Parents these days should care about watching their kids a little more. Ships like malls have all kinds of people from guests to employees.....But then again many people drop their kids off at the malls as a babysitting service.....;)
